JUNIOR BULLS CATCH BUYERS' EYE AT CARLISLE
Haltcliffe takes majority of top prices
A much reduced entry of Limousins met yet another flying trade at Carlisle last week, for the breed's May show and sale where no fewer than 11 bulls hit the magical five-figure bracket.
In previous years, this sale has attracted in excess of 450 Limousin bulls and females, but, with the fat trade having improved significantly, a number of tail end senior and intermediate bulls had already been sold through the prime market, which not only bolstered the overall quality on parade but also sale prices.
Sadly, however, 70 bulls were unable to travel to the event having been caught up in bluetongue restriction zones. By the end of what was a much shorter sale compared to previous years, 125 bulls sold to average £5048.40, up £567.45 with 60 fewer sold, but with an 83% clearance.
Junior bulls were greatest in demand with entries from the father and son team of Matt and Craig Ridley, Haltcliffe, Hesket-New-Market, proving most popular. In all, the duo, who run 90 pedigree Limousin cows alongside a smaller herd of pedigree Charolais females, sold 12 bulls to a top of 25,000gns for a half share with the family retaining the remaining half, to average a whopping £10,028.
Notably, if the 25,000gns bull was valued at 50,000gns, as he would be on paper', the Haltcliffe average would balance out an even more impressive £12,215.
