TRADE was buoyant at Harrison and Hetherington's sale of 566 store cattle, where the best and smaller sorts were very dear and well bid for. 
They reached £1370 twice, first for a Limousin bullock from Nathan Donald, Lamonby Hall, and again for the Limousin heifer from Messrs Potts, Chapel House. Dairy-bred bullocks peaked at £1025 from Messrs Scott, Carrick Dean. 
There was a larger show of weaned calves that peaked at £1145 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Crichton, 4 Nether Locharwoods, Dumfries, with others to £1060 for Limousin bulls from Stubbsgill and £1015 for Limousin heifers from Wallhead. 
On Monday, the company sold a selection of ewes with lambs were a Texel cross gimmer with Beltex-sired lamb at foot from Messrs MacIntyre, Downan, Girvan, topped at £110 per life, with the run from Downan averaging £86.41 per life and £249.27 per unit.

Dingwall
STORE cattle met a steady trade and a quality show of breeding heifers sold well at Dingwall and Highland Marts, last week, where the 126 breeding heifers, including from Hi-Health herds, averaged 245.7p per kg. 
They were topped by Simmental crosses at 302.5p and £1400 for Simmental crosses weighing 433kg and 473kg, respectively, from Kinnahaird, Contin, with £1400 paid again for a pair of 630kg Simmy crosses from Smallburn Farms, Elgin. 
In the store ring, a pair of Simmental cross heifers from Torgorm, Conon Bridge, made 285.1p and £1220, as the 233 heifers levelled at 227.3p. Bullocks (246) averaged 240.7p, having peaked at 276.3p for a 380kg Charolais cross from 2 Lochend, Thurso, as well as £1260 for a 542kg Charolais cross from Shawpark, North Kessock. 
There were 19 prime and feeding cows which averaged 134.8p and sold to 166.1p for a Limousin cross from Croft Martin, Kingussie, and £1390 for another from Balculnaich, Nairn.

ABERDEEN-ANGUS crosses topped the gross trade at United Auctions' recent sale of 2080 store cattle and young bulls when a 592kg bullock from Victoria realised £1350 and a heifer weighing 544kg from Kinaldy made £1250. 
Per kg, a 272kg Limousin cross from Leoch led the bullocks at 275.7p and a 324kg Charolais cross from Kings Arms headed up the heifers at 262p. 
Dairy bullocks (43) averaged 145.2p having sold to 168.9p from Langhill and £1050 from Brandon, while young bulls (61) averaged 212.81p, and sold to 250p for a Limousin cross from Clatto and £1290 for an Angus cross from Dustyhall.
A good entry of 98 beef-bred cast cows levelled at 156.35p having been topped by Limousin crosses at 206p from Greenbank and £1550 from Chartershall. Averaging 95.21p, the seven dairy cows reached 106.6p and £695 from Kaimhill. 
The entry of 39 breeding cattle saw females reach £1800 for a Hereford cross heifer with Angus-sired bull calf from Nether Glinns, while the entry of store hoggs sold to £99 for Texels from Langbank.

THERE was a plainer show for quality at Craig Wilson's sale of 764 store cattle, where the 395 bullocks levelled at 231.8p per kg or £903.43, with 55 dairy bullocks at 146.5p or £603 and 314 heifers at 218.1p or £824.08. 
Leading the entry at £1310 was a pen of Aberdeen-Angus bullocks from Kirkland, with bullocks also leading the price per kg at 288.6p for a pen of six Limousins from Craigview (Arran). Dairy bullocks hit £820 from Barward and 159.8p from Midhouse. 
Heifers sold to £1295 for a Limousin from Gass (Straiton) as well as 247.4p for a pen of Limmies from Holehouse (Ochiltree).

CATTLE from Messrs Thomson, Caverton Mill, led Harrison and Hetherington's sale of store cattle, where strength and quality sold to a good trade as Charolais cross bullocks realised £1190 and a trio of Limousin cross heifers made 275p per kg. 
That 275p was matched by a Limousin cross bullock from Messrs Anderson, Headshaw, as heifers also reached £1135 for Charolais from Byrewalls. Bullocks cashed in to average 236.2p with heifers at 230p.
A pre-sale show was judged by Miss S Watt where the championship was awarded to Messrs Grieve, The Lee, and the reserve to West Garleton. 
Bullocks from Midburn led the Shorthorn section, which was judged by Messrs Gibson, Willowford.

A MIXED show for quality sold to a top of 304.3p per kg for a trio of Limousin cross bullocks weighing 322kg from Shenval, Ballindalloch, at Aberdeen and Northern Marts. 
Bullocks (834) also hit £1450 for a pair of 744kg Simmental crosses from Backhill of Seggat, Auchterless, and levelled at 236.8p. Heifers (831) averaged 223.4p, having peaked at 282.5p for a pen of three Limousins from Breckan Farm, Evie, and £1390 twice – for a 638kg Charolais from Housegarth, Quoyloo, and again for a 702kg Aberdeen-Angus from North Fornet, South Auchronie. 
Those heifers led the Orkney and Shetland offering, with bullocks from the islands reaching 278.3p for a 370kg Limousin from Maesquoy Farms, Harray, and £1370 for a 664kg British Shorthorn from Gremista, Lerwick.
The 24 young bulls sold to 238.5p for a pair of 390kg Limousin crosses from Barnhill, Laurencekirk, and £1040 for 460kg Charolais from Dykenook, Netherley. 
The sheep entry saw continental gimmers with twins from Plewlands, Duffus, top the 688 ewes with lambs at foot at £95 per life, while ewe hoggs (295) reached £115 for Texels from 31 Larel, Halkirk. 
The mainland entry of 1048 store hoggs reached £97.50 for Texels from 2 Ballochview, Grange, while the 102 store hoggs from the islands hit £93.50 for Texels from Annster, South Ronaldsay. 
Feeding ewes and rams (969) sold to £173.50 for pure Texels from Broadmyre, Clatt.

CRAIG Wilson sold 779 store and breeding cattle at its Fair Day sale, where stores were on average 34kg lighter on the year but despite the inclement weather, more buyers were forward. 
Averaging 230.4p per kg (against 233p last year), the 402 beef-bred bullocks sold to £1350 for Charolais crosses from J Drennan, Balgracie, as well as 260.7p for a Simmental cross from Messrs Fisher, Spittal. 
Dairy-bred bullocks (53) hit £845 from Messrs Cannon, Clauchrie, as well as 187p from A and K Dunlop, West Cairngarroch. They averaged 170.8p (against 166p). 
Among the heifers, a pen of six Limousin crosses from T Forsyth, Isle Farm, hit £1270, while a pen of the same from Balgracie made 258.8p. Heifers (244) averaged 220.2p (221.5p). 
Aberdeen-Angus from J McCaig, Barnultoch, topped the 75 young bulls, which averaged 220.2p, at £985 and 230p. 
Breeding cattle sold to £1160 for a pen of in-calf heifers from R Jamieson, Garrochtrie.

With 225 bullocks cashing in to average 244p, the 103 heifers levelled at 236p having been topped by British Blues at £1250 for a pair from Morris Leslie Partnership, Gairdrum, and 258p for a trio from the same home.

A GOOD selection of grazing-type cattle sold to a good turnout of mainland buyers at United Auctions' sale of 571 on Islay, where cattle from Tallant topped the price per kg at 297p for Aberdeen-Angus cross bullocks and 276p for Limousin cross heifers. 
Charolais cross heifers from Mansefield also made 276p and Coillabus sold Limousin cross heifers to £1100 as heifers cashed in to average 235.35p or £790.93, rises of 3.6p per kg or £13.34 per head on the year. 
Bullocks also hit £1180 for Simmental crosses from Island Farm and levelled at 246.17p or £916.60, increases of 4.34p or £44.07.

CALEDONIAN Marts sold 536 store cattle, on Monday, where cattle from Wester Whin, Slamannan, topped at 316p per kg for Limousin cross bullocks and 277p for Limousin cross heifers. 
Limousin heifers from Homesteads, Ardfern, also reached 277p as cattle from Glenwhilk, Doune, led the gross trade at £1450 for an Aberdeen-Angus bullock and £1380 for a heifer. 
Bullocks levelled at 227p with heifers at 214p. 
Also on offer were 329 sheep where Texel crosses and Mules from Stepend topped the ewes with lambs at foot at £120, and Suffolks form Shawbraes, Reston, topped the store hoggs at £78.

TOP quality cattle sold at recent rates while plainer types were easier at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' sale of 729 store cattle. 
Bullocks topped the trade at 274.3p per kg for a 288kg Limousin cross from Balmore, Dounreay (Gunn), as well as £1450 for Charolais cross bullocks weighing 703kg and 686kg from Brae Edge, Castletown. The 441 bullocks averaged 236.5p. 
Averaging 227.9p for 228, heifers were topped by Charolais crosses at 265.5p for one weighing from Newlands of Geise, Janetstown, and £1310 for one at 607kg from Buckies Farm, Thurso.

An entry of 393 ewes with lambs were well bid for, peaking at £98 per life for a pen of Texel cross hoggs with singles from Messrs Ramsay, Dockray Hall. Older ewes with lambs topped at £81 a life for a pen of correct Cheviot Mules with Texel-sired twins.

Lockerbie
AT a show and sale of store cattle at Harrison and Hetherington, a bullock from IT Goldie, Greenfields, claimed the championship before selling for £1140 while the reserve, a heifer from S Ewart and Son, Belridding, made £920. 
Selling for the top price of £1340 were Limousin heifers from S and L Dodd, Tundergarth, while bullocks peaked at £1240 from Messrs Wilson, Belzies.
Per kg, heifers hit 321.9p for a pen of four Aberdeen-Angus from LR Howatson, Corriemains, with bullocks to 286p for Limousins from Belridding.
