TWICE retired jockey Will Ramsay, made a memorable comeback to record the second double of his race-riding career at Saturday's Lauderdale point-to-point.

The 46-year-old Berwickshire rider won the penultimate NPPA Club members' race and was back in the winner's enclosure after taking the concluding maiden.

He rode his own Great Gusto, purchased from Worcestershire via the internet, to a five-length success over 7-4 favourite Annie Aces in a seven-strong NPPA race - the largest field of a bitterly cold afternoon.

"This is the third time I've made a comeback and that was just great," enthused Will, who rode with a video-cam attached to his skull cap. Will then picked up a chance ride aboard Flying Master, whichfinished alone in a drama-packed open maiden.

Owner, Doreen Calder, who saddled two of the three runners, candidly admitted she had only entered the 12-year-old to boost numbers.

"The only reason I put him in was because there were so few entries, and I also thought he could give the young horse a lead round," she explained.

Her debutant Flying Central produced a pleasing first-time performance, only to be carried out at the penultimate fence by favourite Lay De Brook, who had ducked out through the wing four from home.

Scotland's final fixture of the Northern Area season moved from the Sabbath for the first time in 18 years, and a decent crowd braved the elements at Mosshouses, near Galashiels.

After taking a tumble in the opener, Tom Hamilton made amends in the following maiden for four, five, six, and seven-year-olds, when Chandos gave the Hawick jockey his 40th winner. He got the seven-year-old up by three-quarters of a length over the challenging Catchamat.

"He's a lovely horse, who had just lost his confidence a bit, "explained Sandy Thomson, whose wife Quona trains the gelding at their Greenlaw home.

Owner James Adam also has horses under Rules with Sandy.

Denholm jockey Harriet Bryce rode Damiens Dilemma to win the Border Hunts Club members race for Northern Area point-to-point chairman Robert Miller-Bakewell.

A winner at Friars Haugh last time out, the seven-year-old is trained at Selkirk by Lesley Coltherd.

"He did look like he was going to win anyway," said the trainer's husband, Stuart, after the outsider of the three runners finished alone, when Farm Pixie crashed through the wing and The Gotforman unseated at the last.

Hawick jockey, Joanna Walton, is in great form, and she added further to her tally when landing the ladies' open race in a thrilling finish, getting Oscar Stanley up by a neck over Temple Green.

Posting a second consecutive victory, he carries the colours of Northumberland's Diana Blythe, and is trained by the winning jockey's mother, Di.

The consistent Ballyvesey - runner-up in four of his last five outings - gained an elusive and well-deserved victory in the men's open for Drew Holmes.

Recent Tranwell winner, Dannanceys Hill justified favouritism to record a four-length victory in the restricted.

Racing was preceded by three competitive pony races.

Fourteen-year-old Abby Robertson from Melrose won the novice race riding Morgan, while Charlie Todd, 13, rode Little Anne to victory in the 138cm section, and 15-year-old Connor Murtagh won the 148cm on Pick Pocket.
