MARY McFarlane had a successful day at Ingliston's recent dressage competition when she rode her lovely Deoch An Doris to win both elementary open sections.

Mary won elementary 44 with 74%, which was the highest mark of the day. Mary said: "I was really pleased with Wodka's results at Ingliston. It was his first outing since winning the advanced single horse championship at Windsor with Jock (my husband) so I thought he may have been a bit cheeky but he behaved very well in first test and only had a couple of spooky moments in the second.

"I was riding him in a double bridle which makes life easier for me as he can be quite strong when he wants. He is used to the curb from driving so he is happy to accept it and he produced some pleasing forward work without losing elasticity or submission."

Runner up to Mary was David Gatherer on his own and Sheena Welsh's Bingo Z. David has had the eight-year-old for two years and this was their first BD competition. David also won both novice open sections, both scoring over 70%.

David reflected: "Bingo is a big horse and I have been careful to give him plenty of time to develop. He is a very exciting horse for the future and has qualified for the novice winter regionals in only three competitions. He was kicked in the summer when he was in the field and I decided to give him a break, so this is his first time out for a while, but he settled really quickly and although he can be strong, he gave me some really nice work.

"He is for sale, but I am enjoying playing about with him while we still have him."

Jill Grant won both medium open sections with All That Jazz. Jill and the six-year-old son of Jazz are the reigning Scottish open elementary champions. All That Jazz is co-owned by Jill and the XL Stud and is home-bred out of Northern Maresca, a mare that Jill previously competed.
