THE SCOTTISH farming sector could grind to a halt if a swine flu pandemic strikes later this year. Major sheep and cattle sales could be at risk.

It’s a big win for the Simmy steaks

STEAKS FROM cattle consigned by Deeside and Buchan beef producers claimed the top four places in the annual McIntosh Donald/Tesco Scotch steak championships at the Royal Highland Show.

Youngsters beat the veterans

ONE OF the largest entries of poultry at the Highland – up 250 head on the year – was led by three of the youngest exhibitors, Alyson and Alasdair (both 11) and Gregor (7) Henderson, from Alderside, Peebles Road, Carnwath, Lanarkshire.

Jennifer shows she is a cut above

For the second year in succession, the Cawdor Cup winner and overall Clydesdale leader stems from Mollinhillhead bloodlines. This year’s topper was the three-year-old mare, Mollinhillhead Lady Jennifer, bred by Robert Stewart, of Mollinhillhead, Mollinsburn, and shown in the ring by 16-year-old champion handler and stockman, Amanda Stewart.

Charollais wins

HISTORY WAS made in the sheep lines at the Highland, when the Charollais champion went on to win the coveted overall sheep championship for the first time, while the Hampshire Down breed picked up its first ever Highland inter-breed title in the pairs competition.
