Averages: Heifers, €4614; bulls, €2800. Overall, 17 lots, €4276

Herd owner, Tom Staunton, was left speechless by the on-line bidding frenzy for yearling heifers and bulls from his Caramba Beef Shorthorn herd from Kilcolgan, Co Galway, which saw a top price of €8400 and a further four selling for more than €6000, with several selling to Scotland.

"When I first went down the route of on-line marketing, I never could have visualised how quickly breeders would embrace the concept," said Tom.

"Perhaps what has been the most enjoyable has been how the previous sale cattle have performed for buyers."

Star of the show at €8400 was Caramba Rothes Lovable, which received no fewer than 54 bids of €100 from a starting point of €3000, with five bidders placing click after click in pursuit of her.

This 15-month-old which is a full sister to the award winning Caramba Rothes Hottie, a heifer that boasts numerous All Ireland championships under her belt, was knocked down to English breeders, David and Tom Bradley Farmer, buying for their Meonside herd now based at Wester Parkgate, Dumfries.

Lovable is by the Alta Cedar Perfect Storm son, Carrarock Chalkie and bred from the Uppermill Jinks-sired Caramba Rothes Molly 2. Her full sister, Kissable, sold to Cathryn Williamson, last year for €5100.

The Bradley Farmers took five across the Irish Sea and also went to €6500 for Caramba Rothes Lola, a similarly aged heifer from one of the original foundation females purchased from Uppermill in Uppermill Rothes Majestic. Her sire is the Uppermill Champ son, Bushypark Ultra.

And, at €2900, they bought the lead priced bull, Caramba Kinvara, an 18-month-old and 2017 All Ireland winning senior calf champion. The first progeny of Caramba Rothes Helen which was overall champion at the Highland Show the previous year, Kinvara is again by Ultra.

The sale of 14 heifers and four young bulls conducted via Mr Staunton's on-lines sales platform www.pedigreesales.co.uk saw all bids viewed live, and witnessed a second top of €7600 paid by Graham Hunt, who owns the Sowerby herd based at Thirsk. His purchase, Caramba Secret Love, is a similarly aged red heifer that attracted 52 €100 bids from a kick off point of €2400. She is again by Bushypark Ultra but bred from Uppermill Secret Passion, a Trunley Zorba daughter.

Caramba Ladybella was purchased by the youngest bidder in the sale, James Shaw, adding to his Glebefarm herd, from Moy, Dungannon, Northern Ireland. He parted with €7300 for this Ultra-sired heifer bred from one of the best cow families tracing back to Shadybrook Perfection 35S.

Chasing her at €7100 was one of the earliest lots, Caramba Debbie Louise, another Ultra daughter, bred from the Alta Cedar Perfect Storm-sired cow, Bennekerry Debbie. She travelled home with Libby Clarke buying for her Maralin herd, Co Armagh.

Scottish breeder, Cathryn Williamson, was another to make her mark, forking out €2800 for her new developing herd based at Balnepick, Kincraig, Kingussie. This was Caramba Leprechaun, a 15-month-old son of Heir Apparent of Longfield, out of Uppermill Rothes Maggie.
