PEDIGREE and commercial buyers were out in force at the annual Newark Limousin day sale, where averages recorded an increase on the year as 161 cattle sold to a 98% clearance.

It was a female and calf that headed up the trade at 6000gns when Richard Bartle and Mary Cormack's Absolute Justesse from Upper Dinmore, Hereford, sold to HD and PJ Cranfield, for their Copylawn herd at Edenham, Lincolnshire. The four-year-old Diamant daughter is out of the noted show cow, Newstart Upsydaisy, which stood inter-breed champion at the Royal Show in 2007. She changed hands with her seven-month-old heifer calf at foot by Dinmore Lionheart.

The Absolute team received a further 4800gns from Adrian Clark and Sons, of the Gallowscourt herd, Great Dunmow, for Absolute Jadore, with this four-year-old bred from Rivermead Rosebud, the dam of the aforementioned Upsydaisy. She is also by Diamant and sold with her bull calf by Dinmore Lionheart.

It was a good day for Ashley and Emma McInnes, of East Cowick, Goole, when they sold the second top female at 5800gns and the dearest bull at the same price, as well as further leading bull entries. Selling to J and T Waring, of the Everpark herd, near York, for 5800gns was the late 2014-born McInnes Jean, a Corridan Hakka daughter out of the Igolo-sired Greenwell Lenette. The buyer, in fact, gets three lives as she sold with her Loosebeare Iain-sired bull calf at foot and back in calf to Procters Logan.

The Scottish Farmer:

          McInnes Machine, 5800gns

Topping the bull entry at 5800gns was McInnes Machine, an October, 2016-born entry that sold to CE Hardcastle, Grantham, Lincolnshire. His pedigree includes the 27,000gns Loosebeare Iain on to the Corridan Hakka-sired McInnes Jasmine.

The McInness ladies sold the second top price bull at 5200gns in the shape of McInnes Michelin, another Loosbeare Iain son born around the same time as his byre mate but this time out of McInnes Grace, a Netherhall Chancer daughter. Forking out the cash was JD Leavesley, Needwood, Burton on Trent.

Also from the McInnes' was one of four bulls to hit to 5000gns mark. Their Mcinnes Mrbond, again by Loosebeare Iain, is out of the Vagabond-sired Greenwell Daisy, and sold to CDC Farm and Machinery, Holbeach St Johns, Lincolnshire.

The Scottish Farmer:

         Croxtonheath Mufasa, 5000gns

First of four to go under the hammer at 5000gns was Croxtonheath Mufasa from MD Copley, Grantham, Lincolnshire. This ET-bred son of Wilodge Cerberus is bred from the Vagabond-sired Mereside Celine, and found a new home at North Cliff, York, with J Gowthorpe.

The Scottish Farmer:

         Foxhillfarm Masterbull, 5000gns

The male and supreme champion from Mike and Melanie Alford also realised 5000gns when Foxhillfarm Masterbull sold to TA Vickers and Son, Tow Law, County Durham. He is by the 125,000gns Trueman Jagger and bred from the Wilodge Vantastic-sired brood cow, Bankdale Elizabeth, from the herd at Cullompton, Devon.

The Scottish Farmer:

          Coachhouse Munster, 5000gns

PT Makin, Great Ayton, Middlesborough, paid 5000gns for Coachhouse Munster, a Coachhouse Eebygum son from Messrs Heald, Retford, Nottinghamshire. He is out of Coachhouse Ureveller, a Haltcliffe Picasso daughter.

Making 4800gns when sold to Luke Colbourne, Newdigate, Dorking, was Calogale Mourinho from Messrs Lee and Lloyd, Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire. He is by the Objat-sired Calogale Irresistable, a bull breeding well for the Logierait Commercials team, while the dam is the Vantastic-sired Dinmore Helebore.

Another female sold for 4800gns when Messrs Brown snapped up Dinmore Jouvence for their Hollyberry herd at Foggathorpe, Selby. Sired by Dinmore and out of the Vantastic daughter, Dinmore Elegance, she also sold with a bull calf by Dinmore Lionhear.

Averages: 41 bulls, £3949.62 (+£163.01 on the year); 48 cows and calves, £2776.91 (-£34.66); 57 maiden heifers, £2011.23 (+£293.94); five in-calf heifers, £2898 (+£955.50); 10 in-calf cows, £2152.50 (+£451.50).
