This new holiday accommodation gives a whole new meaning to the phrase Busman’s Holiday at Bankrugg Farm, near Gifford, Haddington.
For the Stewart family, Balfour, Elaine and son, Sandy, have commissioned the conversion of two single decker buses to provide rather special rural retreats which have been hand-crafted by son-in-law, Jason Baker, of Good With Wood.  The conversion of a double-decker bus is planned in time for the 2017 tourist season.
Balfour said:  “As a bus enthusiast, with a small collection of old and vintage buses, I was delighted the local planning department shared our vision and felt bold enough to approve our rather novel proposal to turn these into accommodation for a new holiday business.”
The family spotted a growing trend for staycation holidays and are capitalising on the stunning scenery which surrounds their working farm in East Lothian.
‘The Bus Stop’ is situated on a working arable farm and during your stay you will be able to witness the day to day running of the farm, which changes throughout the year depending on the season. The farm is home to alpacas, horses, sheep and chickens!
Throughout the year the farm is home to old buses, which are in all different levels of restoration. The bus enthusiasts who restore these buses were the inspiration behind The Bus Stop.
The Stewarts have taken the step of converting one of the stable blocks into a small farm larder, supplying a few essentials such as wine, beer, ice-cream, milk, bread and eggs (freshly laid on the farm). You will also have the opportunity to purchase alpaca wool products, home baking and a selection of local produce.
Additionally, there is also a log store for those extra logs on a chilly Scottish evening, a secure bike/golf store and a drying area.
The buses themselves have a glass roof, allowing holiday makers to sleep under the stars in the king size bed, there are bunk beds in the living area for two children also. Each bus will include a wood-burning stove, creating a cosy, romantic atmosphere on the cooler nights and a wood-fired hot tub on a private decking area.
