Harrison and Hetherington had forward 1285 head of cattle at their weekly Wednesday Sale, consisting of 841 store cattle, store bulls and stirks, 229 calves and 215 dairy cattle.

Topping the store cattle sale were TT and JE Mason, Bank Farm, Unthank, with two Limousin cross bullocks which sold at £1300 each.

Heifers sold to £1265 for an Aberdeen-Angus from J and D Glendinning, Bridge End, Annan.

An entry of 300 hoggs were forward on Monday and were met by a good trade throughout. Topping the sale was a pen of Dutch Texels selling for £78.50 from TP Wigham, Hargill House. Beltex topped at £72 for a pen from D Boyes, Howgate. Mules met a good enquiry, selling to £65 for a pen of 26 from Messrs Marrs, Manor Farm.

Last Wednesday, United Auctions sold 1960 store cattle including the Aberfeldy show and sale as well as 148 cast cows and 1484 store and breeding sheep.

The 1088 bullocks (1088) averaged 223.35p and sold to 326.40p per kg for a 386kg Limousin cross from Newton of Logierait, and to £1340 for a 718kg Sim cross from Wolfhill.

The 63 dairy bullocks averaged 166.41p, selling to 194.30p per kg for a 494kg Montbeliarde from Meikle Camoquhill, and to £1030 for a 538kg Montbeliarde cross from Meikle Camoquhill.

There were 809 heifers which averaged 217.28p and sold to 272.90p per kg for a 513kg Limousin cross from Ballechin, and to £1400 for a 513kg Limousin from Ballechin.

Beef Cows (131) averaged 120.41p, selling to 168.10p per kg for a Aberdeen-Angus cross from Craigowmill, and to £1350 for a Limousin cross from Ballechin.

The Aberfeldy show saw the championship go to a 512kg heifer from J Robertson and Co, Newton of Logierait which later sold for £1380.

The reserve, a bullock from Pittentian Farming Partnership, 500kg £1280.

Champion pen of four were bullocks from J Robertson and Co, Newton of Logierait. Weighing 428kg, they sold at £1120.

On Monday, Penrith and District Farmers’ Mart held their fortnightly sale of 250 store cattle, when a dearer trade was witnessed, with all classes very good to sell to a complete ringside of buyers. Topping the sale at £1305 was a pen of 21-month-old British Blue cross Hereford bullocks from A and S Robley, Nelson Hill.

The majority of the heifers would be dairy bred, topping at £1165 for a Limousin from E Hird, Park Head, Welton.

Caledonian Marts had forward 473 store cattle and 34 breeding cattle, with a large variety of cattle forward to suit our large ringside of buyers.

Bullocks averaged 205p per kg selling to 245p for a pen of Charolais from Gilmour Farms, New Peninver, Campbeltown, and to £1120 for a Limousin from A Morton, Lochend, Denny. Heifers averaged 197p per kg selling to 222p for a Limousin from D and L Graham, Mains of Burnbank, Blairdrummond, and to £1120 from the same home. Black and whites sold to 150p from R Rodger, Knockraich, and to £730 from the same home.

Also forward were 763 store hoggs, feeding and breeding ewes. All classes of hoggs were slightly dearer with breeding sheep a similar trade.

Top price of the day went to D McVicar, Lephinchapel, for a pen of Beltex at £90. In the breeding section, grit ewes sold to £102 for Texels scanned with triplets from WS McCord, Treetops, Methven.
