THE sorcerer’s apprentice stepped up to the mark once again at the Clydesdale Winter Fair when Charlotte Young produced the senior colt foal, Doura Magic Touch, to leave the large audience spell-bound by taking championship honours home to Hall Farm, by Ayr.

By Glebeview Sir Charles and out of the Carnaff Ambassador-sired mare, Ballinrees Lady Jane, the Irish-bred foal was champion at Kilmarnock, the North of Fife and Lothian foal shows.

Indeed, Glebeview Sir Charles was the sire of both the senior and junior colt foal winners and now has been acquired by the Doura Stud to stand in Scotland next season.

Amid a top quality entry the reserve title went to the senior champion, Hillhouse Zara, from Jim and Linzi Kennedy, Hillhouse, Sandilands, Lanark. Zara is a seven-year-old mare by Collessie Cut Above and out of the Hillhouse General Elect-sired mare, Hillhouse Millie.

The journey south from Muir of Ord proved worthwhile for Eric and Miranda Johnstone, who took the reserve senior championship with their yearling filly, Ord Tinkerbell, by Eskechraggan Ernest. This home-bred filly is out of Ord Envy, a Dillars Scottie-Boy daughter.

She was champion at the National Stallion Show in the spring and notched up several summer championships, including the Black Isle, Nairn, Sutherland, Keith, Grantown and Perth.

Judge, Iain Johnston, from the Falkirk-based Roughlands stud, awarded reserve foal honours to Fairhavens Queen of Hearts, from Moyra Stewart and grandson, Robert Barr, of Leys of Cossan, Roundyhill, Forfar. She is the first filly bred by Moyra and her late husband, Robert, and is by Redcastle Brelee Majestic, out of Fordelhill Lucinda – which was reserve overall at the Winter Fair four years ago.

From the same dam line came the reserve colt foal winner, Fordelhill Fascination, from Scott Greenhill, Leuchars Lodge, Fife. Fascination is by Glebeview Sir Charles and out of the Collessie Cut Above-sired mare, Fordelhill Jenny Anne, the grand dam to the reserve overall foal champion.

Windyknowe Margaret May, stood reserve filly foal winner for Paul and Matthew Bedford, Thorpe Hill, North Yorkshire.

This daughter of Dillars Top Gun, out of the Windyknowe Homer-sired mare, Windyknowe Chloe, was bred in Lanarkshire by Dorothy Combe and had stood reserve foal champion at Lanark and the North of Fife foal shows.

Quality not quantity was the order of the day in the Highland and Shetland pony rings.

Willie and Jennifer Allan of Millfield, Freuchie, took the Highland pony title with their yearling filly, Maeve of Millfield. She is by Glenmuir Lochaber and out of last year’s Winter Fair champion, Myleene of Millfield. She took red tickets at the HPS breed show, Braco, Kinross and the Central Scotland event, along with a second at the Highland.

Reserve was Neisha of Mendick, from John and Kate Dykes, Mendick Lea, West Linton, with a filly foal by Loandhu Silver Shadow and out of Gissings Luscardene and which is also the dam of the Dykes’ noted stallion, Islesman of Mendick. Neisha stood first at the Central Scotland Show earlier in the year.

The Shetland pony champion was the 11-year-old stallion, Kerloch Rupert, from John Watson, Jedburgh. Bred by Shirley Moro and by Stow Review, out of Burnbank Veda, Rupert is no stranger to the limelight having taken the Stallion Show championship in 2014 and again this year, as well as winning this year’s Great Yorkshire and Cumberland titles.

Reserve was the filly foal, Eynhallow Contessa, from the Laing family and by Sapphire Vision, out of Eynhallow Belle.

Both the best miniature and reserve top awards went to Susan Cook, of Shallochmill Shetlands. Champion was the mare, Halstock Orla, a daughter of Kerswell Socks and Halstock Sonny’s Oyster. She was on her first outing of this year, but last year had been mini youngstock winner at the Highland and junior champion at the National Stallion Show.

Reserve mini was a colt foal, Celadine’s Puzzle, which was bought recently in Hereford. Puzzle is by Bedwbach Fergus, out of Brandeston Celandine.
