A TOTAL of 75.5 acres of improved grassland and recently planted wooded land sold in three lots or as a whole through C and D Rural, at an auction held within the Tufton Arms Hotel, Appleby-in-Westmorland. 

Offered initially were the three individual lots – Lot one consisted of 9.64 acres of improved grassland and 8.05 acres of wooded gill; lot two offered 12.38 acres of grassland and 3.33 acres of wooded gill; while lot three comprised of two enclosures of improved grassland which totalled 42.1 acres. 

They attracted top bids of £100,000 (£5653 per acre), £76,000 (£4838 per acre) and £245,000 (£5820 per acre), respectively, before they were withdrawn and offered for sale as a whole. This attracted a final bid of £434,00, equivalent to £5748 per acre. 

According the Robin Steel, the land agent dealing with the sale, the eventual price exceeded expectations and highlighted a good demand for well located parcels of agricultural land.
