LILAC Cottage produced the top priced bullock and heifer per head at United Auctions sale of 808 store cattle, and 268 cast cows and forward cattle, at Stirling.

Their Limousin cross entries saw a 584kg bullock make £1325 while a 610kg heifer realised £1240.

Top price per kg was 251.80p for a 278kg Charolais cross heifer from Sorn Mains, while a 346kg Limousin cross from Spittal topped the bullocks at 248.60p.

Overall, 370 bullocks averaged 212.72p, with 370 heifers at 204.93p.

The 68 black and white bullocks cashed in at 135.93p having sold to 152.30p for a 453kg Holstein Friesian cross from Whitehill, and £780 for a 608kg Holstein cross from Borland.

Upper Spittalton led the cast cow trade with Limousins at 191.60p and £1410, with the 213 averaging 119.79p.

Dairy cows (42) averaged 86.11p, peaking 113.00p and £895 for a Holstein Friesian from Carneil.

At Monday's first martinmas sale, 7127 store lambs were forward which saw Suffolks average £61.08 (+£1.35 on the week); Beltex at £65.10 (+£2.47); Texel crosses at £60.53 (+£2.70); Mules at £56.53 (+£0.30) and Blackies level at £38.56 (£7.42).

Top price was £79 paid for Beltex from East Buchanty.

TRADE peaked at £2650 at Harrison and Hetherington's show and sale of 63 beef breeding cattle, when a British Blue cross heifer with Limousin cross heifer calf at foot was sold by J and VM Bussey, Streatlam.

The same home also produced the champion heifer with a Limousin cross with seven-eighths Limousin bull calf at foot which later sold for £2520.

MORE than 800 head of store cattle plus 153 breeding cattle and 141 OTM were forward for Dingwall and Highland Marts' sale which saw 417 bullocks average 228.1p and 386 heifers cash in at 212.3p.

A 290kg British Blue cross from Shewglie Farm, Glenurquhart, attracted the lead price per kg at 303.5p, with heifers selling to 294.9p for a Limousin cross from Drummuie, Golspie.

Top per head was £1260 paid for a 675kg Angus cross from the Redhill dispersal. Bullocks sold to £1200 for a 605kg Limousin cross from 4 Glaick, Ardross.

Breeding cattle peaked at £2100 for an in-calf heifer from Rychraggan Farm, Drumnadrochit, with in-calf cows to £1600 on three occasions from the Redhill dispersal.

Rhevackin Farm, Kiltarlity, topped the heifers with calves at £1750 for a bull and £1800 for a heifer calf and Heathmount led the cows with calves at £1800 for an entry with twins; £1700 for a heifer calf and £1650 for a bull calf.

The entry of 135 prime and feeding cows averaged 117.0p having sold to 193.9p for a 655kg Simmental cross from Hilton Farm, Tain, and £1370 for a 950kg Simmental cross from Meikle Ussie, Dingwall.

Thainstone

A GOOD show was easily cashed at Aberdeen and Northern Marts sale of 589 store cattle, where bullock and heifer averages improved on the week by 1.1p and 2.2p, per kg respectively.

British Blues from Uppermill Farms, Kintore led the heifer trade at 360.8p per kg for a 388kg entry and £1580 for a 382kg heifer, with the 280 cashing in at 210.5p.

Three 292kg Limousin steers from Cairntack, Belhelvie, topped their section at 284.2p per kg, with a 624kg Simmental cross from Sprongvalley, Stronsay, attracting the lead gross price of £1300. The 303 bullocks averaged 219.6p.

Bulls (six) sold to 212.2p per kg for a 344kg Beef Shorthorn cross from The Tam, Mulben and £900 for a 476kg Simmental from Drums of Muirake, Cornhill.

Orkney and Shetland cattle sold to 231.3p for a pen of four 534kg Limousin bullocks from Gorn, Balfour from and £1250 for a 660kg Aberdeen Angus from Spring Valley, Stronsay. Heifers were led by a pen of five 408kg Limousins from Board House, Birsay which made 230.4p with a 550kg Angus from Redland, Stromness, hitting £1040.

Breeding stock were also sold with the 78 head of adult cattle selling to £1900 for a Limousin cow with heifer calf from 1 The Steading, Slacks of Cairnbanno.

Store lambs met a strong demand at the firm's sale of 2782 store lambs, breeding and feeding sheep, too when they peaked at £79 for Suffolks from Tullochgribban, Mains of Dulnain, with island lambs to £67 for Texels from Gaitnip, St Ola.

Zwartbles from Speylea, The Quarters, topped the small section of ewe lambs at £75 with breeding sheep peaking at £125 for Suffolk gimmers from Lower Wanford, Banff.

The entry of 690 ewes and rams sold to £109 for Texel ewes from Gaitnip.

A SOUND entry of 341 store cattle and suckled calves, was forward for Hexham and Northern Marts' sale where trade peaked at £1410 on two occasions for cattle from Co Durham.

First to sell at this money was a 20-month-old Charolais cross steer from Messrs Walker Bros, Satley, who sold seven steers to average £135, while the next lot; a pair of similarly aged Charolais crosses from Messrs Tweddle, Springwell, attracted the same bid .

Leading the heifer trade at £1400 was an Angus cross from Messrs Selbay and Alan Robson, Yatesfield. By the end of the day, 57 cattle sold for more than £1200.

Stores in the 11-17-month bracket also sold, with the trade largely dominated by Messrs Burn,

Grange House, Stamfordham, who sold a 15-month-old steer at £1340

Yearling and younger types peaked at £1200 for black Limousin steer from Messrs Crozier, Raggetsyke, Dumfriesshire, followed by another of the same breed from

Edward Thoburn, Pitland Hills at £1170.

The entire cattle sale averaged £995.15.

Some 4905 store sheep were also cashed which saw 18 lots of lambs sell at or above the £80 mark.

UNITED auctions last sale of the year at Islay Auction Mart saw 440 head of cattle forward where bullocks averaged 224.1p per kg or £682.93 per head with heifers at at 209.07p or £603.88. Dunlossit Farms, Lossit, sold the top priced bullock, a British Blue at £1340, with Dunlossit Farms, Knocklearach, leading the section per kg at 267p.

Leading the heifers at £940 was an entry from Uiskentuie, or 238p per kg from Knocklearach.

ON Monday, Caledonian Marts sold 358 store and suckled calves, which resulted in bullocks cashing in at 212p per kg and heifers at 198p.

Top price per kg was 283p for Limousin bullocks from Craigievern, Balfron Station, with heifers selling to 226p for Charolais from Offers, Gargunnock.

Aberdeen Angus from Rievoch, Howwod, led the gross takings with bullocks at £1150, while Limousin heifers from East Kerse, Lochwinnch making £1050.

Bulls averaged 191p having sold to 219p and £830 for Shorthorns from Highland Wagyu, Dunblane, with black and white bullocks peaking at 158p from Merslaugh, Ervie, Stranraer and £560 from Cuff, Beith. They averaged 140p.

DARLINGTON Farmers Auction Mart's weekly sale of cast, store and breeding stock on Monday, attracted an entry of 347 cattle and 1327 sheep.

Leading the entry of 105 cast cattle was a 31-month-old Blonde heifer from E Wilson, White Hills, Scorton which weighed 802kg and sold 194p per kg or £1555, while a similarly aged Limousin bull from P Leese, Fryup Hall sold for the topprice per head of £1566.

Another Blonde, an eight-year-old from F and J S Gargett, Westwick, Barnard Castle, led the cow trade at 187p or £1301 having scaled in at 696kg.

Store cattle sold to £1205 for 18-20-month-old Limousin steers from R Stelling, Holme Farm, Toft Hill, with heifers from the same home reaching £1135.

A pen of 10 Beltex from AR George, Haswell, led the store lamb trade at £85 per head, with a pen of Beltex ewe lambs from GW Dent, making £85.50
