Carlisle
AN entry of 371 store cattle sold to a good trade at Harrison and Hetherington, last week, where a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Metcalfe, Littlewater, topped at £1440. 
More Limousins, this time a pair from Messrs Batey, High Knells, headed up the bullock offering at £1355. 
A large show of 410 weaned calves welcomed extra buyers for bulls, with this section topping at £1050 for a run of Limousins from Messrs Birkett, Birk House. Limousins led the other sections at £990 for bullocks from Orton Hall and £970 for heifers from 3 Sewell Common. 
On Monday, H and H sold an offering of breeding sheep which averaged £70.31 per life, peaking at £98 per life for a two-shear Texel cross ewe with lambs from Messrs Jones, Ashcroft. A pen of two-shear Suffolk cross Texel ewes with twins from the same home achieved the top unit price of £288.

Dingwall
A QUALITY show of cattle met an excellent demand when Dingwall and Highland Marts sold 924 store cattle at a show of sale that was judged by MNH Mccallum, of Mountrich, Dingwall. 
Champion was a 585kg Limousin cross bullock from KDJ MacRae and Partners, Shawpark, which sold to Backmuir Livestock, Keith, for £1360. That price was matched by the reserve, a 570kg Limmy cross from A Macdonald, Easter Sheep Park, which was knocked down to MacIver Partners, Easter Strath of Auchterflow. 
With the champion leading the gross bullock trade, it was a 260kg Charolais cross from Balvullich, Muir of Ord which led the price per kg at 292.3p, with the 571 bullocks cashing in to average 240.3p. 
Charolais crosses led the heifer section as a 595kg heifer from The Cloy, Fortrose, topped the gross trade at £1580 while a 436kg heifer from Leys Estate, Inverness, realised 285.1p. The 348 heifers sold to average 231.3p. 
Cast cows (51) averaged 149.5p and sold to 200p for a Salers cross from Westfield Farm, Thurso, as well as £1450 for both a Charolais cross and an Aberdeen-Angus cross, both from Easter Sheep Park, Balblair.

Stirling (UA)
IT was Aberdeen-Angus bullocks that headed up United Auctions’ sale of 1153 store and native-bred cattle, last week, when a 460kg Angus stot from Balmirmer realised 284.8p per kg and a 592kg bullock from Muckraw made £1400. 
The 672 beef-bred bullocks levelled at 236.15p while 24 dairy-bred bullocks averaged 149.64p and sold to 200.5p from Kirkland and £860 from Netherton. 
Averaging 227.77p for 443, heifers reached 273.8p for a 294kg Charolais cross from West House and £1230 for a 588kg Limousin cross from Bencloich. 
Young bulls (14) sold to 225.5p for a Beef Shorthorn cross from Cockerston and £1170 for an Angus cross from Burnside of Balhadie. They averaged 201.6p. 
Cast cows met a strong trade as 118 beef types levelled at 153.92p and sold to 209.2p for a Limousin cross from Claylands as well as £1730 for a Charolais cross off Mid Cambushinnie. 
Claylands also topped the dairy cows at 151.2p with another from Easter Greenrigg at £995, as the 18 dairy cows averaged 123.23p.

St Boswells
AVERAGES improved on the year at Harrison and Hetherington’s sale of grazing cattle, last week, where all types were in high demand as bullocks levelled at 242p per kg (+9p on the year) or £995 per head (+£2), with heifers at 230p (+4p) or £897 (+£13). 
Bullocks topped the entry at £1245 for Limousins from Outerston and 302p per kg for Aberdeen-Angus from Swinnie Farming, while Charolais led the heifers at £1195 from Nether Howden and 270.9p from Stobswood. 
Also on offer was a selection of breeding sheep where Suffolk crosses from Hallrule topped at £78 per life for singles (£156 per unit) and £70 per life for twins (£210 per unit).

A MIXED show of 636 store cattle were easily sold and topped by Limousins from Rosshall at £1330 for a bull and £1275 for a heifer, at Craig Wilson, last week. 
Per kg, a pen of Aberdeen-Angus bullocks from Merrymouth hit 281.3p per kg and Limousin heifers from West Polquhirter realised 252.5p. 
The 321 beef-bred bullocks levelled at 228.7p or £962.30 with 35 Friesian bullocks at 154.1p or £759, having sold to £920 from KNockrevoch and 184.2p from Gabrockhill. 
Heifers (280) averaged 215.7p or £906.84.
The offering of store and breeding sheep saw 18 ewes with lambs reach £187 for a pen of one-crop Texel ewes with Charollais-sired twin lambs from J and L Barr, Bonnyton Moor, Eaglesham. 
The end of season show of 356 hoggs sold to £86 for a pen of Suffolks from Dumfries House Farms, followed at £85 for a pen of Texels off Messrs Wilson, Chapleton Farm.

Thainstone
A LIMOUSIN heifer weighing 342kg from Balgairn, Ballater, topped Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ sale of 1504 store cattle when she attracted the top price per kg of 330.4p. 
The 616 heifers, which averaged 234.2p (-2.2p on the week), also reached £1430 for a 698kg British Blue from Bridgeton, Muir of Fowlis. 
A pair of Aberdeen-Angus weighing 730kg from Wester Rora, Longside, headed up the gross trade at £1470 apiece, with a trio of 342kg Charolais from Sillerton, Auchterless, at 307p. The 872 bullocks averaged 241.7p (-2.1p). 
Young bulls (16) averaged 223.8p, peaking at 238.5p for a pen of three 348kg Charolais from West Quarter, Alyth, and £1020 for a 464kg Limousin from Glenlea, Lumphanan.
A show and sale of store cattle saw the champion, a 530kg Limousin cross heifer from Steven Smith and Rebecca Stuart, Bogie Street, Huntly, sell to the judges, David and Craig Buchan, Savoch, for £1400. 
The judges also bought the reserve for £1000. That was a 352kg Limousin cross bullock from G and J Greenlaw, Balgairn, Ballater. 
Best of the heifers not winning a trophy was a 400kg Limousin cross from M Coutts, Denhead, which sold to J Ingram and Son, Boghead, Pitcaple, for £1140. 
A 506kg Limmy bullock from A and L Cromarty, Hools, St Margaret’s Hope, was the best of the animals from the islands, and later sold to the Camerson, Burnside of Edingight, for £1240. 
Dearest of the cattle from the Orkney and Shetland isles, however, was a 648kg Angus cross bullock from How, Sanday, with bullocks also reaching 296p for a 358kg Limousin from Quoybelloch, Deerness. Heifers reached a top of 260p for a pair of 404kg Charolais from Braebuster, Deerness, and £1265 for a 506kg Limousin from Gorn, Shapinsay.
The entry of 1719 sheep saw store hoggs sell at extreme rates, with the 810 mainland hoggs reaching £100 for Beltex from Belnaboth, Glenkindie, while the 54 from the islands sold to £95.50 for Texels from South Breck, Burray. 
Texels from Ardlogie, Fyvie, headed up the 66 ewe hoggs at £106, and Texels with singles from Cairnton, Fordyce, led the 39 ewes with lambs at £74 per life. 
Feeding ewes and rams (750) sold to £148.50 for pure Suffolk ewes from both Adziel, Strichen, and Inchbruich, Cornhill.

Dumfries
A TOTAL of 124 organic and 214 non-organic cattle sold through C and D Auction Marts, on Monday, where averages were down slightly on the year due to the lack of fodder and reduced deadweight values. 
Organic bullocks welcomed the best of the trade as Charolais from Woolfords topped at £1275 and 301.4p per kg, as the 97 bullocks levelled at 269.8p. The 27 heifers, which averaged 224.2p, reached £1210 for Aberdeen-Angus from Outer Blair and 251p for British Blues from Upper Locharwoods. 
Conventional cattle sold to £1245 for Charolais bullocks from Marwhirn with more of the same from Skipmyre to 259p. The 118 beef-bred bullocks averaged 220.2p with 24 Holstein bullocks at 136.2p.

CALEDONIAN Marts welcomed the largest entry of store cattle since the new company was formed in 2015, when it sold 861 store and breeding cattle on Monday. 
A pre-sale show was judged by Andrew Morton jnr, of Lochend, who picked out a Blonde heifer from JM Campbell, Mannerston Holding, Linlithgow, as his champion which later made £1100. 
In reserve was a Limousin bullock from M Campbell, Glenstockadale Several, Stranraer, which made £1120. 
Of the pens of four, Limousin bullocks from AF Thomson, Lammerview, hit £1110 while heifers from Keirsbeath Farms, Crossgates, made £890. 
Overall, a top price per head of £1380 was paid for Simmental bullocks from Loanrigg, Slamannan, with bullocks also hitting 311p per kg for Limousins from Wester Whin, Slamannan. Beef-bred bullocks averaged 222p, while dairy bullocks reached 155p and £700 from Gryfeside, Kilmacolm. 
Levelling at 218p, heifers reached 303p for Simmies from Kilmeny, Isle of Islay, as well as £1210 for Aberdeen-Angus from Bowridge, Carluke. 
Young bulls sold to 256p for Charolais also from Kilmeny, as well as £960 from Greenwells, Falkirk. 
Also sold were 595 store and breeding hoggs where a pen of Cheviot ewe hoggs from James Fisher, Scoor, Isle of Mull, topped the breeders at £87 and store hoggs reached £80 for Texels from Pendreich as well as Suffolks from West Saline.

STORE hoggs met a flying trade and were well short of buyer requirements for a poorer quality on offer at C and D Auction Marts, on Tuesday. 
They peaked at £117 for Beltex hoggs from Downan, with Charollais to £113 from Lochwoodmains and hill types to £81 for Blackfaces from Clints Farming. 
A small opening sale of ewes with lambs reached £90 for correct below Suffolk ewes with singles from Oliver Park.
