A home-grown, Scottish product bursting with health benefits – we should be shouting from the rooftops about the successes of our small scale oil producers.

In 2009, there was 20 thousand hectares of rapeseed planted in Scotland, producing 101 thousand hectares of rapeseed which traditionally is grown for the food manufacture sector eg. margarine, cattle feed, and also more recently biofuel. Here are the three Scottish producers of cold pressed rapeseed oil in the north, which started out as a way of adding value to their product and is now looking like a viable business for all three of them.

Ten times the omega 3 content of olive oil Contains omega 3, 6, 9

Full of Vitamin E

which is a natural anti oxidant.

Contains High Density Lipids, which is the good cholesterol, which helps eliminate Low Density Lipids (the bad cholesterol)

• There is one other company producing cold pressed rapeseed in Scotland, called Border Fields, but the Scottish Farmer understands that the rapeseed is collected and processed in both Scotland and England, and therefore concentrated on the three independent producers in the north of Scotland.
