The Cabin EC just outside Inverurie ran its 10-day ‘Sunshine Tour’ again this year, attracting even more competitors to its vast array of classes, evening entertainment, courses and prizes – all with its usual friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

Sitting in the sun overlooking the large outdoor arena, competitors may have felt like they were abroad this year as they sat and watched some serious competition.

Remaining on the crest of a lucrative wave just now is Kilmarnock’s Graham Babes. Recently returned from a successful trip to Addington and having only been crowned South-west Open champion a couple of weeks ago, he bagged yet another title and wallet full of cash in the North-east open championship.

Warming up with a double clear in the 1.3m the previous day, Graham and Boucheron sailed through to the jump off over Di Beaumont’s up to height track to be joined by a handful of others with four combinations going on to record double clears leaving the clock to play its part.

Sandra Low Mitchell had a good show with her Eccosse, which was bred by the Babes family. Relatively new at this level, Sandra did not overly push the attractive bay gelding to slot into fourth.

Sarah Gibb was having a busy show riding her novice, Groovy Chic, into the top six in the baby classes first thing in the morning but it was her longer-term partner Wotnot, which was an enthusiastic third.

The top two were to really battle it out when Lucy Guild, winner of another two 1.3m classeson the super speedy Hugana Vant Heike put the foot to the floor to set a fast target.

But Graham rose to the challenge set by Lucy to scorch round on the careful 11-year-old Boucheron and squeeze out in front.

Graham was also seen in the money in a foxhunter on Farao M and some smaller classes with JJ’s Impressive and the up and coming Glencoe.

Lucy Guild's compensation was a Cabin EC 1.3m championship win on Hugana with Sandra and Eccosse breathing down their necks.

The discovery second round qualifier offers tickets to the British National championships and is run over three rounds. Jumping perfectly from start to finish was Holly Miller on her own five-year-old mare, Hardy. This scopey bay made everything look too easy to stay clear over the three rounds and take the prize.

Fife-based Carla Ryce slotted into second place on her nine-year-old Conqueror, which she has only been riding since November last year.

Susan Deasy was back on form with the Hermes De Reve mare, Reve D, finishing third and well turned out as always. In fourth and fifth was Samantha Wiseman on Fleur De Mai and Anika Couture.

Samantha was in incredible form throughout the show, winning no fewer than seven classes on her two mares, Fleur De Mai and Annie XX, earning her the leading rider title. The former also led the British novice second round

In this class, Samantha was the only one to remain clear in all three rounds, taking the only qualifier.

David Harland only managed a couple of days, but still took home prize money for wins in a 1.2m and a 1.2m championship final with Fauber, which was also second in a 1.3m, and in a 1.05m championship final with Liz Smith’s white-faced chestnut, Serata 3.

Stuart Muirhead is having a fabulous season. Not only did he finish third in the bronze league table but he found out at Cabin that he had also been chosen to represent Scotland at Weston Lawns, in the BS Academy teams.

Falkirk’s Nikki McCafferty (nee Robb) once again won the 90cm title with Kocomo.
