First-time Tayside Foal Show competitors Yvonne and Ian Spence made their journey south from Inverness to Forfar Market more than worthwhile when they lifted the Shetland pony supreme.

The breeders topped the ultimate line-up in the Shetland ring with their May-born filly foal Warrackston Tiger Lily, sired by Tarves of Hutton and bred out of Tay of Hutton.

She was home-bred at Leys Castle Home Farm, Inverness, where her future will lie as a broodmare.

Tiger Lily previously collected class wins at both the Northern Working Horse Show and the Black Isle earlier this year.

Ian and Yvonne, who run two stallions with around nine mares at their Warrackston Stud, had never previously exhibited at Forfar.

The reserve overall title was won by the increasingly consistent Kerswell Merlot, which also stood miniature champion for the Alichbrae Stud, Crieff.

The stud, run by Stevie and Jackie Mckay, with their daughter Kirsty, was founded six years ago and evolved after Stevie, a director of a fencing company, worked on the Shetland Isles, over a number of years.

Kerswell Merlot, which was bred in Westcountry, Devon, recently stood miniature champion and the Shetland Pony Group's autumn youngstock show at Stirling.

Prior to that, he stood reserve champion at Tealing Horse Show and best miniature Shetland at Fife.

The supreme win in the Highland pony ring was collected by Sandy Baird, on behalf of his son Greig.

Dunbar-based Greig's winner was his two-year-old filly, Whitefield Princess Silver.

She was bred by Sandy, out of Whitefield Princess Nickel, at the family farm in Blairgowrie, and she is Greig's first Highland of his own.

The filly was sired by the successful stallion Matador of Whitefield, which himself recently stood reserve overall at this year's Duthie Park Highland Pony Show.

Greig intends to follow in the family footsteps and begin breeding Highland ponies himself and Whitefield Princess Silver will be his foundation mare.

Having stood first in her class at Alyth Show this year, she progressed to become a trophy winner at the HPS Breed Show, at Strathallan, and last year won her class at the National Stallion Show.

Judge Bruce Haliburton found the breed reserve in the yearling class winner, Maggie May II of Turin Hill, owned by Hamish Cameron, of Westcot, Pitkennedy, Forfar. This filly was bred out of Maydew of Turin Hill and sired by Turin Hill Kylemore.
