There was further misery for Scotland's event riders with the news this week that Auchinleck horse trials will not be held in 2014.

Organiser Aly Boswell has been running the event at the picturesque Auchinleck Estate in Ayrshire for the past 30 years and despite it being one of the few courses in Scotland to cater from all levels from 80cm to advanced level, this year's event on July 21 looks set to be the last.

They were set to run this year on April 27/28 but due to weather was cancelled a few days before, however this week they were told by British Eventing (BE) that there was no space in the 2014 calendar.

"Auchinleck must have been cancelled more often than any other BE event," said Aly.

"BE had pushed our date back due to Badminton but the advanced section didn't pay. We'd be happy to run a lower scaled event up to novice level but BE say there is no date available."

With their April date lost BE gave Auchinleck a replacement July date at 80 to 100cm level.

The Pony Club Area 19 interbranch dressage and eventing areas will be held at Auchinleck on July 30/31 from junior to open level and without the BE event Aly worries that could be the end of the pony club course. "We need the two events to keep it sustainable. We've five courses with around 80 to 90 jumps, all need to be changed and replaced in rotation every year. We've already started dismantling the advanced course but we would like to keep the BE with classes up to novice level," added Aly.

British Eventing have said they are trying to find a date for Auchibleck next year but have confirmed there will be two new venues in Scotland next year – Central Scotland has two events at Dalkeith and Brechin returns to the calendar in May.
