Carlisle
DESPITE a wintry morning, a strong entry of cattle was on offer at Harrison and Hetherington, which included the March show and sale of continental cross calves (see separate report on page opposite).
The weekly sale of 294 stores peaked at £1340 for British Blue bullocks from Bolton Wood Lane, with heifers to £1080 for Limousins from High Bow. 
A good show of 250 weaned calves saw Limousin bulls from Woodhouse Lane top at £1145, with Limmy bullocks from Orton Hall to £1030 and Limousin heifers from Tarn How to £950. 
On Monday, the firm sold a selection of breeding sheep where a top of £78 per life was paid for a three-shear Suffolk ewe and lamb from Messrs Brough, Clappers, who also sold Texel three-shears with Suffolk-sired twins at foot for £76, or £228 per unit.

St Boswells
NATIVE cattle met a strong trade throughout Harrison and Hetherington’s sale of 851 store cattle, last week, where averages improved on the year as bullocks levelled at 242.16p per kg (+17p on the year) or £963.51 (+£53), and heifers averaged 217.69p (+11p) or £771 (+£85). 
Selling for the top gross price of £1510 was an Aberdeen-Angus bullock from Messrs Weir, Cortleferry, with more Angus bullocks, this time from Nisbet Mill, making 279.3p. 
Heifers sold to £1315 for Angus from Roxburgh Mains and 290.5p for a pen of Salers from Nisbet Mill.

Thainstone
TRADE was sharper on the week for a lesser quality when Aberdeen and Northern Marts sold 1292 store cattle, where 745 bullocks levelled at 230.8p per kg (+0.6p on the week) and heifers averaged 228.5p (+3.7p) for 541 sold. 
A pen of five Limousin cross heifers weighing 250kg from Newton of Budgate, Cawdor, Nairn, topped at 304p, with heifers also hitting £1380 for a pair of 582kg Simmentals from Woodside of Balgaveny, Forgue. 
A trio of 294kg Limmy crosses from 196 Lennabirichen, Dornoch, led the bullocks at 292.5p and a 792kg Charolais cross from Deskie, Glenlivet, topped the gross trade at £1445. 
Young bulls (six) sold to 220.5p for a 390kg Charolais from Kierfold, Sandwick, and £900 for a 538kg Simmental from Home Farm, Wardhouse.
Of the Orkney and Shetland cattle, a pair of 370kg Charolais bullocks from Mucklehouse, Swannay, led at 275.6p with a pen of 352kg Charolais heifers from the same home at 257.1p. Charolais from How, Sanday, topped the gross trade at £1195 for a 576kg heifer and £1180 for a 482kg bullock. 
A useful selection of 85 breeding cattle sold to advantage, where a Simmental heifer with heifer calf at foot from Fairburn, Longmanhill, topped at £2250. 
In-calf females sold to £1100 for a British Blue cross heifer from Wester Coxton, Elgin. 
Store hoggs sold dearer on the week as pure Texels from Home Farm Cairness, Fraserburgh, topped the 542 on offer at £89, while the 120 hoggs from the Shetland and Orknery islands peaked at £76.50 for Texels from Rosebank, Twatt. 
Texel gimmers off Logie Durno, Pitcaple, led the 191 grit females at £140, and Texels from Mains of Craighall, Gartly, topped the 866 feeding ewes and rams at £150.

Stirling (Cal)
TWO Shorthorn crosses from Niall Bowser, Argaty, took the champion and reserve tickets at Caledonian Marts’ show and sale of 407 native store cattle on Monday. 
Taking the championship was a heifer which later sold to the judge, David Tulloch, Riggfoot, for the top price of £1160, while the bullock that stood reserve sold to Jim Brown, Gaindykehead, for £980. 
In the Aberdeen-Angus section, 89 bullocks averaged 246p per kg and sold to 275p from AG Simpson, Portend, and £940 from Argaty, while 56 heifers levelled at 214p (+19p on the year) having peaked at 230p from both MC McDonald and Co, Beachmeanach, and BR Bayley, Midton. 
Angus heifers also sold to £1030 from W Erskine, Woodcockdale. 
Shorthorns reached 275p for bullocks from Portend and £980 for the reserve from Argaty, while heifers reached 223p from Portend and £1160 for the champion from Argaty. Shorthorn bullocks (90) averaged 219p (+30p) with 53 heifers at 201p (+6p). 
Bullocks from CC McArthur and Co, Nunnerie, topped the Luings at 225p while heifers sold to 218p from WB and AD Robertston, Balneathill. The 31 Luing bullocks averaged 212p (+13p) with eight heifers at 212p. 
Other sections saw 58 Hereford bullocks average 208p (+14p) and sell to 257p from Pollock and Carrour, Gartnagrenach; 16 Highland bullocks averaged 148p (+7p) and reached 164p and £780 from AH Kirkpatrick, Strathmore; and six Belted Galloway bullocks averaged 215p (+23p) and sold to 250p and £650 from Rettie Farming Co, Hilltown of Ballindean.

TRADE was buoyant at Wallets Marts’ sale of 423 store and cast cattle, on Monday, where well-bred cattle aged 10 to 11 months were in particular demand. 
Simmental cross bullocks from Cardoness and Kings Laggen topped the sale at £1275 while a pen of seven Limousin bullocks from R Wallace and Co, Mains of Collin, sold for 273p per kg. Bullocks cashed in to level at £981.15 or 229.5p. 
Heifers averaged 222.4p or £865.40, having peaked at £1140 for Limousins from Mains of Collin and 251.7p for Limmy crosses from P Dawson, Kirkland.

LIMOUSIN crosses from Woodlands led Lawrie and Symington’s sale of store cattle on Tuesday, when bullocks realised 261.7p per kg and heifers sold for 250p. 
Limousins also topped the gross trade at £1155 for bullocks from Dyke and £1120 for heifers off Northflatt. 
Overall, the 156 bullocks levelled at 220.1p with 154 heifers at 218.3p.
