Carlisle
MORE than 500 head of forward store cattle were presented at Harrison and Hetherington’s sale which was topped at £1390 by a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Grice, Newtown, Carlisle. 
Heifers peaked at £1275 for a Simmental cross from Messrs Hasting, Auchenhill, Dalbeattie. 
The entry of 294 weaned calves hit a top of £1000 per head paid for two Limousin bulls from Messrs Pattinson, Bonshawside.

* The firm’s monthly beef breeding sale saw a larger show of cows and heifers with calves, despite being weathered, sold better than vendors expected. 
Top price was £2420 paid for a Limousin heifer with heifer calf at foot from Powe Croft Cottage.
Rams sold the same day saw 261 entered which peaked at £900 for a Dutch Texel from TP Wigham, Hargill House, purchased by CA and JG Skidmore, Needless Hall.
The run of 42 Texel shearling and ram lambs from GJ Toppin, Basco Dyke, sold to £840 to average £420.63.
On Monday, a smaller show of 710 store lambs were forward, where, due to seasonal weather, demand was sharper on the week.
Trade topped at £84 apiece for two Dutch Texels from S Dalton, Greenside Kemp, Hallbankgate.

Stirling (Cale)
ALL classes of breeding sheep were easier on the year at Caledonian Marts’ sale of 2888 breeding sheep which included draft blackface ewes and gimmers.
Top price was £220 per head paid for a pen of eight Blackface gimmers from Ian Hunter, Dalchirla, purchased by Robert McKay, Millpark, Oban. The 345 Blackface Gimmers averaged £81.63 (-£11.51).
Overall, 1692 Blackface ewes averaged £38.88 (-£24.28 on the year). They sold to £60 from A Malcolm and Son, Cromlix and K and A Graham, Easterton.
Cross ewes (569) levelled at £55.05 (-£16.79), selling to £80 from K and A Graham, Easterton, for a pen of three-crop Mule ewes, with 200 cross gimmers peaking at £125 for Cheviot Mules from JS Hastie, Sunnybraes, to average £100.77 (-£18.82).
The entry of 20 Swaledale shearling rams also slipped by £109 to average £113.08. Top price here was £380 from RN and IM Beaty, Stennerskeugh. 

* On Monday, bullocks averaged 211p per kg and heifers at 201p, at the firm’s sale of 592 store cattle.
Charolais led the bullock trade at 300p from J McLaren, Murrayshall, Stirling and £1200 for an entry from J Hyslop, Baluskie, Barrhill.
A Charolais also topped the heifer price per kg at 333p from J McLaren, Murrayshall, Stirling, while top price per head was £1250 paid for a Limousin from B Harper, Greenwells, California.
Black and white bullocks averaged 140p having sold to 151.7p from Mershaugh Farm, Ervie and to £750 from W Baxter, Gryffeside, Kilmacolm. 
The 2543 store lambs and feeding ewes hit a top of £65 for Suffolk cross lambs from J and M Ritchie and Son, Barrduff, and A Jones, Coull, Isle of Islay.

ORGANIC cattle proved the star attraction at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ sale of 1450 store cattle, which included 77 West Highland calves, 58 organic, 49 young calves and 21 bulls, where averages improved by 25-56p per kg.
Bullocks (553) averaged 220.4p (+0.2p) having sold to 337.1p per kg for a pen of four 178kg Charolais crosses from Cairntack, Belhelvie and £1390 gross for a 694kg Limousin Cross from Muirton, Corse. 
Charolais heifers from Cairntack also topped the sale of 692 heifers at 272.3p for a pen of five, while a 692kg Limousin, from Netherton Forres made £1450. Heifers averaged 210.7p (-3.3p).
There was no change on the year amongst the 56 West Highland weaned bullocks which averaged 230.4p per kg, having sold to 359.4p for a pair of 192kg Limousin crosses from 7 Aird, Sleat and £910 for a pair of 394kg Simmental crosses from 4 Greep, Dunvegan.   
Weaned heifers (21) averaged 205.6p (-1.7p on the year) which peaked at 321.4p and £630 for a 196kg Limousin Cross from 7 Aird.  
Organic cattle rose significantly on the year, with bullocks by 56.4p to level at 263.8p, while heifers improved by 24.7p to 231.3p.  
Top price was  283.8p per kg paid for four 370kg Stabilisers from New Holland, Holm and £1280 for a 532kg Hereford cross from Upper Wheedlemont, Rhynie. Heifers hit a top of 262.6p for seven 396kg Stabilisers from New Holland and £1200 for a 504kg Hereford cross from Upper Wheedlemont.    
Bulls (21) averaged 232.8p and sold to 302.1p for a 192kg Shorthorn from Woodend, Auchterless and £860 for a 420kg Limousin from Glenlea, Lumphanan. 
Orkney and Shetland cattle peaked at 283.7p for four 370kg Stabilisers and £1250 for two 462kg Stabiliser crosses from New Holland, Holm. 
The entry of 3665 sheep from Orkney and Shetland saw island lambs (3083) sell to £74.50 for Suffolks from Findlins, Hillswick, with Texel ewes from Biggins, Toab, topping the 582 adult sheep at £87.

Dingwall
SOME 555 yearling weaned calves were forward for Dingwall and Highland Marts’ annual show and sale of native and continental store cattle which saw a top price of £1190 paid for the champion continental.
This was a 490kg Limousin cross from WJ and GA Fraser, Little Croy, Croy, with the reserve honours presented to a 440kg Limousin cross bullock from J Munro and Son, Invercharron, which later made £1140.
In the Aberdeen Angus section, a 370kg bullock from TJ and G Maclean, 1 Raddery, Fortrose, picked up the championship honours and realised £840, while the reserve a 470kg bullock from ELM Laing, Wester Fearn, Ardgay, made £970.
By the end of the day, 204 continental bullocks averaged 225.5p having sold to 273.1p per kg for 443kg Limousin crosses from WF Cruickshank and £1230 per head for a 530kg Limousin cross from Dunmaglass Estate.
Continental heifers (116) levelled at 212.6p peaking at 253.5p for a 355kg Simmental cross from J Cameron, Balmacaan, Drumnadrochit and £1115 for 530kg Charolais crosses from E Fraser, Gorthleck Mains, Gorthleck.
Aberdeen-Angus and native-bred bullocks (88) cashed in at 208.8p having sold to 229.5p for a 305kg Aberdeen Angus cross from DA Gordon, Inchindown, Invergordon and £1140 for 572kg British Shorthorn crosses from MR and SD Dunnett, Achvarasdal Farm, Thurso.
Native heifers (47) sold to 216.7p for a 270kg British Shorthorn cross from J Cameron, Balmacaan, Drumnadrochit and £1100 for a 525kg entry of the same breed from NR Laing, Milton Croft. They averaged 196.1p.
The entry of four breeding cattle hit a top of £1600 for a Limousin cross cow with heifer calf at foot from M Maclean, 50 North Tolsta, Isle of Lewis.
OTM cows (96) averaged 141.0p having  sold to 205.6p and £1550 for a 915kg Stabiliser cross from Wester Rarichie, Nigg.

* Top lots of ewes and gimmers met a firm enquiry at the firm’s sale of breeding ewes which saw 3558 head average £51.77 having sold to £101 for Cheviots from Craiglea Croft, Duncanston.
Feeding ewes (703) peaked at £68 for a Cheviot from West Drumlian, Bonar Bridge, to average £37.30.
Top price amongst the 1311 gimmers which averaged £89.98, was £156 paid for Cheviots from Greenacres, Barbaraville.
Feeding sheep (42) sold to £88 for a Texel ram from 2 Forss, Thurso.

* Quality lambs met satisfactory rates at Friday’s sale of 6140 store lambs which averaged £37.49 having sold to £64 for a cross from Balcherry, Tain.
The entry of 656 lambs from Lewis Livestock Producers averaged £33.91 and sold to £53.50 for Texel crosses from 24B Lionel, Ness.

BULLOCKS averaged 213.19p and heifers cashed in at 200.26p per kg at United Auctions sale of 1743 store cattle and 228 cast cows and forward cattle.
Bullocks (907) sold to 260.20p for a 246kg British Blue cross from Drumelzier, and £1330 for a 586kg Charolais cross from Scotstarvit.
Leading the 662 heifers at 232.60p was a 516kg Limousin cross from Barlae, with a 598kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Scotstarvit making £1220.
Black and white bullocks (158) averaged 138.86p peaking at 170.30p and £850 for a 499kg Holstein Friesian cross from Mosshead.
A Charolais cross from Falleninch, topped the entry of 16 young bulls at 214.6p, while a Limousin cross from Whitrighill  made £1310. They averaged 181.86p.
Leading the entry of 211 beef cast cows at 187.9p was an Angus cross from Gallahill, while a Simmental cross from Snaigow made £1450. They averaged 125.82p.
Dairy cows (14) averaged 99.39p peaking at 121.40p and £845 for a Holstein Friesian cross from Barclye.

* On Saturday, the firm had forward 328 breeding cattle and 7941 head for its annual sale of Blackface draft ewes and gimmers.
Stock cattle from Classlochie led the trade with a Limousin cow and heifer calf selling for £4000, while a British Blue bull from the same home made £6400.
Entries from West Thomaston, Banknock, led the heifer trade with heifers with heifer calves making £3700, while heifers with bull calves sold to £3100. The former was paid for a Limousin cross outfit, while the latter was a British Blue cross.
The sheep entry was topped by a pen of 10 gimmers from E Macmillan, Lurg, which made £480 to Ian Warren, Badachro, while draft ewes peaked at £310 for a pen of 25 from the same home, purchased by Messrs Brannigan, Co Tyrone.
Breeding sheep averages were well down on the year, with accredited Blackface ewes slipping £13.09 to average £64.12 while non accredited ewes levelled at £47.33 (-£34.33). Acc BF gimmers £87.80 (-£15.76) and non acc gimmers £95.58 (-£41.92).

* ON Monday some 11,335 store and breeding sheep were sold where averages mostly improved on the week. FORWARD and quality sorts met a similar trade to the last sale with weathered sorts harder going at Craig Wilson’s sale of 501 store cattle.
Overall, 218 bullocks averaged 208.7p per kg or £896.73 with 246 heifers at 201.9p, or £816.30 and 37 Friesian bullocks at 141.2p or £689.32
Top price was £1480 paid for a Limousin bullock from Netherton, Dalrymple or 239.6p per kg for Limousin bullocks off Markhill.
Heifers peaked at £1180 for a Charolais from Eskechraggan and an Aberdeen-Angus from Bowfield, or 229.8p for a Limousin from Maxwelston.
A pen from Auchinbay, led the Friesian bullock section at £950, while Outerwood sold the lead priced lot at 169.8p per kg.
With more dairy farmers in attendance, a weathered show of 1492 store lambs were £3-£4 per head dearer on the week.
Top price was £64.50 for a pen of Texel lambs from High Cairn Farm, Kirkconnel.

MULE ewe lambs sold to £88 from Farding James at C and D Auction Marts’ third sale which included store lambs.
The entry of 1450 head which included store lambs and some 300 breeding rams, saw store lambs sell to £62 for Suffolks from Hill Farm.
Leading the ram sale at £610 was a Texel shearling from Newmains.

STORE cattle from The Goddens, produced the lead prices per head at Lawrie and Symington’s sale of 380 head.
Leading at £1350 were Limousin and 600kg Angus cross bullocks, while 535kg Limousin cross heifers from the same home made £1260. 
Top price per kg was 264p for Limousin cross heifers from Cairnleith.
Best pen of four at the pre-sale show were Limousin bullocks from R Simpson and Son, Mains of Creuchies, which scaled 455kg and made £1180, while the Glenkilrie Partnership, Blacklunans, were placed second with four 415kg Limousin bullocks that made £1060.
Bullocks (177) sold to 261p per kg for 375kg Limousins from Glenkilrie Partnership to average 231p per kilo with heifers (203) averaged 225p.

Cockermouth
TRADE reached a top of £1185 at Mitchells Livestock Auctioneers’ fortnightly sale of store and breeding cattle at Cockermouth, last Friday, for a Limousin bullock from J and JR Manchester, Craika Lodge. 
Heifers peaked at £1165 for a Limousin heifer from A and M Roberts, Riggingill. 
Forward on the same day was a large entry of 2000 store lambs which sold to £84 for a Beltex from J Walker, Far Reach.
The firm held its annual show and sale of Swaledale breeding sheep on Monday where a total of 3822 sheep were forward. 
Top price was £195 apeice for the champion pen of two-crop ewes from Messrs Cockbain and Sons, Rakefoot, which sold to the judge, Jeff Smith.

Islay
QUALITY bred lambs were forward at United Auctions’ sale of 4976 store sheep on Islay, where, like mainland centres, trade was slightly back on the year.
They sold to a top of £64.50 for Texel crosses from Blackrock.
Also held on the same day was the show and sale of ram and ram lambs, where the reserve champion, a Suffolk, from James Bignal, Smaladh, topped the trade at £650.

DESPITE ongoing poor weather, store sheep met a satisfactory trade at Dingwall and Highland Marts’ sale at Portree on Monday, where 1737 lambs levelled at £26.89, while 1322 cast cashed in at £25.46. 
Top price amongst the lambs was £65 for Blackfaces from 15 Glenconon, Uig, while a Texel cross from 44 Borenskitaig, Kilmuir, topped the ewes at £86.
The 165 feeding sheep sold to £90 for a Cheviot ram from 18 Fiscovaig, Carbost.

AVERAGES increased on the year at Wallets Marts’ sale of 1486 native and continental-bred yearling and store cattle, where there was an increased entry of almost 200 head on the year.
The 749 continental bullocks averaged 218.9p per kg (+4.4p) or £984.68 (+£8.82) while continental heifers cashed in at 207.7p (+1.1p) or £879.06 (+£8.41). Native types saw 157 bullocks average 204.4p (+7.7p) or £914.39 (+£136.10), with 92 heifers at 192.6p (-1.4p) or £740.92 (-£95.04). 
Topping the trade were Limousins from Knockshinnoch, which included the champion, which made £1420 and 278.4p, while continental heifers reached £1190 for Limousins from P  and M Gray, Eastfield, Symington, and 262.8p for Limousin crosses from M and G Barr, Meikle Kirkland. 
Native-type bullocks sold to £1320 for Herefords from Trolane and 234.8p for Angus crosses from D and M Grierson, Shambellie Grange, New Abbey. Heifers peaked at £1050 for South Devon crosses from Glenkiln Farms, and 208.3p from the same home. 

Stornoway 
DINGWALL and Highland Marts had forward 149 cattle at its show and sale of store cattle, where the judge, Blair Duffton, presented the championship to a 274kg bullock from A Macleod, Upper Barvas, which made £660.
The reserve, a 349kg bullock from CD Macmillan, Lower Barvas made £820.
