IT was rather apt that females led the trade of Simmental cattle at a society sale at Carlisle, which included a Leading Ladies entry and saw two from north of the Border top the sale at 6200gns and 6000gns.

Outwith this section, averages were back on the year and for fewer sold, with only the best of the bulls finding new homes as buyers were particularly selective about what they invested in.

It was the youngest from the Leading Ladies offering that hit 6200gns when Jim and Patricia Goldie's Newbiemains Izzie sold to Richard McCulloch, Overhill House, East Lothian. Paraded by Jim's son Niall, 10-month-old Izzie is among the first crop by the privately purchased Woodhall Fantastic, of which sons will be on offer in October. She is bred from a long line of successful show cows being out of the Blackford Albatross-sired Newbiemains Dizzie, rated VG87 under the society's new female classification.

The Scottish Farmer:

        Overhill House Indi, 6000gns

In a swap around of roles, Jim and Patricia paid 6000gns for Richard's Overhill House Indi, a slightly older heifer at 14 months, and the first female offered from the Armadale-based herd by the Irish import, Curaheen Drifter – a bull whose first sons averaged £11,500. Brought out by stockmen, Alan and Cammy Jackson, Indi's dam, Overhill House Flame, is by Overhill House Volvo. She now joins the Newbiemains herd near Annan.

The Scottish Farmer:

          Midhope Holy Light, 5000gns

Next best at 5000gns was another from the Leading Ladies in the shape of the female champion, Midhope Holy Light, from father and son team, John and Craig Hollingsworth, Midhopestones, Sheffield. This January, 2016-born daughter of Delfur Chas, a 10,500gns purchase at Stirling, ran with Woodhall Everhart prior to the sale and is bred from the family's Light line, being out of Corskie Wealth-sired Midhope Evening Light. Forking out the cash was Brian Grant, of Druid Temple, Inverness.

The Scottish Farmer:

         Corskie Hadden, 3800gns

Bulls reached 3800gns on two occasions with the male champion from the Green family – represented on the day by Iain and daughter, Laura, as well as her fiance, Robert Beattie – the first to go under the hammer for the Garmouth, Fochabers-based herd. Their 19-month-old Corskie Hadden is by the 45,000gns Bel Dhu Capercaillie, whose first 20 sons sold in 2016 and 2017 averaged £7540, while his dam is Corskie Edna, a Ballinlare Farm Nightrider daughter. Hadden heads to work at Lucenre Farm, Rudgate, Tadcaster, for RC Robinson.

The Scottish Farmer:

          Chestermann Horatio, 3800gns

Matching that when knocked down to Palmallet Farm, Whithorn, Newton Stewart, was Chestermann Horatio, an Overhill House Data son from Nick and Nadia Gwynne, Whithorn. His dam is the Blackford Ringleader daughter, Chestermann Ringleader Natalie 2, whose full brother made 6500gns last back-end.

The Gwynnes sold the reserve male champion, Chestermann Harold, another of similar breeding, to A Lindsay and Co, Culnaightrie, Castle Douglas, for 3400gns. Another by Overhill House Data, he is bred from another Blackford Ringleader daughter in the form of Chestermann Ringleader Mali 4.

Averages: 10 bulls, £3118.50 (-£389.45 for 12 fewer); eight Leading Ladies maiden heifers, £3130.31 (+£514.06 for two more); seven unhaltered females, £1751.79 (-£142.59 for five fewer).
