BIG SHEEP CHANGES ON THE WAY?

A new draft report designed to boost support for EU sheep producers in a bid to ensure the long-term viability of the sector was debated by Euro-MPs in Brussels this week, writes Amanda Cheesley.

The report argues that the long-term sustainability of EU sheep production is currently more under threat than ever. Despite a production deficit of sheepmeat in the EU, the sheep flock continues to fall, and demand is weak.
The report calls on the EU Commission and farm ministers to direct extra support as a matter of urgency to EU sheep producers.
The report adds that a new Environmental Sheep Maintenance Scheme per ewe could be introduced; linked to the positive environmental attributes associated with the maintenance of sheep production.
