LIMOUSINS from Nethermyres topped Lawrie and Symington's sale of 28 prime cattle last week, when a bullock weighing 710kg made £1633 and a 527kg heifer sold for 270p per kg.

Bullocks also reached 246p for a 611kg Limousin from Nethermyres with heifers to £1591.80 for a 758kg Limousin from Pityot.

Averaging 225.8p, the 741 prime hoggs peaked at 266.7p for 45kg Beltex from Balbrydie and £127 for 60kg Texels from Mains of Dalrulizion.

Beltex from Mains of Dalrulzion topped the 132 cast ewes at £139.

Huntly

A MIXED entry for quality was forward in the hogg ring at Huntly last week, where well-fleshed hoggs met a firm enquiry and were short of buyer's requirements.

The 2370 old season lambs peaked at 265p per kg for 38.5kg Beltex from 18 Richmond Gardens, Rhynie and £126 for 68kg Texels from Midtown of Buchromb, Dufftown.

Heavy ewes (953) met a firm enquiry and peaked at £142 for Suffolks from The Cottage.

Dumfries

A SMALL show of 76 prime cattle met keen competition at C and D Auction Marts' Dumfries centre, last week, where trade reached 230p per kg for Limousin heifers from A Martin, Horseholm.

OTM cattle sold at increased rates for all classes, with 39 dairy cows averaging 119.3p and 26 beef cows at 141.4p.

Top price among the beef cows was 184p and £1416.80 for a Limousin from Glenstockdale, while a Fleckvieh from Slacks led the dairy types at 151p and £1251.60.

Trade held up well among the 893 prime sheep when hoggs sold to £137 for Texels from Druidhall and cast ewes and rams peaked at £169.50 for Texel ewes from Riggheads.

Cockermouth

PRIME hoggs continued to sell well at Mitchell Auction Company's sale of 1770 when they peaked at £140 for Beltex from Nook and 326.90p per kg for Beltex from Keskadale.

The 319 cast sheep saw ewes reach £137 for Suffolks from Millstone Moor, while rams sold to £129 for Cheviots from Penny Hill.

A good entry of 66 prime cattle was forward, where young bulls sold to 219.50p and £1371.88 for a Limousin from Prospect House, while cast cows realised 152.50p for a Limousin from Gatesgarth and £1097.55 for a Holstein Friesian.

Thainstone

LIMOUSIN heifers topped the sale of prime cattle at Aberdeen and Northern Marts when they peaked at 257p per kg for a 610kg from Cairncoullie, Glenkindie, as well as £1567.70 for another weighing 610kg from the same home.

Heifers (13) cashed in to average 228.4p (+9.3p on the week) while 12 bullocks levelled at 198.4p and sold to 229p for a 595kg Limousin from Whiteside, Tullynessle and £1508.90 for a 790kg Limousin from Biffie, Old Deer.

A large offering of 186 beef cows averaged 153.6p and sold to 185p for a 600kg Limousin from Moss-side of Gight, Fyvie, and £1790 for a 1140kg Simmental from Cairnorrie, Methlick.

Four dairy types levelled at 114.4p and peaked at 125.7p for a 680kg Holstein Friesian from Newton of Darnaway, Forres, and £885 for another from the same home weighing 710kg.

Bulls (eight) averaged 124.1p (-5.8p) and sold to 136.2p and £1410 for a 1035kg Charolais from Olrig Mains, Castletown. Also realising £1410 was a 1225kg Beef Shorthorn from Kirkton, Melvich.

In the sheep, all well-fleshed prime lambs met an excellent demand with the 2772 old season lambs averaging 237.8p (-6.3p) and 1902 SQQs at 240.6p (-5.9p). They sold to 296.5p for 43kg Beltex from Home Farm, Aberlour, and £132.50 for 59kg Texels from 2 Wood Cottages, Newmachar and 63kg Suffolk crosses from Bruceland, Elgin.

New season lambs (15) levelled at 235.2p and sold to 246.9p for 48kg Charollais and £125.50 for 57kg Charollais from Logie Durno, Pitcaple.

Stirling (Cal)

HEIFERS topped Caledonian Marts' sale of 85 prime cattle last Thursday, when a Limousin from Learielaw realised 260 per kg and another from MA Blyth, Lochfield, Doune, made £1755.60.

While heifers averaged 222p, bullocks levelled at 220p and sold to 252p and £1688.40 for a British Blue from W Dandie and Sons, Learielaw, Broxburn.

Young bulls levelled at 21p and sold to 215p for a Limousin from WAS Hume, Easter Clune, Dunfermline, and to £1535.04 for a Charolais from A Purdon, Easterton, Caldercruix.

Despite a much plainer show for quality on the week, the 66 cast cows sold sharper on the week with beef cows averaging 148p and dairy cows at 116p. Beef cows sold to 196p for a British Blue from W and S McCorf, Welton of Creuchies and £1660 for a Limousin from A and K Farming, Westwoodlane, while dairy types reached 132p and £1130 from WA Hume and Co, Easter Clune.

A pair of Limousin heifer calves from A and J Marshall, Mains of Struie, Forgandenny, topped the fortnightly sale of 22 calves at £320.

On Tuesday, the firm sold 1568 spring lambs, hoggs and cast sheep where 711 cross hoggs averaged 249.82p and sold to £142 for a Texel from D and J McKerrow, Nochnary, Freuchie, Fife and 297p for Texels from West Thomaston.

Blackface hoggs (611) cashed in at 211p and peaked at 236p from Drummond Estate and £113 from R and R Braes, Burnshot, while spring lambs from Allanfauld topped at £119 or 276p.

A smaller show of 254 cast ewes and tups saw heavy ewes average £107.47 and reach £160 for a Texel ewe from Nochnary.

Longtown

TRADE was slightly back on the week due to a poorer show for quality at C and D Auction Marts' sale of 3652 prime hoggs which averaged 227.9p per kg (-8p) with SQQs at 230.5p.

With many pens of good Beltex and Texels hitting 300p or more, top price was 321p for Beltex from Messrs Hepburn, North House, Hawick, and £151 for Texels from Ingleston.

Cast ewes and rams (3586) averaged £120.07 and peaked at £152 for heavy Texels from Chaseside, while cast rams reached £144 for Texels from Viewley.

The 26 prime cattle forward sold to 230p for a Limousin heifer from A and WJ Taylor and Son, Dashwell Green, while bullocks hit a top of 225p for a Limousin from D and E Lockhart, Faulding Cleugh. Top price per head at £1642.50 was paid for a British Blue heifer from Dashwell Green.

Cast cows sold to £735 for a Galloway from the Becks.

Stirling (UA)

SUFFOLKS from Abbey topped United Auctions' sale of 2600 old season lambs when they realised £130 and 255p per kg head.

New season lambs (10) peaked at £140 and 304p for Charollais from Langside.

Among the 972 cast ewes, Texels from Foodie made £158 while cast rams sold to £148 for Suffolks from Balmonth.

St Boswells

SOME 67 clean cattle sold through Harrison and Hetherington last week, where 20 bullocks averaged 220p per kg (+4p on the week) and 45 heifers levelled at 227p (-1p).

Heifers topped at 244p from Bee Edge, while bullocks realised 239p from Upper Nisbet. Top price per head at £1454.40 was an entry from Bee Edge.

The 10 cast cows forward averaged 141p and peaked at 194p from Willowford and £1147.98 from Hoselaw.

A rise of 28p on the week saw the 968 prime hoggs average 251p and reach £156 for Suffolks from Bonjedward and 300p for Beltex from Craiglea.

Suffolks from Bonjedward topped the 179 cast ewes at £137 to average £84.77, while heavy ewes averaged £99 and light ewes peaked at £53 for Cheviots from Bowmount, to average £50.

Ayr

ON Monday, Craig Wilson sold 2222 sheep comprising of 1791 prime hoggs and 431 cast tups and ewes.

Hoggs peaked at 328.6p for a pen of Beltex from M Stevenson, Balcaimie and £144 for a similar pen of heavyweights from the same home, to average 232.1p (+4.2p on the week).

Blackface hoggs topped at 257.5p for a pen from D Robertson, Craigdarroch, New Cumnock and £121 for a 50kg from IF Watson, Keyshill.

A plainer show of quality cast ewes was forward this week when heavy types reached £163 for a Texel from DM Walker and Son, Laigh Alticane, while Blackfaces hit a top of £80.50 from Mungo Hunter, Pennymore.

Cast tups peaked at £129.50 for a Texel from Cowgrove.

The firm sold 159 prime and cast cattle on Tuesday, where clean cattle maintained recent high rates. Top price was 244p paid for a Limousin bullock from Glendoune, while heifers peaked at 239p and £1398.15 for a Limousin from High Gameshill. The seven heifers forward cashed in at 235p or £1257.04.

Lanark

LAWRIE and Symington's weekly primestock sale on Monday saw the entry of 2159 hoggs average 232p per kg, with a top price of 330p per kg and £148.50 for 45kg Beltex from A Taylor, Heatheryhall Farm.

Cast ewes sold to £159.90 for Texels from Hartside, while cast rams peaked at £89 for Blackfaces from Wester Crosswoodhill.

Leading the prime cattle at 256p was a Limousin heifer from David Dickinson, Brockwoodlees, Canonbie. Butchers cattle averaged 246p.

Cast cows and bulls peaked at £1530 and 220p for a British Blue cross cow from Messrs Cockburn, Kingside Farm, Leadburn.

Carlisle

ALL classes of prime sheep met a flying trade at Harrison and Hetherington's sale on Monday, where 1624 hoggs averaged 249.36p per kg or £110.25.

The sale topped at £138.80 on four occasions, for two pens of Dutch Texel hoggs from Messrs Urwin, Hill House, Kirklinton and two pens from Messrs Hornsby, The Stackyard, Wigton.

Beltex hoggs topped the price per kg at 352.2p for a pen weighing 36kg from Messrs Little, The Guards, Ireby, while spring lambs reached £140 from Messrs Murray, Kirkland.

Cast ewes sold to £157.50 for Suffolks from JR Irving, Hilltop, Hawksdale.

A smaller entry of prime bullocks and heifers peaked at £1670 for a British Blue cross bullock from JC and D Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle and 239.5p for a Limousin bullock from High Aketon. Heifers reached £1207 and 226.5p for a British Blue from Greenhill.

Among the 144 cast cows, beef cows sold slightly less on the week, while black and white types were sharper.

Top price at 181.5p and £1698 was a British Blonde from Messrs Gibb, Jubilee Buildings.

Dingwall

JUST five prime heifers were forward for Dingwall and Highland Marts' sale on Tuesday which sold to 240p for a 565kg Limousin cross from Easter Strath of Auchterflow and £1362.30 from the same home. They averaged 236.3p (+14.1p).

The 1390 old season lambs cashed in at 225.5p (-7.6p) with 930 SQQs at 231.4p (-4.6p). They peaked at 294.3p and £128 for a pen of 43.5kg Beltex crosses from Torgorm, Conon Bridge, while 80 ewes and feeding sheep sold to £128 for a pen of Suffolk crosses from Docharty, Dingwall.

Wigton

PRIME hoggs met the dearest trade of the season at Hopes Auction Company's sale of 1085 this week, when they averaged 274.7p per kg or £118.10 with SQQs at 276.7p.

Topping the trade at £158 and 369p was a pen of 42kg Beltex from J Dixon and Sons, Lesson Hall, who also led the 19 ewes at £137 for a pen of Texels.

The 22 prime cattle peaked at 256.5p for a Limousin heifer from DA Harrison, Hill House, Adolth, while prime bulls sold to 205.5p for a Limousin from DI and LV Bowman, Lime Kiln Nook.

Castle Douglas

FORWARD at Wallets Marts' Castle Douglas centre on Tuesday, was 266 prime hoggs which averaged 232.87p per kg with only the best of hoggs selling sharper on the week.

Trade reached £134 for heavy Suffolks from Messrs McKinnel, Garrarie, Whithorn, and 316.2p for a pen of Beltex from Messrs MacTaggart, Craigview.

A plainer show of cast sheep peaked at £134 for Suffolk rams from Garrarie, while ewes sold to £115 for Texels from Valleyfield.
