THERE was a smaller than normal entry at United Auctions’ early spring sale of cattle on Tiree, where bullocks averaged 233.55p per kg with heifers at 217.87p. 
All store cattle sections were topped by Charolais from the MacLean family at Heylipol, as bullocks sold to £1160 and 295p, with heifers to £1040 and 287p. 
An offering of breeding cattle reached £1400 for in-calf heifers from 13 Moss.

STRONG, well-bred outfits met a keen demand at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ sale of 103 head of breeding cattle, where entries from North Redhill, Rothiemay, topped all sections. 
The entry peaked at £2350 twice for Simmentals with calves from North Redhill.

Carlisle
ALL classes of store and feeding cattle met a firm enquiry with many more required to satisfy demand at Harrison and Hetherington. 
The weekly sale of 357 store cattle saw a smart heifers and yearling cattle in particular meet a strong demand but it was a Charolais cross bullock from Messrs Graham, Hill Head, Canonbie, that topped at £1340, while heifers hit £1335 for a Blonde from Messrs Wood, Arnold House, Ivegill.
Yearling cattle sold to £1175 for an 11-month-old Limousin cross bullock from Messrs Johnston, East Foreshields, Alston. 
The show of 371 weaned cattle included 168 bull stirks, and is was a Charolais from Messrs Mattinson, Burthwaite, that topped at £1220. Aberdeen-Angus from Campingholm topped the other sections at £1080 for heifers and £965 for bullocks. 
On Monday, the firm’s weekly sale of store hoggs and breeding sheep saw hoggs peak at £93 for Texel cross Mules from Messrs Taylor, Hill Top Farm, Penrith, with in-lamb sheep selling to £115 for Texels from Penlaw Farm.

Lockerbie
A PEN of Charolais cross heifers from Messrs Phaup, Hoprigshiels, headed up the gross trade at Harrison and Hetherington, last week, when they realised £1240.
Heifers also reached 250.7p per kg for Limousins from Lammerview and cashed in to average 220.22p. 
Bullocks levelled at 238.64p having peaked at £1200 for Limousins from Eildon and 267.6p for more of the same from Huntington. 
There was a strong trade for the small offering of store hoggs, which sold to £77 for Suffolks from Broom.

CHAROLAIS crosses from Ashmark headed up the prices per kg at United Auctions, when a 308kg bullock realised 294.7p per kg and a 289kg heifer sold for 266.4p. 
Per head, a 718kg Limousin cross bullock from Balcaskie topped at £1400 and a 666kg Charolais heifer from Newmill of Castleton hit £1340.
Overall, the 561 bullocks levelled at 230.97p while 387 heifers averaged 225.85p. 
Dairy-bred bullocks (50) levelled at 157.7p having sold to 1902p for a Holstein cross from Meikle Camoquhill and £850 for a Holstein Friesian cross from Easter Frew. 
They 52 young bulls, which levelled at 203.4p, peaked at 253.5p for a Simmental cross from Gateside, and £1280 for a Limousin cross from Drumtorber.
A large offering of cast cows reached 211.9p for an Aberdeen-Angus from Burnside of Balhaldie with a British Blue cross from Netherton topping the cross trade at £1730. Beef cows (91) averaged 150.8p while 20 dairy cows levelled at 114.52p having sold to 140.4p from Claylands and £895 from High Branchal. 
Also sold were 1882 store and breeding sheep, where breeders reached £119 for two and three-crop ewes scanned at 175% from East Mains, while crosses from Bowleys topped the store hoggs at £96.

STORE hoggs met the strongest trade of the season as 860 cashed in to average £67.89 at Dingwall and Highland Marts. 
They reached £125 for a pen of Blackfaces from Highfield Park, Conon Bridge. 
Ewes (338) averaged £47.70 and sold to £86 twice – for a Suffolk from 8 Coll, Isle of Lewis, and again for a pair of crosses from Teanluick Croft, Muir of Ord.
Rams and feeding sheep (74) peaked at £136 for a Texel ram from Dell Farm, Whitebridge.

ALL classes of the 1338 store cattle on offer at Aberdeen and Northern Marts met a fast-selling trade last week, where averages were back slightly. 
With 766 bullocks averaging 236.4p per kg (-4.4p on the week), they sold to 325.4p for a 388kg Limousin cross from Mid Fleenas, Nairn, as well as £1480 for an Aberdeen-Angus cross weighing 716kg from North Fornet, South Auchronie. 
Heifers (556) averaged 230.6p (-6.1p), having peaked at 288.6p for a 350kg Beef Shorthorn cross from Birkenburn, Keith, and £1380 for 644kg Limousin cross from North Auchronie, Skene.
The 16 young bulls sold to 219.9p for a 332kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Honeysgoe, St Margarets Hope, and £1000 for another weighing 528kg from Meikle Pitinnan, Oldmeldrum.
Of the Orkney and Shetland cattle, it was Charolais crosses from Honeysgoe that topped at 259.5p for a pen of seven heifers weighing 316kg, with a pen of five 318kg bullocks at 257.8p. Per head, a 590kg Limousin bullock from Trondheim, Rendall, hit £1350 with heifers to £1270 for a pen of four Limmies weighing 558kg from Gorn, Shapinsay. 
Store hoggs met an excellent demand as the 760 on offer peaked at £107.50 for Texels from 12 Meadowvale, Oldmeldrum, with the same home topping the 114 ewe hoggs at £102.50 with Texels. Island hoggs (141) reached £83.50 for continentals from Upper Hobbister, Stenness. 
Breeding sheep peaked at £158 for two, three and four-crop Texel cross ewes from East Town, Tarland, which topped the 601 grit ewes, while the 42 ewes with lambs reached £52 per life for continentals from Waterton, Insch. 
Feeding ewes and rams (971) sold to £135.50 for pure Texels from Milltown of Birness, Ellon.

ON Monday, Darlington Farmers Auction Mart had forward 105 cast cows; five cast steers; 300 head of store cattle and just short of 1000 store hoggs.
Cast cattle again met a flying trade, peaking at £1468 for a South Devon from P and PJ Sayer, Mount Pleasant Farm, or 196p from A and R Thompson.
Young bulls peaked at £1270 for a British Blue from T and DI Allen and Son, Chatterley Farm, with steers selling to £1170 from A Stanwix and heifers to £1085 from GL and M Steel.
Pick of the pack amongst the store hoggs at £105 per head was a pen of continentals from MJ Hutchinson, Red Gap Farm.
Longtown
SOME 440 store cattle and suckled calves were forward for C and D Auction Marts’ sale at Longtown on Tuesday where trade peaked at £1370 for a Limousin heifer from Fiona Gibson, Southwoodhead.
Bullock sold to £1310 on two occasions, for a single Limousin bullock from G Mitchinson and Sons, High Greenhill and for a pen of Limousin bullocks from WH and DA Gass, Nunscleugh.
