Kingside Farm led the price per kg with bullocks at 274p per kg as 596 bullocks levelled at 227.1p with 46 dairy bullocks at 158p.

Heifers (404) averaged 219.9p and sold to £1340 from Powflatt as well as 260p from Garpel Estate.

Carlisle

STORE cattle met an improved trade on the week at Harrison and Hetherington's sale of 401, last week, where Fishergill topped the trade at £1430 for Limousins heifers with bullocks to £1280 for British Blues from the same home.

The weaned entry reached £1025 for a trio of Limousin cross bullocks from Messrs Johnston, Orton Hall.

On Monday, the company sold a selection of store hoggs to £64 for North Country Cheviots from Lynn Shield. They entry of breeding sheep peaked at £92 per head for a pen of Texel cross ewes with Beltex-sired lambs from Messrs Watson, Millriggs.

AN entry of 1667 store cattle sold at a show and sale at United Auctions last week, where there were also 155 cast cows and forward cattle as well as 890 store and breeding sheep for sale.

Store cattle peaked at 282p per kg for a 344kg Limousin bullock from Calton, with the 1082 bullocks (which averaged 234.81p with 16 dairy-bred bullocks at 140.5p) also selling to £1360 for a Simmental cross weighing 648kg from Crookedstonemuir.

Averaging 227.37, the 564 heifers peaked at 267.8p for a 422kg Charolais cross from Downfield and £1270 for a 538kg British Blue cross from Buteland.

Cast cows (136) met a strong trade to average 148.52p, hitting tops of 217p for a Limousin cross off Cumberhead with a Simmental cross from Teasses Estate to £1510.

A Holstein cross from Bandirran led the dairy cow section at 139.2p and £1130, as the 17 averaged 113.68p.

Texels from Tigh Na Blair led the store hoggs at £83, with breeding sheep to £118 for Aberfield gimmers scanned with twins from Cairncross.

BULLOCKS headed up United Auctions' sale of 181 store, breeding and OTM cattle, last week, when a 360kg Limousin cross from Dalbeallie, Knockandhu, realised 272p per kg and an Aberdeen-Angus cross from Easter Newton, Lumphana, sold for £1335.

The 92 bullocks levelled at 228.7p while the 68 heifers averaged 217.1p, having peaked at 241.5p for a 410kg Charolais cross from Easter Corrie, Botriphnie, as well as £1150 for a Charolais cross from Nethermills, Grange.

An in-calf Limousin cross cow from Kirdels School House, Knockandhu, led the 10 breeding cattle at £1010, while the 11 OTM cattle sold to 191p and £1310 for a Simmental cross from Followsters, Keith.

St Boswells

CATTLE were a credit to vendors at Harrison and Hetherington's annual show and sale of native-bred cattle, where a pre-sale show was judged by D Foley, Mirlaw House.

He backed his decision to buy the champion, an Aberdeen-Angus cross bullock from Stobo Home Farm, Peebles, for £1300 to top the sale. In reserve was an Angus cross heifer from Messrs Hendry, Symington Mains, which went on to realise £1150.

Stobo also presented the best pen of six or more native cattle in the shape of Angus cross bullocks which realised £1240, while the reserve, a pen of heifers from Wester Middleton, made £1175.

Out with the show, topping the price per kg at 288.1p was a pen of nine Angus cross bullocks from Messrs Lowrie, Blegbie, with heifers to 254.1p for Angus crosses from Whitlaw. Heifers also peaked at £1220 for an Angus from Messrs Weir, Cortleferry.

Averages improved on the week/fortnight/year as bullocks levelled at 256.16p (+14p) or £1046.91 (+£83) with heifers at 226.94p (+9p) or £870.94 (+99).

Thainstone

ALL classes of 1702 store cattle sold through Aberdeen and Northern Marts continued to sell at recent excellent rates, as 1083 bullocks cashed in to average 243.8p per kg (-0.5p on the year) with 618 heifers at 236.4p (+1.6p).

They reached 319.1p for a British Blue bullock weighing 282kg from Fodderletter, Tomintoul, with bullocks also hitting £1495 for a pair of 682kg Charolais from Sillerton, Auchterless.

A 616kg Blue heifer from Chapelford, Buckie, topped the gross trade at £1500, while a pair of Limousins weighing 468kg realised 288.5p.

Of the Orkney and Shetland cattle, a pen of four 274kg Aberdeen-Angus bullocks from Redland, Stromness, made 282.8p with 614kg Blue bullocks from Cleat, St Ola, to £1260. It was, however, a pen of 568kg Blue heifers from Cleat that topped this section's gross trade at £1270, with heifers also selling to 267.5p for a pair of 370kg Limmies from Oback, South Ronaldsay.

Store hoggs were again very dear as the 878 mainland hoggs reached £115 for continentals form Little Muddie, Lumphart, with the 322 hoggs from the islands to £91 for Suffolks from Reawick Farm, Reawick.

Ewe hoggs (11) sold to £84 for Cheviots from Isbister, North Roe, and the 17 grit ewes hit £80 for continentals from Backhill of Crimond, Keithhall.

Suffolks from Casdgerford, Kingswells, headed up the 1708-strong entry of feeding sheep at £173.50.

WHILE averages were reduced slightly compared to the prevous sale, they were reported as no cheaper at Wallets Marts' sale of store and OTM cattle.

Stores reached £1280 for a pen of Limousin bullocks from JF Fisher, Flathill, with bullocks also hitting 249p per kg for a pen of Charolais crosses from J Mair and Son, Bargatton. Bullocks (268) levelled at 232p or £968.51.

Heifers (169) sold to £1125 for Charolais crosses from WJ Davidson, Poldean, as well as 255.5p for Limousin crosses from KS MacTier and Son, Boghouse, and cashed in to average 219.22p or £880.03.

The 34 OTM cattle averaged 140.03p or £753, having peaked at £1272 for a British Blue cross from Messrs Robb, Trolane, as well as 170p for an Aberdeen-Angus cow from Castlegower.

AT Darlington Farmers' Auction Mart, 249 store cattle sold to a top of £1210 for a Limousin bullock from Laing Bros, Grange Farm, with heifers to £1150 for a Simmental from Messrs Walker and Logan, Meavy Cottage.

Young bulls reached £1150 for a Charlais from R Valks, Field House Farm, and the 41 breeding cattle hit £1700 for a British Blue heifer and her month-old Limousin cross bull calf from T and G Lee, East Crane Row.

The 117 cast cows sold to 195p per kg for a Limousin from JR Bainbridge, Ettergill, as well as £1323 for a British Blue from RA Patterson and Son, Whitehouse.

Also forward was a selection of store and breeding sheep, where the 623 store hoggs reached £128 for a Suffolk from A and B Herworth, Crake Scar.

Ewes with lambs (77) hit £205 per family for a pen of three-crop Suffolk ewes with twins from N Howard, Field House, with the 60 in-lamb females to £102 three times for Suffolk cross hoggs from JP and R Ward, Cragg Top.

A TOTAL of 341 native-bred store cattle were on offer at Caledonian Marts, on Monday, where a pre-sale show was judged by John Ramsay, of Garth House, Dalton.

He picked out a yearling Shorthorn bullock from Niall Bowser, Argaty, as his champion which later sold to J Paterson, Garrionhaugh, Lanark, for £1180. The reserve, a Luing heifer from R McNee, Woodend, was knocked down to Jim Brown, Gaindykehead, for £960.

J Dunlop, Blackwater, presented the best pen of four in the shape of Shorthorn bullocks which made £1110.

Aberdeen-Angus bullocks averaged 248p per kg and sold to 273p for a pen of 11 from M McDonald, Beachmenach, while heifers averaged 220p and sold to 240p from the same home.

Shorthorns reached 263p twice for bullocks from RSPB Loch Gruinart, Isle of Islay, and AG Simpson, Portend, and averaged 223p. Shorthorn heifers sold to 236p from Loch Gruinart and averaged 202p.

Among the Hereford offering, bullocks reached 254p from AJ Mackie, High Belltrees, to average 244p with heifers to 243p from AG and ME Batemant, Langholm, to average 234p.

Luing bullocks peaked at 222p from R McNee and averaged 217p, while Belted Galloway bullocks hit 216p from W Glover, Cladville, Islay, and averaged 202p.

Longtown

A GOOD show of 1710 store hoggs easily met the highest rates of the season at C and D Auction Marts, where the sale averaged £69.75.
