STORE lambs met a very keen demand, as did breeding sheep, at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ recent sale of 5036 store sheep.
Texels from Seattersquoy, Stenness, led the 1104 island store lambs at £71.50 with the mainland sale of 1979 store lambs hitting £70 for Suffolks from Prony, Ballater.
Texels from Feolquoy, Evie, topped the 89 ewe lambs at £124 and other breeding sheep (836) hit £145 for continental gimmers from Corshelloch, Glenlivet, with the 92 breeding rams to £680 for a Bluefaced Leicester shearling from West Mains Nethermuir, Maud.
A few days later the firm sold 1711 store cattle where a 220kg Limousin bullock from The Orchard Home Farm, Fintray, topped at 313.6p per kg with a pen of 708kg Limousin cross bullocks from Doonby, Westside, at £1420.
Heifers peaked at 275p for a 280kg Limmy cross from Hilton, Cammachmore, and £1320 for pen of 636kg Limousin crosses from Backhills, Corse.
Overall, the 1043 bullocks levelled at 211.2p (+1.9p on the week) and the 655 heifers averaged 208.5p (+3.1p).

CHAROLAIS crosses from Obbe Road, Isle of Harris, led the weaned calf trade at Dingwall and Highland Marts, last week, when a 240kg bullock realised 295.8p per kg and a pair of 225kg heifers made 268.9p.
Per head, a 420kg Limousin cross bullock from Coldholme, Fortrose, sold for £930 and a 365kg Simmental cross heifer from Guisachan, Tomich, made £845. In all, the 213 bullock calves averaged 235.4p and the 131 heifer calves levelled at 217p.
Among the store cattle, the 58 bullocks averaged 198.6p with 39 heifers at 188.7p.
The following day the firm sold 6518 breeding and feeding sheep where Cheviot females met the dearest trade experienced at the centre and hit a top of £170 for Cheviot gimmers from Dukeston of Brux, Alford.
The 907 gimmers levelled at £100.57 while 4549 breeding ewes averaged £69.85 and sold to £160 for Cheviots from Tister, Halkirk.
Rams (34) peaked at £320 for a Cheviot from 12 Bualnaluib, Aultbea, and the 238 lambs sold to £60 for Cheviots from The Poplars.

On Monday some 393 breeding cattle were forward, where in-calf heifers sold at highly satisfactory rates.
A top of £3900 was paid for a Limousin cross heifer with male calf at foot from Kirksheaf, Tain, while cows and calves hit £2300 for a Limmy cross with a July-born British Blue-sired calf from the reduction from Slattadale, Achnasheen.
In-calf females peaked at £2400 three times – for Simmental cross and Charolais cross heifers from Folly, Thurso, and again for a Blue cross from Upper Duntulm, Kilmuir – and bulling heifers sold to £1700 for a Simmy cross from 149/250 Little Rogart, Rogart.

A MIXED selection in all departments met a sound trade at Harrison and Hetherington’s sale of 558 store cattle and 362 weaned calves last week.
British Blues from JR Wilkinson, Carlatton Mill, Brampton, led the store trade at £1300 for a bullock and £1280 for a heifer.
Weaned calves peaked at £1080 for a Limousin bull from Wardhall Gaurds with heifers to £1030 twice for Limousins from Glenlea and bullocks to £970 for Charolais from Temple House.

ALL classes of store cattle sold sharper on the week when Craig Wilson sold 119 bullocks to average 204.8p per kg or £812.80 with 25 dairy bullocks at 135.6p or £656.84 and 113 heifers at 195.8p or £800.04.
Leading the entry at 254.8p was a pen of Salers cross bullocks from Lenamhor, Arran, with bullocks also hitting £1255 for Limousins from Dykefield.
Limousins led the heifer section at 224.7p for a pen from Baltersan and £1100 for a pair from Knockgerra.
Also forward were 1098 store lambs which saw good quality lambs sell sharper on the week. They averaged £43.81 (including 603 Blackfaces) and sold to £63 for a pen of Texels from Auchenhew, Arran.
On Tuesday, Craig Wilson had forward 110 breeding cattle, where heifers and calves (52) averaged £1770.21 and sold to £2700 for a Limousin and bull calf from High Barness.
In-calf heifers (27) averaged £1225.56 and sold to £1550 for a Limousin from High Barness.
A Limousin heifer from Gateside lead the bulling heifers (16) at £1093.13, while cows and calves (10) sold to £1850 from Barleith.

Clach Farms, Duachy, Kilninver, led the suckled calf trade at 278p per kg and £960 for a heifer while bullocks hit 319p and £720 from the Firm of Ardencaple and Scammadale. Heifer calves averaged 231p with bullocks at 217p.
Averaging £889, in-calf heifers peaked at £1850 for a Simmental from I MacColl, Mid Farm, Isle of Lismore, while bulling heifers levelled at £725.79 and sold to £950 from MD and SA Clarke, Williamwood, Lockerbie.

A LARGE entry of 2528 cattle sold through United Auctions last week.
Selling for the top price of 236.8p per kg was a 359kg Limousin cross bullock from Newton of Logierait, with the 1287 bullocks (which averaged 214.82p) also selling to £1280 for a 620kg Limousin cross from Compestonend. The 245 dairy bullocks averaged 129.34p and sold to 163.3p and £950 for Friesian crosses from Kirkland and Ormiston Mains, respectively.
Heifers (900) levelled at 199.02p and sold to 232.2p for a 379kg Limmy cross from Compestonend and £1190 for a 586kg Charolais cross from High Glentriplock.
Averaging 195.63p, the 96 young bulls were topped by Simmentals at 278.4p from Drumgrange and £1160 from Innerwick.
The 260-strong entry of cast cows saw 225 beef types average 100.56p and sell to 167.7p for a Limousin cross from Pyeston and £1470 for a Charolais cross from Mid Cambushinie, while 35 dairy cows averaged 69.51p and sold to 107.7p and £745 from Broughmore.

HARRISON and Hetherington held its annual two-day sale of Blue Grey cattle at Newcastleton, last week, where breeding cattle on the first day hit £2000 for four in-calf heifers from Farney Shields, Hexham.
In-calf heifers reached £1580 from Hedgley Farms, Alnwick, and bulling heifers sold to a joint top of £1400 – first for a pen of five from Barlaes, Castle Douglas, and again for a pen of eight from High Thorneyburn, Hexham.
The overall average for Blue Grey heifers, from suckled calves to in-calf heifers, was £990.40, with the highest average of £1712 for five going to Hownam Grange.
On day two, the calf sale peaked at £1000 for a Limousin cross bullock from Messrs Osborne, Park Head, Carlisle, with heifers to £925 for four Limousin crosses from Haining House, Brampton.

St Boswells
THERE was a large entry of 870 store cattle and suckled calves sold through Harrison and Hetherington, last week, where a Limousin store bullock from Messrs Hepburn, Northhouse, topped the trade at £1180.
Calves reached £1030 for a Limousin stot from Messrs Graham, Orchard, and 281.4p per kg for a Charolais bullock from Messrs Anderson, Headshaw L.
Heifer calves sold to 283p for a pen of Charolais from Messrs Morton, Kaeside.
Overall averages saw bullocks level at 224.39p with heifers at 208.79p, while calves aged one to six months peaked at 239p for bullocks and 250p for heifers. Those aged seven to 10 months sold to 228p for bullocks and 222p for heifers.
Also on offer was a show of breeding cattle which met a high demand throughout. Topping at £5000 twice were pure Aberdeen-Angus cows with calves at foot from Messrs Purcell, Rosedale.

UNITED Auctions sold 554 cattle on Tiree, last week, where averages dropped slightly on the year as bullocks levelled at £680.90 or 218.58p per kg (-£7.45 or  +5.2p on the year) with heifers at £589 or 203.87p (-£30.34 or - 3.85p).
Limousin crosses led most sections at 334p for heifers from Mannal; 286p for bullocks from 10 Balevullin and Ruaig; £1130 for bullocks from Whitehouse (D Hayes); and £1110 for heifers from Heylipol.
In the breeding section, Salers bulling heifers from Drumaglea topped at £1300 and cast cows reached £970 for Limousin crosses from Parkhouse.

Breeding sheep (53) were topped at £200 by shearling rams – for a Cheviot from Achscrabster and again for a Suffolk from Nipster, Watten – and the 90 ewe lambs levelled at £46.37 having peaked at £71.50 for Texels from Lower Reiss Farms.
The 54 prime lambs hit 153.8p for three 41.6kg Texels from Myrelandhorn (Mccarthy) and £65.50 for 19 Suffolks weighing 43.2kg from Achscrabster.

Heifers also reached £1160 for an Aberdeen-Angus from Addieswell, West Calder, with the same home leading the gross trade at £1200 for an Angus bullock. Otherwise, bullocks reached 246p for a Limousin from Mains of Burnbank, Blairdrummond, and averaged 201p while heifers levelled at 194p.
Dairy bullocks averaged 136p and reached 150p from Macrindleston, Girvan, and £780 from Bonnyhill, Bonnybridge.

Quoybrae
ABERDEEN and Northern Marts sold 1729 store, prime and breeding sheep at Quoybrae, on Monday, where the 1336 store lambs averaged £51.74 and sold to £69.50 for Suffolks from Hillside, Auckengill.
Breeding sheep (53) were topped at £200 by shearling rams – for a Cheviot from Achscrabster and again for a Suffolk from Nipster, Watten – and the 90 ewe lambs levelled at £46.37 having peaked at £71.50 for Texels from Lower Reiss Farms.
The 54 prime lambs hit 153.8p for three 41.6kg Texels from Myrelandhorn (Mccarthy) and £65.50 for 19 Suffolks weighing 43.2kg from Achscrabster.
Feeding ewes and rams (196) averaged £48.80 and sold to £79 for Texels from Clachan, Mid-Clyth.

ALL store classes sold well at Lockerbie on Tuesday, where a Charolais bullock from Craigielandshill, Moffatt, sold to £950, while a Limousin heifer from Harlawhill, Canonbie, sold for £910.

Stirling (Cal)
CALEDONIAN Marts sold 635 store cattle to a top of 264p per kg for a Charolais heifer from West Carse, Gargunnock, at Stirling on Mondaay.
Heifers also reached £1160 for an Aberdeen-Angus from Addieswell, West Calder, with the same home leading the gross trade at £1200 for an Angus bullock. Otherwise, bullocks reached 246p for a Limousin from Mains of Burnbank, Blairdrummond, and averaged 201p while heifers levelled at 194p.
Dairy bullocks averaged 136p and reached 150p from Macrindleston, Girvan, and £780 from Bonnyhill, Bonnybridge.
Also on offer was a selection of store sheep which saw breeding females peak at £132 for a pen of Beltex cross Texel gimmers from Leadmachany, Muthill, with rams to £380 for a Texel shearling from Walton, Cardross.
Beltex cross Texels from Parsons Mill, Cardenden, topped the stores at £79.
