Lockerbie 
THERE was a good entry of store cattle at Harrison and Hetherington’s recent show and sale at Lockerbie. 
At the pre-sale show, judge Declan Foley, of Mirlaw House, picked out two Limousins from Gary Bell, Haas Grove, as his champion and reserve. The former was a nine-month-old black heifer which Mr Foley later secured for £990, while the reserve was a 354kg bullock which made £1020. 
Leading the trade at £1300, however, were British Blue bullocks from DA Wilson, Belzies, as well as a pen of Limousins from I and C Richardson, Purdomstone. Top price per kg at 288.1p and 280.9p were Limousin bullocks from Haas Grove. 
Heifers reached £1290 for a 548kg Blue from Belzies, and 259.2p from Belzies. 
Overall, bullocks averaged 231.1p or £1033.83 with heifers at 225.13p or £923.75.

Lanark 
SELLING through Lawrie and Symington, last week, were 836 store cattle, where Charolais bullocks from RA Nelson, Laigh McGowanston, topped the trade at £1470. 
Bullocks also hit 261.6p for a Limousin from Mayfield to average 222.3p, while dairy bullocks averaged 154.1p and sold to 202.5p from Cobblehaugh. 
Heifers levelled at 215.2p, selling to £1280 for Limousins from Messrs Struthers, Greenbank, and 247.4p for another from Robertson Mains.

Dingwall
ALL classes sold at keen rates at Dingwall and Highland Marts’ recent sale of 2097 sheep, which included 988 hoggs, 780 ewes, 27 feeding sheep and 302 rams. 
Hoggs peaked at £75 for Cheviots from South Balkeith, Tain, while Texel crosses from Lochdhu, Nairn, topped the ewes at £96. 
A Cheviot off Mid Gruindards, Ardgay, led the rams at £160 and a Suffolk cross wedder from Balmacaan, Drumnadrochit, topped the feeders at £93.

Stirling (UA)
UNITED Auctions sold 1412 store, native-bred cattle and young bulls as well as 193 cast and forward cattle at Stirling. 
Stores hit a top of 271.1p per kg for a British Blue bullock weighing 332kg from Stuck, with the 740 bullocks (which averaged 219.12p) also selling to £1390 for a 660kg Charolais from Hoprigshiels. The 78 dairy bullocks averaged 149.54p having hit 171.4p from Creechan Park and £970 from Nether Lethame. 
Levelling at 212.15p, the 519 heifers reached 270p for a 426kg Limousin cross from Townhead of Arngibbon as well as £1225 for a 558kg Charolais cross from Low Polquheys. 
A Simmental cross from Clydeside topped the cast cows offering at 216.7p while a Limmy cross from Back o Muir made £1430. The 155 beef cows averaged 136.49p with 17 dairy cows at 96.84p. 
Also forward were 3797 store and feeding sheep at the annual cast ram and store hogg sale, where rams reached £95 for Texels from Wester Auchencarroch. 
Bluefaced Leicester hoggs from Carroch nade £80.50.

St Boswells
TRADE started off ‘with a bang’ at Harrison and Hetherington’s store sale last week, where a pen of Aberdeen-Angus cross bullocks from Messrsw Phaup, Hoprigshiels, topped the gross trade at £1385.
Bullocks also hit 261p per kg for a Limousin from Messrs Donoghue, Lamberton, and avergaed 210.7p. Heifers levelled at 212.7p having sold to £1300 and 232p for Simmentals from The Neuk. 
The reduction of breeding stock from Messrs Mather, Belford on Bowmont, reached £1450 for a trio of in-calf Hereford cross cows. 
There were 1191 sheep forward at the annual sale of cast ewes and rams, as well as store hoggs. These sold to £70 for Texel hoggs from Applecross, while there was a high demand for ram lambs/chasers as a pen of Texel cross Suffolk hoggs from Venchen topped at £87.50. 
Rams reached £79 for Charollais from Douglasdale with ewes to £77 for Bluefaced Leicesters from Tinnis.

Thainstone
ALL classes easily maintained the previous week’s rates at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ sale of 1299 store cattle, where Charolais calves led the trade. 
They reached 277.6p for a 308kg bullock from Upper Forgie, Keith, with bullocks also reaching £1490 for one weighing 652kg from Mill of Gellan, Coull. Upper Sauchen, Ordhead, led the heifer trade with Charolais at 267.2p for one at 262kg and £1480 for another at 812kg. 
Overall, the 683 bullocks averaged 224.2p (-4.2p on the week) with 449 heifers at 216p (-3.9p). 
The organic offering was topped by Stabiliser crosses from New Holland, Holm – at 260p for a pen of six bullocks weighing 350kg; £960 for a pair of 398kg bullocks; 211.2p for a pen of five heifer weighing 322kg; and £730 for a pair of 366kg heifers. 
Organic averages included 28 heifers at 237.9p and 36 heifers at 193.9p. 
The mart also offered 81 breeding cattle where an in-calf Simmental heifer from Backhill of Seggat, Auchterless, made £2300.
Store hoggs (1781) sold at recent rates to top at £70.50 for Suffolks from West Davoch, Tarland, with the 270 island hoggs to £66 for Texels from Skelbister, Orphir. 
Grit ewes (64) reached £120 for Texel crosses from Nether Backieley, Aberchirder, and feeding ewes and rams (1208) sold to £133.50 for pure Suffolks from Lower Wanford, Banff.

Lochboisdale
A MIXED show sold at values comparing very favourably to current mainland values at United Auctions’ New Year sale at Lochboisdale. 
Charolais bullocks from 136 Stiligarry topped the price per kg at 270p while Limousins from 11 Howmore led all other sections at £1280 for bullocks as well as 233p and £840 for heifers. 
A Simmental from 11 Howmore led the cast cows at £1210 with a Limousin from 22 Hacklet at 157p.

A MIXED show of cattle was on offer at Dingwall and Highland Marts’ recent sale of 154 weaned calves and store cattle. 
They reached 290p for a 300kg Limousin cross bullock from 14 Hougharry, Lochmaddy, and £880 for a 165kg Limousin cross bullock from 1 Knockline, Bayhead. The 88 bullocks averaged 207.9p. 
Heifers (66) levelled at 187.5p and sold to 262.3p and £800 for a 305kg Limousin cross from 10 Sollas, Lochmaddy, with that £800 also paid for two Limmy cross heifers weighing 350kg from 14 Hougharry. 
An Aberdeen-Angus cross from Sollas, Lochmaddy, topped the 10 cast cows at 151.9p and £980, with a Shorthorn cross from Dunskellar, Lochmaddy, also making £980.

Darlington
STORE cattle (268) met a strong trade throughout Darlington Farmers’ Auction Mart’s sale on Monday. 
The sale reached £1185 for a trio of Holstein cross British Blue bullocks from GH Watson and Son, Home Farm, Catterick, with young bulls to £1150 for Limousins from F Bainbridge, Willoughby Hall, Baldersale. Heifers hit £1100 for a Charolais from JG Wilkinson and Son, West Side, Staindrop. 
Cast cattle (150) averaged 119p per kg and peaked at 189p for aLimousin cow from WA Wardman, Thrushwood, as well as £1455 for a Charolais cow from C and J Donnelly, Bank Flow. 
Trade was good for hoggs as 995 averaged £69. They peaked at £102 for pure Texel ewe hoggs from the I Spedding, Harelaw, with stores from the same home topping the entry at £87.50.
Feeding ewes sold to £73 from SW Brisby.

BULLOCKS headed up the trade at Lawrie and Symington’s sale of 140 store cattle on Tuesday, when a 580kg Limousin cross from BM Soutar, Newhouse of Chapelton, sold for £1295 and a 385kg Romagnola cross from Meikle Coul Farms realised 255p per kg. 
Heifers hit £1200 for a 570kg Aberdeen-Angus from H MacKenzie, Damend of Alyth, and 253p for a 340kg Charolais cross from A Porter, Carmichael. 
The 66 bullocks levelled at 227p with 74 heifers at 225p.
