Caithness Breeders’ Assocation multi-breed ram sale staged the same day as the show and sale of North Country Cheviots, saw 113 rams average £500.86, with a top price of £1200 paid for the Suffolk champion, a shearling from Willie Barnetson and sons, James and William, Lynegar, Watten, Wick.
Selected by Suffolk judge, Andrew Morris, Olrig, this Thurston Urastar son was knocked down to AH Mackay, West Greenland, Castletown, Thurso.
The Barnetsons also produced the second lead price of £1000 with another Suffolk shearling, while the reserve champion Suffolk from B Swanson, East Murkle, Thurso, made £650 also to AH Mackay, West Greenland.
Texels peaked at £900 when Douglas Webster, Lower Reiss, Wick, sold his champion, a home-bred shearling, to the judge, Arnott Coghill, Skinnet, Halkirk.
That was a son of Knock Vantastic, out of a Garngour Rob Roy-sired ewe.
Reserve Texel was a tup lamb from sisters, Abbie and Sophie Gunn, Hill of Forss, Thurso.
He is by Mitchellhill Van Gaal, and out of their sole ewe, a purchase from the Christmas Classic at Thainstone, last year, from the Breddie’s flock at Auchenbreddie, Insch. He made £800 to JR Burgess, Lower House, Hillwell, Shetland.
Border Leicester breeders, A Miller and Sons, Aimster, Thurso, took the breed championship with a home-bred shearling by a Ditton sire. Selected by judge, Michael Shearer, Lythmore, Westfield, he later sold for £550 to D Miller, Buckies Farm, Thurso.
Buckies also went to £400 for the reserve Border, another shearling ram from F Anderson, Osclay, Francis Street, Wick.
Douglas Webster was back in the money when he sold his any other breed champion, a bought-in two-shear Bluefaced Leicester ram, for £450 to JR Burgess, Lower House.
