JEDBURGH based jockey, Callum Bewley, had a successful Perth Festival – winning the Highland National and also being crowned Northern champion conditional jockey.

He rode 18-1 chance Boric to head the feature handicap chase on the final afternoon of the three-day festival on April 28.

The winner, trained in Northumberland by Simon Waugh, gave him a second Festival victory, having earlier ridden the Jim Goldie-trained Great Fighter to head the concluding two-mile handicap hurdle, on the opening afternoon two days earlier.

This win was adding to his Ayr success just a week earlier and Haydock is now the target. “The Ayr race was the plan and this one is a bonus,” said the Glasgow handler.

“We would like to aim him at the Swinton Hurdle and I am hopeful he will get in now after this win,” he added.

St Boswells owners, Paul and Clare Rooney, also had a winner at Perth on April 26, when Beeves posted a 7-1 victory in the three-mile handicap chase.

Hawick jockey, Jamie Hamilton, rode 8-1 chance Sun Cloud to victory in the conditional jockeys’ handicap hurdle race on the second day of the Perth Festival.

Meanwhile, Northumberland trainer, Susan Corbett and jockey son, James, teamed up to win the two-mile handicap hurdle race with 33-1 victor Bahrikate.

On the final afternoon, Alnwick trainer Rose Dobbin saw Planet Nine – owned by her parents, Sarah and Duncan Davidson – head the bumper.

On the Flat at Doncaster, Hawick-based Jason Hart rode Acclaim the Nation to a 14-1 win in the five-furlong handicap, and was quickly back in the winner’s enclosure the following afternoon, riding Jack Flash to head the five-furlong handicap at Ripon.

Irvine jockey, Danny Tudhope, was also successful at the fixture, riding Daawy to land the 1m 2f maiden stakes.

Jim Goldie continued his victory trail at Doncaster, on April 29, when Nicholas T won the opening miler handicap at odds of 16-1.

Jason Hart then celebrated his third successive win when riding 8-1 chance Zanetto to head the six-furlong handicap at Thirsk, on April 30, where Danny Tudhope also had a winner, partnering Miscika to land the six-furlong maiden.

The Irvine jockey was quickly back in the winner’s enclosure after riding Sunglider to head the 1m 2f handicap at Beverley on May 1.

Jamie Hamilton rode Miss Conway to head the two-mile handicap chase at Hexham on April 25.

Jonathon Bewley, reduced his claim to 3 lbs when partnering Classical Milano to a 22-1 victory in the maiden hurdle race for his father, George, who recently moved from Southdean, on the outskirts of Hawick, to Cumbria.

The success proved a real family affair – the jockey’s sister Victoria being a co-owner of the six-year-old.

Langholm jockey Dale Irving also rode Apache Pilot to win the three-mile handicap chase.
