DEMAND for all types of cattle continues to grow at Harrison and Hetherington, where 310 store cattle sold to an increased number of buyers and met a flying trade throughout to top at £1345 for a Limousin cross bullock from Le Grice and Son, Newtown, Carlisle.

Heifers reached £1335 for a Limousin from Messrs Priestley, Cracrop, Brampton, while dairy sorts peaked at £1310 for two British Blue crosses from Messrs Hutchinson, Carlatton Demesne, Heads Nook.

Limousin crosses headed up all sections of the 382 weaned calves as bulls reached £1100 from Messrs Oliver and Son, Walton Woodhead, with heifers to £1090 from Messrs Maughan, Asby Mill, and bullocks to £1040 from Messrs Dupuy, High Burnfoot.

AT United Auctions' sale of 243 breeding cattle, last week, it was a continental heifer with bull calf at foot from Derrie that topped the entry at £2500.

Cows reached £2450 for a Limousin cross with heifer calf from Nether Glinns, while bulling heifers sold to a top of £1110 for an Aberdeen-Angus cross from Meikle Camoquhill.

Also on offer were 402 store and native-bred cattle as well as young bulls, where Charolais crosses from Wester Clunie topped the gross trade at £1400 for a 626kg bullock and £1320 for a 588kg heifer.

Per kg, a 386kg Aberdeen-Angus cross bullock from Boydston topped at 282.4p as 170 bullocks averaged 233.6p, while heifers reached 234.1p for a 378kg Charolais cross from Gardrum and averaged 208.1p for 170.

Levelling at 160.84p, the 13 dairy-bred bullocks sold to 185.2p and £965 from Broompark, while 49 young bulls averaged 198.65p having peaked at 247p for a Limousin cross form Walton and £1080 for a Simmental cross from Inceoch.

Selling to average 152.5p, the 135 beef-bred cast cows reached 211.7p for a Limousin cross from Gateside and £1670 for a Charolais cross from Balmyle. The 13 dairy cows averaged 122.38p and hit tops of 154.6p for a Montbeliarde cross from Knockeffrick and £1230 for a Holstein cross form Cauldcoats.

IT was Aberdeen-Angus cross bullocks that topped Harrison and Hetherington's mixed show of store cattle when a pen from Messrs Howey, Broomiebank, hit £1120 and a pen from Messrs Fleming, Falnash, realised 280p per kg.

Limousins led the heifer entry at 251.7p from Falnash and £1115 from Inland Pastures as heifers levelled at 224.9p with bullocks at 224.4p.

At the last sale of ewes with lambs of the season, Texel gimmers with singles from Roseview topped at £78.

Huntly

A SMALL offering of 67 store and OTM cattle sold through United Auctions's Huntly centre, last week, where the store cattle entry was topped by Simmental crosses from East Brae, Grange.

They reached 276.7p per kg for 300kg bullocks with heifers to 240.6p for a 320kg heifer. The 19 bullocks averaged 240.7p with 25 heifers at 220p.

Averaging 149.6p, the 23 OTM cattle reached 181.4p for a Limousin cross from Easterton, Old Rayne, and £1490 for a Simmental cross from Corskie, Garmouth.

Ayr

TRADE was firm at Craig Wilson's sale of 243 store cattle, where 102 bullocks averaged 235.1p per kg or £894.56 with 11 Friesian bullocks at 169.1p or £734.55 and 130 heifers at 227.1p or £811.42.

Leading the entry at 270p was a pen of Limousin bullocks form Back o' Hill while a Charolais bullock from Louise and Alice Allan, Arnsow, topped the gross trade at £1490.

Heifers also to 246.3p and £1260 for Limousins from Auchentibbert, Sandhead, while dairy bullocks hit 181.9p and £1055 from Catcraig.

At the end-of-season sale of 130 breeding sheep, all classes met a similar trade to the previous sale to top at £187 for a pen of Mule hoggs with Blue Texel-sired singles from Messrs Campbell, Craigalbert.

STORE cattle sold to a top of 258.6p per kg for a Blonde bullock weighing 406kg from Braeside at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' sale of 272 store cattle, last week.

The 131 bullocks also topped the gross trade at £1480 for a trio of Simmental crosses weighing 676kg from Netherton, Glenlivet.

Heifers (110) sold to 229.4p per kg for a 218kg Limousin cross from Pittenkerrie, Glassel, and £1320 for a 696kg Aberdeen-Angus from Clinterty Grange, Kinellar.

A 438kg Simmental cross from Netherton topped the 21 young bulls at 200.9p with a 550kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Overhall, Premnay, at £1060.

Also on offer were 1104 sheep of all classes where two-crop continental ewes with twins from Mains of Asloun, Alford, topped the 132 breeding sheep at £80.

Store hogg (119) sold to £68 for Cheviots from Headtown of Ord, Cornhill, and feeding sheep (853) peaked at £147 for pure Suffolks from Mid Mains of Balfour, Fettercairn.

NUMBERS are starting to fall but trade is getting stronger for store cattle at Darlington Farmers' Auction Mart, on Monday, where a young bull from C Moffett topped the entry at £1210.

The 137 store cattle saw bullocks reached £1185 for bullocks from DW Dresser with heifers to £1115 from WB Rutter and Sons.

A good cast cattle trade continued as 88 cast cows averaged 145p per kg or £872, having peaked at 206p for a Limousin from B and J Bainbridge as well as £1657 for a Charolais from D and JS Gargett.

A SMALL offering of 16 breeding cattle at Lawrie and Symington sold to a top of £1150 for an Aberdeen-Angus cow with Angus-sired stot calf at foot from Knockbarry.

The entry of 59 store cattle saw cattle from D Smeaton, Scronely, top the gross trade at £1185 for a 550kg Limousin cross bullock and £1070 for a 525kg Shorthorn heifer.

Per kg, heifers reached 269p for a 160kg Charolais cross from Burnside Farms with bullocks to 247p for a 340kg Simmental cross from the Firm of DJ Smith, Cranley.

In all, the 30 bullocks averaged 228p with 21 heifers at 220p.

Young bulls (eight) reached £690 and 279p for a pen of Charolais crossed from Burnside Farms, and averaged 229p.

Longtown

A MUCH larger show of 642 ewes with lambs welcomed many new buyers at C and D Auction Marts' Longtown centre, on Tuesday, where a top of £102 per life was paid for a pair of Beltex cross ewes with single tup lambs from Mrs Mary Dunlop, Corstane, Broughton, whose consignment of 86 lives from Corstane averaged £79.69.

This was followed at £100 per life for a large pen of Texel cross ewes with Texel-sired twins from Messrs Browell, Quarry House, whose run averaged £88.19 for 91 lives.

The sale included a consignment of Texel cross and Cheviot Mule hoggs from RH Muir, Low Stanley, which peaked at £87 per life and averaged £74.17 for 156 lives, a rise of £8 on the year.

The entry of 46 store cattle peaked at £1050 for a Limousin bullock from AJ Raine, Hazelgill, with heifers to £990 for Limousins from D Story, Greenburn.
