A huge number of riders headed north to The Cabin EC’s spring show run over four days and jumped in their fabulous outdoor arena with a variety of classes to suit all.

The stables were fully booked and the classes full to the brim with some starting almost 60 at this popular, fun, friendly centre so much so that they ran out of daylight hours mid-way through a class one evening meaning half a class was run indoors after everyone pulled together and a new course was built.

Full marks to the Cabin team and course designer, Di Beaumont, for keeping the whole show going throughout and to BS for awarding an extra two qualifying places in the split class.

Royal Highland Show qualifiers were once again a huge draw and this time there were six sets of qualifying tickets on offer.

The first of the RHS novice qualifiers saw a win for Strathaven’s Mischa Irving on her own home broken and produced huge grey Hayco G.

Winner of the six-year-old championship at Muirmill, recently, this grey gelding by Cassini Gold was one of only two clears over a track standing around the 1.3m mark and one of the biggest he has faced so far.

The only other clear and just over a second in arrears was the new partnership of Stephen Lohoar on Blythe Brewster’s Carthino G.

Successful with Mark Turnbull before joining Stephen to be put on the market this good-looking grey popped the jump off easily to pick up his ticket for the final.

The second part of this jump off resulted in two young riders earning their tickets.

PJ Williams is back out in force with his own stallion Master Calvaro. Having spent some time off when the Williams family didn’t think ‘Bentley’ was just feeling on top form he seems to have found his way back to full fitness with a vengeance qualifying for two classes at this his first outing for months.

They collected their Novice ticket by jumping fast and clear in this second and slightly controversial jump off along with junior rider Shaunie Greig riding Ron Brady’s Baltimore Landzicht.

PJ went on to dominate the RHS Classic qualifier. Stopping the clock on 36.34s he took the red ticket home to his Bellfield stables base just outside Lesmahagow dropping Harriet Ross on Elottie down into second.

Harriet would not be disappointed with her show. Her nine-year-old Arrezzo-sired mare, Elottie, was only slightly arrears in the classic (37s) but also finished second in the RHS B+C qualifier to ensure she has two classes to contest at the Highland in June.

Sandy McLean is one of a few riders still eligible for junior classes who is really making his mark in seniors just now. Seen winning some bigger open classes he can also be found nursing some babies round at the beginning of the day showing a lot of talent for both jobs.

His Scottish bred Eclipse XII made Di Beaumont’s B+C track look too easy when he posted a fast double clear to collect his ticket.

Hanleen Beatrice was bred in Scotland by Harry Aird by his late stallion Otis out of a For Pleasure mare joining Rosie Pindar exactly a year ago.

Since then they have worked their way from Discovery to jumping 1.3m and finding the second RHS Novice qualifier to their liking when they scorched round to stand in front of Emma Crawford with her own Dukes Of Hazzard with these two both qualifying.

Rosie also found herself in third in the Young Masters slotting in behind sisters Lucy Guild, Hugana Vant Heike and Aimee Bell with Cameron Poe.

Other big winners throughout the show were Shaunie Greig who is giving the seniors some fresh competition winning no less than nine classes.

Silver Dream and Cierania accounted for four of these but taking the majority was Porcia II who is as competitive as her new jockey winning almost every British Novice and Discovery over the whole weekend.

Nicole Lockhead Anderson had a weekend away from ponies to steer the former PJ Williams ride Kaliki into the lead in a 1.20m Open.

Sandra Low Mitchell had a team up from her Balcormo base in Fife under several different riders. Charlotte Thomlinson is not long off pones but was seen doing a good job with some novices including I Can Try(out of the well known mare Can But Try), Indiscreet LM and the more experienced and useful Brunette on which she tackled the Highland show qualifiers.

Sandra was seen winning on her Corroghoe Storm six-year-old Hi Ho as well as the Talan sired How Easy LM.

Craig Hamilton was a duel winner on Ron Brady’s homebred Dynamic who flew round to set the fastest times overall in competitive 1.1m and 1.15m members cup classes.
