A far from vintage show of Aberdeen Angus bulls saw just 25 sell to average £6699 – up £1301 on the year for 12 fewer, but with only 54% of the numbers forward finding new homes.

The pre-sale reserve overall champion, Duncanziemere Scorpion, attracted the lead price of 13,000gns, for Alister Clark and sons, Alister and Brian, Avisyard, Cumnock. This 18-month-old is a son of the 13,000gns Carlisle purchase, Auchincrieve Exodus, which has sired bulls to 30,000gns, while the Duncanziemere Schelda is a daughter of Rawburn Jester Eric. He sold down to Dorset with Paul Brewster, Donhead Hall, Shaftesbury.

Another by the same sire, Duncanziemere Jukebox, realised 10,000gns when the hammer fell to Anne and Alistair Foubister Netherton, Holm, Orkney. Similarly aged, he is out of Duncanziemere Jody, which is a maternal sister to the 30,000gns Duncanziemere Jacobite, and stood second in the show.

Dumfriesshire breeders, Stuart and Angie Burgess, Maryfield, New Abbey, gave 6500gns for Duncanziemere Edwina. A red ticket holder this is another by the same sire, being bred from Duncanziemere Edwina, which goes back to Rawburn Jester.

This February 2022-born twin is a son of Rawburn Lang Syne, which was bought privately and has bred three five-figure priced bulls sold privately. The dam, Idvies Privola is a daughter of Idvies Pink Peugeot, and a former show cow. Jim Wilson, Balhelvie, Newburgh, Fife, was the final bidder here.

Gordon and David Gray, Ettrick, Selkirk, achieved a personal best of 12,000gns when they sold their 18-month-old, Ettrick Gallileo in a two-way split to the Campbells, Thrunton, Alnwick and Tom Arnott, Haymount, Kelso. A son of Rawburn Boss Hogg, he is a heifer’s calf out of Ettrick Gaenor, which goes back to the 17,000gns Linton Gilbertines President.

The senior champion, Rulesmains Paycheck, achieved 9000gns for Andrew and Emma Hodge, Rulesmains, Duns. Reserve male champion at the Great Yorkshire Show and Angus champion at Berwickshire, this 19-month-old is one of the first to be sold from the private purchase, Blelack Prunce Camelot, and bred from Rulesmains Princess, which is a daughter of Duncanziemere Judge. He sold down to North Yorkshire with Thomas Stephen Knox, Millclose, Patrick.

At 8000gns, Old Barr Pitter Patter from Caolan McBrien, Enniskillen, Fermanagh, sold to Alexander Lyle, Scart Farm, Bridge of Weir. This March 2022-born bull is backed by Idvies breeding being a son of Idvies Eric, out of Idvies Pinky Promise, which goes back to Inkstack Ely.

Gill and Ewen MacGregor, Fortrose, Black Isle, also achieved a personal best when they sold their March 2022-born bull, Raddery Edin for 8000gns. The sire, Deveron Exstatic, was intermediate champion at Stirling in February 2019, with the dam, Raddery Elderflower being a daughter of McCornick KingKong. He sold to James Pollock, Head of Balglass, Fintry.

The junior and overall male champion, Gordon Profit from the Trustees of the late Gordon R Brooke, Upper Huntlywood, Earlston, made 8000gns selling to the Scottish Government Bull Stud, Inverness. This 18-month-old brought out by John Elliot, is the first son to be sold from Cheerbrook Profit, while the dam, Belhaven Pole Star, by Rawburn Lord Ross, produced the 40,000gns record priced Gordon Polestar, with the dam being sired by Rawburn Lord Ross.

On the same money was the April 2022-born, McCornick Night Rider, from Martin McCornick and his daughter, Gemma, Boreland, Newton Stewart. This third prize winner is a son of Skaill Dino, which sired McCornick Keira – the Royal Highland Show champion in 2019 – while the dam, McCornick Nelita goes back to McCornick Kindle. Final bidder was Kenny Adams, Torhousekie, Wigtown, Newton Stewart.

Females sold to 6500gns to average £3632 for 17. Sale leader here was the 14-month-old heifer, Duncanziemere Edwina Y503, again from the Clark family. She is also by the Auchincrieve Exodus bull and out of the Rawburn Jester Eric daughter, Duncanziemere Edwina. A first prize winner, she sold to Stuart and Angie Burgess, Maryfield, New Abbey, Dumfries

Two females made 5800gns to include the female champion, Tonley Annie, from Neil and Mark Wattie, Mains of Tonley, Alford. A daughter of Duncanziemere Jetstream, she is bred from Tonley Annie U516, and sold in calf to Shadwell Black Magic to GE Tomlinson, Red Robin, Bromley.

On the same money was the fourth prize heifer, Newton Muchalls Nutmeg Y112 from Ray Gardiner,Newton Smiddy, Lyne of Skene. A Gretnahouse Florian daughter, she won her class at the Black Beauty Bonanza last year. Nutmeg is out of Newton Muchalls Nutmeg R003, which goes back to Kitewood Elevator and sold to Paul Brewer, Dorset.
