Carlisle
A PLAINER show of 549 store cattle met a brisk trade at Harrison and Hetherington's sale last week, peaking at £1285 on two occasions for Limousin bullocks from Messrs Weal, Birkshawhead, Kirkpatrick Fleming. 
Heifers reached £1280 for a Limousin from Messrs Wales, Thackwood, Raughton Head, with dairy types to £945 for Friesian bullocks from Messrs Moscrop, Rye Close. 
On Monday, a larger entry of ewes with lambs met a decent trade throughout. 
They sold to £124 per life for a pen of Blue Texel gimmers with lambs at foot from Messrs Hodgson, Spring Hill, Aldoth. 
Hoggs with lambs sold to £108 for a Texel outfit from Braithwaite Shields, while ewes with lambs realised £116 from Langfauld.

A CHAROLAIS cross bullock weighing 278kg from Westerhall topped the pence per kg section at United Auctions’ sale of 1765 store cattle, last week, when it sold for 298.3p. 
Bullocks also reached £1250 for a 532kg Charolais cross from Craigton, while heifers peaked at 287.9p for a 330kg Limousin cross from Townhead and £1300 for a 708kg Simmental cross from Harehead. 
In all, 842 bullocks cashed in to average 163.2p, while 897 heifers levelled at 226.9p. 
Dairy-bred bullocks (26) averaged 163.2p and sold to 197.3p and £1115 for a 565kg Holstein cross from Claylands.
Of the cast cows forward, 87 beef cows levelled at 145p having sold to 197p for a Charolais cross from Hattrick Farms and £1470 for a Limousin cross from Borlick, while 28 dairy cows averaged 106.3p and peaked at 125.6p and £925 for a Holstein Friesian cross from Claylands. 
Also forward were 331 store and breeding sheep which saw store hoggs reach £86 for Texels from Hill, and ewes with lambs at foot peak at £168 twice for a Cheviot ewe with twin lambs and for a Suffolk ewe with twin lambs, all from Lochend.

A USEFUL show of cattle met a sound trade at United Auctions’ sale of 390 store and OTM cattle, where 232 bullocks averaged 238.3p per kg and 148 heifers levelled at 243.9p. 
Simmental heifers from Connachie Farm, Kellas, topped the section when a 460kg entry made 315.2p and another sold for £1700. 
Bullocks reached 285.7p for a Charolais cross from Raws Farm, Dufftown, while a Simmental cross from Newtonbrae, Newmill, made £1260. 
OTM cattle (10) sold to a top of 168.4p for a British Blue cross from Auchenbreddie, Insch, and £1360 for a Simmental cross from Auchorties Farm, Keith.
Among the sheep, 759 ewes with lambs at foot met a strong trade when they sold to £81 per life for Texel ewes with Suffolk lambs from Home Farm Glenbarry, Banff.

The 284 store hoggs reached £84 for a pen of Cheviots from 6 Aird, Ardvasar, while 105 ewes sold to £105 for a pen of Cheviots from 1 Milltown, Applecross. 
A pair of Cheviot wedders from An Grianan, Cannich, topped the 17 rams and feeding sheep at £60.

BETTER quality grazing cattle sold well and kept with current mainland levels at United Auctions’ sale of 74 store cattle and 233 store sheep on Tiree. 
While plainer sorts were harder to cash, bullocks reached £1060 for a British Blue cross from Garaphail and 240p per kg for a Limousin cross from Sandaig. 
Heifers sold to £980 for an Aberdeen-Angus cross from Hillcrest and 234p for a Limousin cross from Sandaig. 
Cast cows peaked at £1290 for a Limousin cross from Vaul. 
All classes of sheep were keenly bid for as hoggs reached £132 for Beltex crosses from Heylipol and ewes sold to £111 twice for Beltex crosses and Texel crosses from the same home.

Craig Wilson sold 793 store cattle at Ayr, where 386 bullocks averaged 233.7p per kg or £938.86 and 368 heifers cashed in at 223.4p or £830.99. 
Top price per head was £1435 for a Limousin bullock from Netherton Dalrymple, while a similar pen from Maxwelston made 281.5p. 
Heifers realised £1240 for Limousins from Netherton, while Aberdeen-Angus crosses from Mountop sold for 251.9p. 
Friesian bullocks were topped at £800 and 160.6p for a pen from Stevenston.
A larger show of 226 store and breeding sheep sold similar on the week when they peaked at £225 for a pen of five Texel gimmers with Beltex lambs at foot from H Dunlop, Holehouse, Ochiltree. 
Suffolk hoggs from Messrs Walker, Craigneil, topped the store hoggs at £70.

STORE cattle met a brisk trade throughout at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ sale of 2293 head at Thainstone last week, where 1059 bullocks averaged 239.5p per kg and 1018 heifers levelled at 225.9p. 
Bullocks topped both the pence per kg and gross sections when a pair of 342kg Charolais crosses from Harestone, Crathes, made 336.3p and two 660kg Aberdeen-Angus' from Skeibhill, Aberchirder, sold for £1440. 
A 378kg Limousin cross from Newton Cottage, Acharachle, came out tops amongst the heifers at 322.8p, while a Simmental heifer weighing 504kg from Cairntack, Belhelvie, made £1420. 
Young bulls (15) peaked at 302.4p for a 248kg from Shorthorn cross from Cairntack, Belhelvie, and £1190 for a 556kg Aberdeen-Angus from Silvercross, Barthol, Chapel. 
An entry of 198 BVD virus free and vaccinated heifers met an excellent demand when they averaged 269.9p (+4.2p). They sold to 365p for a pen of four 452kg Simmental crosses from Pitgaveny, Elgin, and £2050 for a pair of 568kg Simmentals from Berryleys, Grange. 
Ewes with lambs at foot (1695) met an excellent demand when selling to a large ring side of buyers, peaking at £93 for three-year-old Texels with singles from Plewlands, Duffus. 
Store hoggs (255) sold to £91.50 for Cheviots from Glenfinnan, Findon, and feeding ewes and rams (701) sold to £149 for pure Suffolks from Milton of Birness, Ellon.

UNITED Auctions held its annual May sale of store cattle and sheep at its Dalmally centre, last Saturday, where bullocks averaged 249.19p per kg and heifers levelled at 235.5p. 
Bullocks sold to a top price of £1040 for Charolais crosses from Auchlyne, and 318p for Simmental crosses from the Brough.
Heifers peaked at £1100 for Hereford cross from Clachan, Tiree, and 294p for similarly bred entries from Keilator. 
Among the breeding cattle, an in-calf Limousin cross heifer from Dallachulish made £960.

SOME 151 store cattle sold through Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ Quoybrae centre, on Monday, where 74 bullocks averaged 232.5p per kg and 77 heifers levelled at 227p.
Bullocks led the trade when a pen of six 294kg Simmental crosses from Durran Mains, Castletown, made 299p and a 784kg Charolais cross from Gillock Mains, Watten, sold for £1300. 
Heifers peaked at 281.6p for six 293kg Charolais crosses from Nottingham Mains, Latheron and £1230 for a 582kg Limousin cross from Buldoo, Dounreay. 
Continentals from The Smithy, Haster, Wick, led the 98 old season store lambs at £91 per life, while 143 feeding ewes and rams sold to £110 for Suffolks from Curlew, Mybster.
