A MIXED show of strong and fleshy hoggs met a keen demand at Dingwall and Highland Marts’ sale of 388, last week, which averaged £46.09 and sold to £73 for Cheviots from Achosnich, Dornoch. 
Top-end ewes were dearer as 329 averaged £52.55 having peaked at £93 for a Suffolk from Glebe of Deisher, Boat of Garten. 
The 69 rams and feeding sheep reached £102 for a Texel ram from 14 Airdens, Bonar Bridge, and averaged £55.64.

A GOOD show of 212 breeding cattle was easily cashed at Aberdeen and Northern Marts, last week, where females reached £2150 for a heifer with bull calf at foot and £2100 for another with heifer calf at foot, both from Craigend, Methven.
In-calf females hit £1800 for a Simmental heifer from Backhill of Seggat.

  • A few days later, store cattle averages improved on the week when 528 bullocks levelled at 230.3p per kg (+6p on the week) and 317 heifers averaged 225p (+2.8p).

Topping the entry at 280.4p was a pen of 296kg Aberdeen-Angus bullocks from Gaskbeg, Laggan, with bullocks also selling to £1395 for a 760kg Limousin from Tillylair, Strachan. A pen of five Charolais weighing 370kg from Netherton, Whitehouse, led the heifers at 270.3p with a 548kg Charolais from Wartle, Lumphanan, at £1260.
The firm also sold 1967 store sheep of all classes where hoggs (1106) met a sound demand to top at £72 for Zwartbles from Lost, Strathdon. 
Texel ewes from Huntly Lodge, Huntly, topped 103 grit ewes and Zwartbles from Breckany, Main Street, Urquhart, led 40 ewe hoggs at £84. 
Feeding sheep (718) sold to £132 for Texel ewe from Easter Aquhollie, Rickarton.

Stirling (UA)
UNITED Auctions sold 1649 store cattle last week, where Aberdeen-Angus cross bullocks topped the trade at 298p per kg for one weighing 151kg from Drumelzier and £1330 for another weighing 650kg from Westerton. 
Heifers peaked at 259.8p for a 306kg Charolais cross from Ashfield and £1290 for a 660kg Limousin cross from Crofthead.
Dairy bullocks sold to 165.8p and £910 for a 549kg Holstein cross from Haspielaw. 
Averages included 867 bullocks at 224.5p, 120 dairy bullocks at 142.11 and 620 heifers at 213.42p.
Included in the sale were 57 young bulls which levelled at 213.1p having peaked at 251p for a Simmental cross from Berryhill and £1060 for another from East Merkland. 
Some 139 cast cows sold to 170p for a Limmy cross from Chapel and £1470 for another from Teasses. They averaged 130p while 20 dairy cows levelled at 91.81p and sold to 134.9p and £855 for one from Wester Mye. 
Also forward were 1360 store hoggs and feeding sheep where hoggs peaked at £74 for Texels from Merryhill.

Carlisle
CATTLE of all classes met one of the dearest trades seen for some time at Harrison and Hetherington’s sale of 764 store and weaned cattle at Carlisle last week. 
The 485-strong entry of stores sold £60-£80 dearer on the week and to a top of £1400 for a Charolais cross bullock from BJ Harrison, Beck, and for a Limousin cross heifer from EJ and M Dobson, East View. 
A nine-month-old British Blue cross bull from WR Sparke and Son, Little Swinburn, topped 329 weanlings at £1200. 
Heifers sold to £1200 for Limousins from J and E Pattinson, Bonshawside, with bullocks to £1080 for Limousin crosses from Messrs Mattinson and Son, Burthwaite.

Quoybrae
Aberdeen and Northern Marts sold 319 store and breeding cattle alongside 790 store and prime sheep through its Quoybrae centre, on Monday. 
Store cattle sold to 265.2p per kg for two Charolais bullocks weighing 362kg from 3 Upper Dounreay, Thurso, with 167 bullocks (which averaged 223.7p) also selling to £1390 for a 669kg Charolais from Brae-edge, Castletown. 
Heifers (133) averaged 211.3p and peaked at 250p for a 396kg British Blue from Lythmore, Bridge of Westfield, and £1245 for a 556kg Limousin from Westerloch, Wick. 
In-calf Simmental cross and Limousin cross cows from Lower Westerdale, Halkirk, topped the 19 breeding cattle at £1450 apiece.
The 637 store hoggs reached £70 twice – for Cheviot from 31 Larel, Halkirk, and for Texels from Blairbuie. 
Inlcuded in the sale were 30 prime hoggs which hit 167.9p for a pair of 39kg Texels from Clachan, Mid Clyth, and £74 for a 49kg Texel from Smiddyquoy. 
Feeding ewes and rams (123) reached £100 for Beltex from Copperfield, Harpsdale.

LAWRIE and Symington sold 238 store cattle on Tuesday which met a brisk trade throughout. 
They sold to 256.4p per kg for a 390kg Limousin heifer from Messrs Simpson, Mains of Creuchies, with the 112 heifers (which averaged 222.7p) also hitting £1200 for a 545kg Limousin from W McLaren, Muirhouses. 
The 125 bullocks also levelled at 222.7p, having peaked at 252.6p for a 475kg Limmy from JH Garbutt and Sons, Sketewan, and £1335 for a 650kg Aberdeen-Angus from Hattonmill Farms.

A LARGER show of 2792 store hoggs and feeding ewes ensured all classes met a strong demand at C and D Auction Marts, last week. 
Selling for the top price among the hoggs was a pen of Beltex from Clints Farming, Crookston, at £79 while cast sheep reached £71 for both Texel ewes from Churchview and rams from Alnham Castle. 
Also forward were 115 store cattle and suckled calves, where Aberdeen-Angus bullocks from Fiona Gibson, Southwoodhead, topped at £1160 on three occasions while heifers reached £1110 for Limousins from Chapel House.

Store cattle reached 246.8p per kg for Limousin cross heifers from Farhills, with heifers also reached £1080 for Charolais crosses from Barberhall.
Bullocks sold to 242.2p for a pen of Charolais crosses from N and M Brough, Cotland, and £1260 for a pen of nine Charolais from S Black and Son, Hillside. 
Overall averages levelled at 215p for bullocks and 209p for heifers.
Cast cattle levelled at 121p having reached 146p from Nether Barr and £1150.92 from Culnaightrie.
