Dingwall
A GOOD show of mainly grazing cattle sold at extreme rates and top quality breeding heifers also met a keen demand at Dingwall and Highland Marts’ sale of 725 store cattle and 134 breeding heifers. 
Limousin crosses led the pence per kg trade at 288.1p for a pen of 243kg heifers from Auchmore, Muir of Ord, with bullocks to 274.4p for a pair weighing 390kg from 2 Lochend, Thurso. 
Topping the gross trade were Charolais crosses, which sold to £1250 for a bullock weighing 545kg from Easter Templand, Fortrose, and £1200 for a pen of 475kg heifers from Torgorm, Conon Bridge. 
The sale saw 293 bullocks level at 245.1p with 297 heifers at 237.7p. 
Averaging 243.6p, the 134 breeding heifers (including Hi-Health heifers) peaked at 322.7p for a 440kg Simmental cross from Blackford, Croy, and £1550 for a pair of British Blues weighing 540kg from Little Kildrummie, Nairn. 
A Charolais cross cow with heifer calf at foot from Stittenham, Ardross, topped the breeding cattle at £1550. 
Also on offer were 14 OTM cows which levelled at 130.9p and peaked at 151.4p for a Shorthorn cross from Moy Farm, Banavie, and £1170 for a Charolais cross from Kindeace, Alness.

Carlisle
A GOOD number of 475 store cattle was matched by the quality on show at Harrison and Hetherington, where trade peaked at £1425 for an Aberdeen-Angus cross bullock from Messrs Palmer, Longrigg Thorn, Carlisle. 
The same home topped the heifer trade at £1405 for another Angus, while continental cattle were topped by Limousin crosses at £1335 for a heifer from Messrs Craik, Redcastle, Castle Douglas, and £1295 for a pair of bullocks from Messrs Coates, Beck Hall, Canonbie. 
Weaned cattle reached £1200 for a Simmental bull from Messrs Hastings and Son, Auchenhill. 
On Monday, the firm held a sale of breeding sheep which met a strong demand throughout to top at £84 per life for a Texel hogg with single at foot from Messrs Ramsay, Dockray Hall. 
Ewes with lambs reached £83 for a pen of Suffolks with Texel-sired lambs from Messrs Dixon, Westfield House.

UNITED Auctions sold 2567 store and native-bred cattle, where averages included 1410 bullocks at 231.33p per kg, with 54 dairy-bred bullocks at 165.21p and 1042 heifers at 222.58p. 
Hereford crosses from Balgown topped at 289.7p for a 271kg bullock and 281.4p for a 279kg heifer. 
Otherwise, a 616kg Simmental cross bullock from Demperston topped the gross trade at £1290 and a 601kg Charolais cross heifer from Holehouse made £1280. 
Dairy bullocks reached 221.2p from Balgown and £1010 from Kilburn, while the 61 young bulls levelled at 209.23p having peaked at 232.6p for a Charolais cross from Graystale and £1190 for a Limousin cross from Knocknagael. 
A Limousin cross from Carlsae topped the 166 beef-bred cast cows at 214.4p and a Charolais cross from Baldovie made £1450. 
Beef cows averaged 138.68p while 19 dairy cows averaged 110.14p and sold to 128.4p from Carneil and £1070 from Bandirran. 
Some 25 breeding cattle were forward where a Limousin cross and a Simmental cross cow, both from Mains of Pitgur and with calves at foot, topped at £2000 apiece. 
An entry of breeding sheep saw Mule gimmers with twin Texel lambs from High Branchal top at £180.

MAINLY well-bred store cattle saw both continental and native-bred yearlings meet a great demand at United Auctions’ sale of 187 store and OTM cattle. 
Stores reached 257.1p per kg for a 350kg Limousin cross bullock from 20 High Street, Archiestown, with bullocks also selling to £1200 for a Limousin cross from Kinminity, Newmill. 
A Simmental cross weighing 320kg from Den Farm, Fochabers, topped the heifers at 250p with a Limousin cross from Upper Tillathrowie, Gartly, at £1195. 
In all, the 72 bullocks averaged 232.4p with the 94 heifers at 220.7p. 
Averaging 133.4p, the 21 cast cows reached 174.5p and £1300 for a Limousin from Auchorties, Keith.

CATTLE continued to sell well at Craig Wilson’s Fair Day sale of 883 store cattle, where a pen of Aberdeen-Angus bullocks from Laigh McGowanston topped the gross trade at £1365. 
Bullocks (511) also reached 281.4p per kg for a pen of Charolais from Drumbowie and cashed in to average 239.7p or £978.96. 
The 90 dairy bullocks averaged 153.7p or £672.81 and sold to 212.4p from West Lochridge and £910 from South Biggart. 
Among the heifers, where 282 averaged 224.8p or £863.32, it was a pen of Angus from Mid Lugtonridge that topped the price per kg trade at 297.4p while Limousins from Lanemark made £1340.

TRADE was booming at Harrison and Hetherington’s sale of 812 store cattle, where the champion from the pre-sale show, a Blonde cross bullock from Orchard Farm, Hawick, sold for £1120. 
The reserve champion, a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Anderson, Headshaw, Lauder, topped the price per kg trade at 319p, while another of the same from Messrs Matthewson, Soutra, topped the gross trade at £1370. Heifers averaged 230p (+4p on the previous sale) or £901.33. 
Bullocks peaked at £1290 for Limousins from Soutra and 306.1p for Charolais from Cortleferry. They averaged 243.3p (+9p) or £1005.29.

DEMAND for store cattle outstripped supply as trade showed an increase on the year when Craig Wilson sold 602 stores at its Fair Day sale. 
Averages were up on the year as 367 beef-bred bullocks averaged 233p per kg or £1014.45 (+22p or +£103.05), while 57 dairy bullocks levelled at 166.6p or £767.81 (+18.4p or £166.80), with 160 heifers at 221.5p or £875.84 (+18.2p or £121.10). 
Selling for the top price of 292p were Limousin cross bullocks from T McCulloch, Blackcraig, with bullocks also hitting £1445 for a pair of Charolais from J Drennan, Balgracie. 
Dairy-bred bullocks sold to £1000 for Montbeliarde crosses from J McKenna, Gass, and 205.2p twice – for a pen of 14 Friesians from A and K Dunlop, West Cairngarroch, and again for five Friesians from R and D Wilson, High Barness. 
A Simmental cross from J McCornick, Drumjargon, topped the heifers at £1280 and a Limousin cross from A McMillan, Garheugh, made 266.7p.

GRAZING cattle met a fast-selling pace as large numbers were short of buyers’ requirements at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ sale of 1599 store cattle. 
Averages were up on the week as 832 bullocks levelled at 249.7p per kg (+12.3p) while 744 heifers averaged 242.2p (+2.1p). 
Selling for the top price of 334.6p were pens of Charolais and Limousin bullocks from Lythmore, Bridge of Westfield, with bullocks also hitting £1480 for a 694kg Limousin from Little Whiterashes, Turriff. 
Heifers reached 327.9p for a pen of six Limmies weighing 244kg from Lythmore, as well as £1350 for a 658kg Limousin from Stillswells, Bonnykelly. 
Of the Orkney and Shetland cattle it was a pen of four Charolais bullocks weighing 396kg from Norville, Norby, Sandness, that topped at 276.5p with a 550kg Charolais bullock from Upper Lea, Stromness, at £1215. 
Heifers from the islands peaked at 250p for a pair of 412kg Charolais from Hall of Clestrain, Orphir, and £1155 for a 518kg Simmental from Kierfold, Sandwick.
The 23 bulls peaked at 233.9p for a Simmental from Raefin, Keith, and £1170 for a Limousin from Brewthin, Cullerlie. 
The firm also sold 2040 sheep of all classes where ewes with lambs at foot (831) met an excellent demand to top at £100 per life for Texel crosses with twins from Bogiefeulach, Tornaveen. 
Black lambs from Middlehill, Rothienorman, topped the 625 store hoggs at £78 and continentals from Rossmyre, Grimbister, led the 103 island hoggs at £57. 
Texels from Logie Druno, Pitcaple, topped the 481 feeding sheep at £119.50.

AVERAGES rose on the year as a good show of grazing cattle sold at recent high rates through Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ Quoybrae centre, as bullocks (345) averaged 240.6p per kg (+16.3p) and 233 heifers levelled at 237.7p (+20.1p).
A pen of 358kg Limousin cross bullocks from 2 Forss, Thurso, topped at 290.5p, with bullocks also selling to £1500 for a 785kg Charolais cross from Brae-edge, Castletown. 
A 334kg Charolais cross from 3 Forss, Thurso, led the heifers at 284.4p and a 600kg Charolais cross from Buckies Farm, Thurso, made £1160.

ON Monday, Caledonian Marts sold 438 store and breeding cattle, where stores peaked at 280p per kg for Simmental heifers and 274p for Simmental bullocks, all from GS Stewart, Wester Whin, Slamannan. 
An Aberdeen-Angus bullock from J Walker, Glenwhilk, Doune, topped the gross trade at £1480 with heifers to £1070 for a pen of Charolais from M and J Lamont, Shutterflat, Beith. 
With bullocks levelling at 227p and heifers at 225p, bulls averaged 141p having sold to 179p for Shorthorns from R Clowes, Newhall, and £1000 for a Hereford from FB Sangster, Badenkep. 
Dairy cattle averaged 142p and sold to 168p and £910 from WC Smith, Cuff. 
A small selection of breeding cattle peaked at £1750 for a Charolais cow with calf from McMurrich Partnership, Ballater Drive, Causewayhead.
Also sold were 440 breeding sheep and store hoggs, where a pen of broken-mouthed Texel cross ewes with twins at foot from AD Kinnimonth, Kinnighallen, topped at £166.
Stores reached £72 for a pen of Texel crosses from N McNaughton, Duallin.

Organic cattle reached 334.4p per kg for a pen of Charolais bullocks from Matthew Hamilton, Woolfords, while Simmental bullocks from Leo Petrucci, Outer Blair, topped the gross trade at £1480. 
Heifers reached £1290 for Simmentals from Outer Blair and bullocks levelled at 282.4p with heifers at 242.3p. 
In the conventional section, bullocks averaged 226.7p and sold to £1070 for Montbeliardes from Gimmenbie and 272.4p for Aberdeen-Angus from Longrigg. 
Heifers levelled at 216p having peaked at £1090 for Angus off Kirkbride and 262p for Charolais from Skipmyre.
