Buyers of Simmental bulls heading to Orkney and Shetland at this month's Bull Sales at UA Stirling and at the February sale in 2016, will be subsidised transport to the islands, in recognition of the financially challenging summer caused by extremely poor weather there.

The Simmental Cattle Society will contribute to the transport of all such bulls heading north to the isles, with administration handled at United Auctions by means of a reduction at source from purchasers accounts.

Commenting on the subsidy society chief executive Neil Shand said: "It has been a pretty dismal summer across the northern part of the UK, however Orkney appears to have suffered more than most with some cattle still housed on the longest day and harvest still not complete.

"By partially subsidising the transport of bulls to the islands we are giving support to those commercial farmers who are major supporters of our breed."
