A EWE lamb from David Moir's Cairness flock from Home Farm, Fraserburgh, proved the star attraction at a show and sale of Zwartbles sheep at Carlisle, attracting a new breed record of 3500gns.

The lamb, Cairness Dare Devil, a daughter of Eildon Hill Am yer Man, is a full sister to the 2015 show gimmer, Cairness Barbie Girl that was female champion at the National Show at Turriff and second in her class at the Highland. January-born and bred from the Tardoes Tartan Toff daughter, Eildon Hill Wait n' See, which was being sold as part of the flock dispersal, Dare Devil sells across the Irish Sea to Messrs Byrne, Co Cork, Eire.

Notably, Barbie Girl, a 2014-born ewe scanned for twins to Donbraid Direction, made 720gns to RM and WP Heigh and Son, Brook House, Bentham, Lancs.

Cairness Camera Shy, a gimmer by the flock's old stock ram, Cloverfield Toke, was the second top priced female from Mr Moir, selling for 750gns to Aberdeenshire producer, Faye Wilkie, Whitestone, Skene. This cracker is out of one of the flock's first females, Cairness Termendas Isla, by an imported sire and changed hands carrying a single to Cairness Director.

Three lots secured four figure bids at the collective sale, with the dearest at 1100gns being Thomas and Charlotte Critchley's fourth prize gimmer, Clarewood Cover Girl, from Mercer Farm, Hutton, Preston. A show winner as a ewe lamb and a gimmer, Cover Girl is by Cynefin Arwel, a ram that bred gimmers to 1300gns last year for the 25-ewe Clarewood flock, while the dam, Clarewood All Star, by Holmlea Titus, is also a noted show ewe. West Yorkshire breeder, GT Booth, Downshaw, Lothersdale, Keighley, gave the final nod on this entry which sold carrying a single to the 900gns Wallridge Moor Corder.

Two lots made 1000gns including the first prize gimmer from Welsh breeder, Olwen Hughes-Owen, who runs the Cynefin flock at Geirn, Carmel, Anglesey. His best, Cynefin Cain, by Cynefin Ben and out of a home-bred ewe, sold served to Hedgefield Brick Top, to P and S Addison, Hayberries, Mickleton, Barnard Castle.

Stranraer-based breeders, Colin and Helen Duffy, Dunragit, received the same money for their first prize ewe lamb, Smiddy Hill Deloras, a December-born daughter of Aquila After Shock, bred from the Skyhill Benjo-sired Blacklee Twiggy. She headed back to Stranraer with D Brisbane, Little Tongue, Castle Kennedy.

The champion from mother and son team, Joyce and Neil Millar, who run the Joyfield flock at Wood House Mains, Kirtle Bridge, Lockerbie, made 800gns. This was Millburn Willow, a 2012-born ewe bred by John Irving Bell, which is by Millburn Sam and out of a Millburn-bred ewe. A full sister to the 1400gns Millburn Blaze that stood reserve here in 2014, she changed hands served to Didcot Benji, to Mary-Julia Cornish, buying for her Devon-based flock at Oakland Park, Buckfastleigh.

And, at 700gns, Kirkby Stephen breeder, TR Birbeck, Becklyn, Soulsby, sold a gimmer from his Tombob flock by East Middle War Artist, to J Pritchard, Evistones, Rochester. The service sire was Stainmore Commander.
