Dingwall
SOME 40 breeding cattle sold alongside Dingwall and Highland Marts’ sale of 22 pedigree bulls (see report on page 30), where a good selection met a keen demand. 
They sold to £2000 twice for Simmental cross heifers with male calves at foot from 4 and 5 Totescore, Kilmuir, while cows with calves hit £1780 for a Simmental cross with heifer calf from the same home. 
Bulling heifers (24) sold to £1100 for a Shorthorn cross from Todholes, Weydale, and in-calf cows (five) hit £1000 twice for Limousin crosses from 4 Liniclate, Benbecula.
All classes of the 1251 sheep on offer the following day met an excellent demand with the 981 store hoggs averaging £54.24, having sold to £106 for a pen of Texel crosses from 10 Earlish, Uig. 
Ewes (212) sold to £111 for a pen of Suffolks from Whitebog, Rosemarkie, while rams and feeding sheep (58) reached £124 for a Texel ram from Woodlands, Dingwall.

Carlisle
A PLAINER show of 706 store cattle sold to £1360 for a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Whitfield, Orton Rig, at Harrison and Hetherington's sale, while bullocks sold to £1315 for a British Blue cross from Messrs Watson, Howrigg. 
A couple of days later, a mixed show of cows and heifers with calves at foot met a better than expected trade selling to £2450 for a Limousin heifer with calf from Lower Langshaw.
Cows with calves hit £1900 for a British Blue from Home Farm. 
Bulling heifers commanded a strong trade, peaking at £1690 for Limousins from Low House. 
On Monday, H and H sold a larger show of ewes with lambs where quality units were well sought after but those with younger lambs were harder to cash. They reached £150 per life for a pen of Beltex cross ewes with Beltex-sired lambs at foot from Messrs Mulholland, Midtown, whose consignment also reached £140 and averaged £106.

Broughton
A LARGER show attracted several new buyers, resulting in a strong trade for all classes at Harrison and Hetherington’s April Fair show and sale of 400 store and breeding cattle. 
Cattle from A Hartley, Turner Hall, secured the champion and reserve tickets, as judged by Luke Ashford, Bedale. Champion was a Limousin cross heifer which later sold to Martin Wilcock, Wigan, for £1180 while the reserve, a Limousin bullock, sold to David Barker, Scarborough, for £1100. 
Cattle from Messrs Hoggarth, Far Kiln Bank, topped the trade at £1315 for a pair of Limousin cross Friesian bullocks with heifers to £1300 for a Limmy cross.

Stirling (UA)
UNITED Auctions sold 1867 store cattle and young bulls, last week, where the 867 bullocks levelled at 229.33p per kg, with 141 dairy bullocks at 169.97p and 840 heifers at 219.31p.
Limousin crosses headed up the price per kg at 289.5p for a 247kg bullock from Sorn Mains and 275.5p for a 392kg heifer from Easter Frew. Per head, a 626kg Charolais cross bullock from Nether Falla hit £1390 and a 660kg Aberdeen-Angus cross heifer from 5 Auchenkiln made £1340. 
Dairy bullocks sold to £990 for a Holstein cross from Woodend while 19 young bulls levelled at 186.42p having been topped by cattle from Drumoider at 197.7p for a Charolais cross and £780 for an Aberdeen-Angus cross. 
Drumoider also led the 172 beef-bred cast cows, which averaged 150.72p, with a Limmy cross at 226.4p while another from Middle Ballat made £1730. 
Averaging 117.69p, the 16 dairy cows hit 145.2p and £1130 from Traprain.
Also forward were 1019 store hoggs and breeding sheep, where Suffolks from Drumoider topped the stores at £98, and breeders hit £184 for Texel gimmers with twins from Easter Garden.

STORE cattle sold easier on the week at Craig Wilson’s sale of 509, where Charolais cattle topped most sections. 
They peaked at £1360 for a bullock from High Boydstone, with a bullock from Windyhall making 268.6p per kg and a heifer from the same home at 236.2p. Heifers also hit £1190 for a Simmental from Clevance to average 212.6p or £806.49 for 191. 
Bullocks (262) averaged 225.4p or £910.63, with 56 dairy bullocks at 156.5p or £652.59 having reached £930 from Fortacres and 172.9p from South Biggart. 
The sheep entry saw 63 ewes with lambs meet a buoyant trade selling to a top of £220 for a pen of Texel gimmers with Beltex-sired twins at foot from Hugh Dunlop, Holehouse. 
The 167 store hoggs reached £102 for a pen of Suffolks from Messrs Walker, Craigneil.

Huntly

LIMOUSIN crosses from Easter Corries, Botriphnie, topped United Auctions’ sale of 169 store and OTM cattle when a bullock and a heifer, both weighing 290kg, sold for 274.1p per kg and 262.15p, respectively. 
Limousin crosses also topped the gross section at £1205 for a bullock from Easter Newton, Lumphana, and £1180 for a 585kg heifer from Nethermills, Grange. 
In all, the 90 bullocks levelled at 232.1p with 70 heifers at 219p. 
Nine OTM cattle reached 174p and £1140 for a British Blue cross from Loanhead, Logie Coldstone.

Thainstone
A USEFUL show of good, natural grazers met a fast-selling trade at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ sale of 1428 store cattle which included an offering of organic cattle. 
The 43 organic bullocks averaged 243p per kg, having sold to 297.4p for a pen of five Charolais weighing 306kg from Auchmacleddie, Strichen, as well as £1295 for a 578kg Shorthorn from Upper Wheedlemont, Rhynie. 
Organic heifers (14) reached 241.9p and £1040 for a 430kg Aberdeen-Angus from Culfoichmore, Grantown on Spey, and averged 214p. 
The conventional section saw averages increase on the week as trade peaked at 306.4p for a pen of five Limousin cross bullocks weighing 346kg from Guise, Tough, with the 708 bullocks, which averaged 244.4p, also hitting £1530 for a pair of 598kg Charolais crosses from Stoneyhill, Longhave, 
Heifers (656) averaged 229.6p (+6.2p), having sold to 274.1p for a 394kg Charolais from Burnton, Laurencekirk, and £1340 gross for a 638kg Aberdeen-Angus from Goval Cottage, Rothienorman. 
Cattle from the Orkney and Shetland isles saw Limousins from Quoybelloch, Deerness, top the price per kg at 274.7p for a 364kg bullocks and 252.5p for a 396kg heifer. Per head, cattle from Diamonds, Deerness, led at £1350 for a 558kg Limmy bullock and £1190 for a 524kg Simmental heifer. 
Ewes with lambs at foot were keenly bid for and in short supply as 720 sold to £82 per life for Texel ewes with twins from Bogiefeulach, Tornaveen. 
Grit ewes (27) hit £106 for Texel gimmers from Haquoy, Shapinsay, and ewe hoggs (38) sold to £100 for Texels from Gleneffock, Glenesk. 
Texels from Broomhill, Rickarton, topped the 390 store hoggs at £120, while the 257 hoggs from the islands sold to £97.50 for Suffolks from Bigton Farm, Bigton. 
Feeding sheep (715) sold to £157.50 for continental rams from Delnabo, Glengairn.

A TOTAL of 68 store and 14 OTM cattle sold through Dingwall and Highland Marts’ Lochmaddy centre, on Monday, where 30 bullocks averaged 222.5p per kg with 38 heifers at 209.6p. 
They reached 262.7p for a 335kg Limousin cross bullock from 4 Tigharry, Lochmaddy, with Charolais cross bullocks weighing 735kg and 740kg from 50 Balgarva, Fochar, topping the gross trade at £1200 apiece.
Limousin crosses from Dunskellar, Sollas, headed up the heifer offering at 240p for a 300kg pair and £1000 for another weighing 510kg. 
Levelling at 119p, OTM cattle reached 146.7p for a Luing cross from 14 Hougharry, Lochmaddy, as well as £1300 for a Simmental cross from 4 Tigharry. 
Also forward was a selection of store sheep which saw 25 hoggs average £34.60 having sold to £45 for a pen of crosses from Crois Morag, Clachan, Lochmaddy. 
The 94 ewes averaged £41.69, having peaked at £80 for a pen of crosses from 18 Illeray, Baleshare, Lochmaddy, while the eight feeding sheep were topped at £72 by Suffolk rams from Trumisdarry, Lochmaddy.

Longtown
TRADE remained strong for store hoggs at C and D Auction Marts, where 1090 sold to £116 for Beltex from Craigshield. 
A large entry of 482 ewes with lambs met an increased demand and was especially dear for ewes with strong lambs, peaking at £95 per life three times. This was paid for a correct below Texel cross ewe with single Texel-sired lamb from Brian and Sandra Johnstone, Nelson Hill, as well as for two lots for Texel cross hoggs with lambs from Messrs Ramsay, Dockray Hall. 
In the store cattle ring, a buoyant trade was met for the 68 on offer which peaked at £1180 for a Limousin heifer from GW Dinnin, Nether Albie, with bullocks to £975 for a dairy-bred British Blue from AI and V Smith, Westwinds.

WALLETS Marts welcomed the largest entry of store cattle seen in recent times on Monday when 1300 went under the hammer, selling to a large attendance of Aberdeenshire and English buyers. As a result, bullocks averaged 238.7p per kg (+9p on the previous sale) with heifers at 230p (+7p). 
The sale peaked at £1370 for a pen of Limousin cross bullocks from GB Milroy, Mains of Machermore, with bullocks also reaching 295.9p for Charolais crosses from A McCornick and Co, Barnbackle. 
Heifers reached £1170 for a Simmental from W and A McWhirter, Kenmure, as well as a Hereford from Trolane. Per kg, they sold to 281.7p for a pen of Charolais crosses from WJ Davidson, Poldean. 
A small show of OTM cattle reached £1294.38 for a British Blue cross from Trolane and 177p for a Limousin from Farhills, Auchencairn.
