Supreme at the BSPS Scotland Winter Show, held at Rowallan, was the cob champion Barneebus, ridden by Kirstine Douglas.

Last season they were champion cob at HOYS and the plan is to campaign for HOYS and the RIHS again this season. "He enjoys showing too much to retire," said Kirstine

"He really showed himself, and went fabulous," said Helen Outram, the supreme judge. Her choice for the reserve supreme was the pretty little Welsh section A Shamrocklake Shirley Temple, ridden by Holly Stewart from the Borders.

"It's a perfect child's pony," added Helen.

Holly has been riding the seven-year-old Dutch-bred Welsh A mare for three seasons and last year they were mini champions at the Royal Highland and sixth at HOYS.

Working hunter classes were held outside on the allweather surface, the bitterly cold east wind brought their own problems as the jumps were being blown over, but with the committee enlisted to help course builder Tricia Fearn and extra jump wings weighing down the fences there were good entries across all classes.

The open champion was Ariadne Weir and Otto. The family friom Dumfries have owned the 13-year-old skewbald gelding for four years with older brother and sister Megan and Russell both riding him. In the mixed height open class, the Weir family filled the top three places with Philippa second with Freckleton Maximus and Zara third with Noble Super Ted.

"Otto jumped the most fantastic round, with his ears pricked and the weather didn't phase it," said judge Heather Metcalfe.

Reserve was Caroline Orr with the five-year-old Laura's Pride. By the showjumping stallion Polling, the chestnut was champion novice working hunter at the BSPS Finale.

Hayden Hodgson won the mini working hunter pony champion with Cadlan Valley Picasso, a 12-year-old Welsh scetion B gelding.

"We went to south Wales to buy him, and he has been pony club eventing. This year they'll be aimed at nursery stakes and 133cm classes," said mum Andrea.

James Houlden has struck up a good partnership with last year's HOYS winner Pontsarn Sidan to stand reserve after landing the cradle stakes class.

In the native working hunters Hannah Sloan produced a good round with the Anderson family's Welsh section D Haylers Jazz to stand champion, ahead of Caperann Swift.

With RIHS horse and coloured qualifiers on offer, the BSPS classes were the best supported. The pony classes were strong and champion and reserve came from this section, both owned by Martin Wood. Champion was the five-year-old Palmaira, ridden by Adam Foster, she was supreme in-hand at CHAPS as a three-year-old.

"The champion was full of quality and has a very promising future ahead of it," said judge Helen Outram. "And the reserve gave a beautiful, mannerly show."

Reserve was the traditional, The Pied Piper, ridden by Michaela Wood.

Michaela also secured another two reserve tickets, first with the small hack Royal Angel, a past HOYS champion, and DPUK Night Dancer, a four-year-old, was intermediate reserve. They were both from Jerome Hartforth, who also produced Westerdale Regal Max to win two championships – the intermediate with Lucinda Elliott and the riding horse with Caroline Darcy Potts.

Westerdale Regal Max was bred by Caroline's father Ian Darcy, the six-year-old is by Willowcroft Regal Bronze and out of Minora Bay, which won the Cuddy qualifier at the Highland Show and Ian rode at HOYS in the lightweight hunters.

Ian's grandson Callum Potts won the ridden pony supreme title with Whalton So Mighty, by the NPS young stallion of the year Whalton Above Suspicion. The five-year-old show hunter pony was making its show debut and was bred in Aberdeenshire at the Raemoir Stud.

Reserve ridden pony supreme was Katelin McCartney with Abba's Blue Rainbow.

The riding horse reserve was the large victor, Lesley Storrie's Fenwick Rubix, a 15-year-old grey gelding ridden and produced by Emma Jane Smith. Last year they were fourth at the Highland Show and will be aimed at pre-veteran classes this year.

The cob reserve was the heavyweight winner, Randals Town Happy Jack, ridden by Kirsty Pickles, for her father Paddy Ahern and Linda Johnston.

Emma Boardman won the hack championship with small height winner Whalton Pinball Wizard. The 10-year-old is owned by Guy Mears.

"He's the prefect schoolmaster for Mr Mears' daughter Isabella to learn to ride in adult classes this season," said Emma.

"Both hacks had elegance, quality and manners. The small gave a correct show and really smooth transitions," said judge Rachel Helliwell.

The mini riding pony champion was the first ridden Lowland Toy Soldier, ridden by Erin Macgregor. The seven-year-old is by Lowland Pizzazz and is a former lead rein pony. Reserve was the lead rein rein pony Senetview Angelica, ridden by Sophie Leigh Clements.
