HEREFORD bulls sold to 8200gns twice and produced a record average of £4321.15 for 26 sold at the Hereford Cattle Society’s spring sale at Hereford, this week, where bulls met a clearance rate of 72% with while heifers sold to a 94% clearance.
One of the bulls to hit 8200gns was Romany 1 Poseidon from father and son team, Ron and Robert Wilson, Cowbog, Kelso. The 19-month-old is the first son of the Barwise 1 Wellington-bred bull, Barwise 1 Lancer to be sold, while his dam, Romany 1 Lily is by the previous UK Sire of the Year, Castro. 
Boasting impressive figures in the top 5% of the breed for both eye muscle area and intramuscular fat levels, he sold to D Maundell, Seascale, Cumbria. 
The Wilsons also sold the reserve junior and reserve overall male champion, Romany 1 Prince BL P41, for 6600gns to G Hall for his Pinmore herd at Lancashire. Another son of Barwise 1 Lancer, Prince is out of the Romany 1 Heavyduty-sired, Romany 1 Mink. 
Matching that top price of 8200gns was Tim and William Livesey’s Normanton 1 Perky from their herd at Manor Farm, The Hollow, Normanton le Heath.

Snapped up by former society chairman, RP Mann for his Spinney herd at Ufton, Warwickshire, this 20-month-old bull is an AI son of the Allendale Waterhouse-sired Days Calibre, and an ET bred from one of the top cows in the herd, Normanton 1 Fistulina 3, by Normanton 1 Eastern Promise. Full of breeding, Perky’s full brother was exported to France last year. 
Next best at 7000gns for M Ludgate, Scotsgrove Farm, Thame, Oxfordshire, was the Hereford Cattle Society’s reserve Bull of the Year for 2017, Rempstone 1 Even Money.

This 27-month-old stood supreme champion at a number of shows last year and is an AI son of the Doonbiddie Hustler-sired Aldersley 1 Edgar. An ET bred from the Dorepoll 1-sired, Kinglee 1 Fashion, his full sister stood female champion at the Autumn show and sale and sold for 5200gns. Buyer here was M Shaw, Kirkby Moorside, York.
Just behind at 6500gns was the junior and male champion, Solpoll 1 Pogba from J and W McMordie, Ballygowan, Northern Ireland. Reserve senior male champion at the Northern Ireland Calf Show, this October, 2016-born bull is by the Romany 1 Distiller-sired Panmure 1 Henry, which also bred the record price bull sold in Hereford for 10,800gns. 
Out of Christies 1 Amber Keno, Pogba has excellent performance figures being in the top 1% for all weights and sold to the Stratfield Saye herd from Reading, Berkshire. 
The same home then sold another son of Panmure 1 Henry for 5600gns to HA Hatt’s Weybrook herd at Sherborne St John, Basingstoke. This was Solpoll 1 Pirate, a 19-month-old bull out of the Fisher 1 Charlie-sired, Solpoll 1 Stella, which is a full sister to Hero, the top priced bull at the society’s sale in 2012 and whose grand-dam, Stella C16, sold for the UK Hereford female record price of 12,000gns. 
Selling for 5400gns was Speirs Farms’ Pepperstock 1 Norman, a 27-month-old son of the Velleyhill 1 Ho Boy-sired, Bosa 1 Howzat, out of Boundless 1 Jade. Used at home last summer, he heads to work at the Maxstoke herd for DP Jones, Coleshill, Warwickshire.
Females reached 3500gns for WJ Hutchings and Sons’ Fisher 1 Clover from South Mundham, Chichester when sold to Twose Farms, Whitland, Carmarthenshire. Reserve female champion in the pre-sale show, this 13-month-old is by Fisher 1 Jaguar, out of a previous Fisher 1 Clover.

The female champion, Moorside 1 Poppy from G and MC Shepherd, Woodplumpton, Preston, made 3000gns when snapped up by new breeder, M Jordan of Chathill, Northumberland. This 13-month-old is a daughter of Moorside 1 Montgomery, out of Moorside 1 Jackie.
