A SELECTIVE trade prevailed throughout for the first Beltex Babes sale at Carlisle, last weekend, where only 55 lots from a catalogued entry of 97 were able to find new homes.

The sale of females from six units did however attract several four-figure prices, with trade peaking at 5000gns for Henry Jewitt's Jewitt Dance the Night Away, a January-born ewe lamb by Dolley Bulldozer ET, from Gracie's Farm, Barnard Castle, which sold with recipient dam. She is bred from the Airyolland Wurzel daughter, Loandhu Bonnie ET, that is a full sister to an £8000 tup and half sister to 11,000gns and 7000gns rams. Final bidder was D Saunders, Maidenlands, Tarn Flatt, Marton, Ulverston.

Donnie Allan, Ballochneck, Buchlyvie, bought the second top priced lot from Mr Jewitt at 1500gns, Jewitt Dance Party ET, another ewe lamb this time by Kingledores Churchill ET and bred from Jewitt Beauty Is In.

Paul Tippetts and Christine Williams' Hackney and Wilodge flocks from Shropshire sold the second top priced female at 3400gns to Harry Wood, Popes Farm, Dutton, Lancs. This was Hackney Chic ET, a gimmer by the record priced Topflite Al Pacino, bred from the Scooby Doo daughter, Hackney Wow ET. She is a full sister to the reserve male champion and the male champion at the Great Yorkshire and Royal Welsh Shows respectively, last year.

The long trip from Northern Ireland proved fruitful for Matthew Burleigh too, when he sold four at four-figures from his Matt's flock. Dearest at 3100gns was the February-born ewe lamb, Matt's Doll, an ET bred from Clary Whoopi-Do ET and sired by Hackney Corker. Yorkshire breeder, C Williamson, Thornhill Farm, Marton Cwm Grafton, Harrogate, was the final bidder.

Selling down to Nottinghamshire at 2100gns with V and G Bowring, Lakeside Bungalow, The Park, Mansfield, was a substitute entry by Matt's Detail ET bred from Loandhu Bella.

And, at 2000gns, Matt's Desiree ET, another February-born ewe lamb by Hackney Corker, was bought by fellow consignor, Andrew Wood, buying for his Withy Trees flock from Whittingham, Preston. Bred from the best breeding ewe in the flock, her dam is Matt's Adelle ET, a Hackney Warrior daughter that bred the first prize ram lambs at Lanark and Dungannon, last year.

On the other side of the equation, Mr Burleigh bought the dearest from the Withy Trees flock at 2200gns. This was Withy Trees Country Bumpkin, a gimmer by Kingledores Wigglesworth ET bred from the Lyonpark Thrust daughter, Beautry Winehouse.

Kevin and Rachel Buckle, Buckles Farm, Barras, Kirkby Stephen, also got in on the act, forking out 2000gns for Withy Trees Camping, another gimmer by Wigglesworth but bred from the 5000gns Buckles Watercress ET which in turn is a daughter of the twice winning Great Yorkshire Show champion, Broxty Supreme.

Withy Trees Cleopatra, a gimmer by Broxty Boxer ET out of Tercrosset Sunshine, also made the grade for Mr Wood, selling at 1600gns to MJ Ludgate, Scotsgrove, Thame, Oxon.

Averages: Jewitt and Sunnybank flock – Four ewes, £ 414.75; 12 recipients with lambs, £1132.25; five gimmers, £ 415.80. Hackney and Wilodge – Seven gimmers, £927.00. Matts – Four recipients with lambs, £2231.25. Withytrees – four recipients with lambs, £ 603.75; five gimmers, £1617.00
