Hannah Rankin (27) left her family’s home farm, Edentaggart, in Argyll and Bute, on the West Coast of Scotland in 2012 for the bright lights of London.

Rather unusually, Hannah has carved out a career in both music and boxing and is enjoying trying to balance her time between both her passions. She agreed to do our quick-fire question and answer round.

What qualities has growing up on a farm given you?

It has taught me the value of hard work, responsibility, discipline, respect and the desire to always be out exploring new ideas and learning new things. All of which have been invaluable in both my careers as a musician and boxer.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I always had my head in a book so I was determined I was going to be some sort of adventurer or explorer visiting places around the world! As I got older, I looked into archaeology, marine biology, languages and, of course, music.

When did you leave for London?

I left for London in 2012 as I was moving down to study for my Masters at the Royal Academy of Music.

You’re a musician, where did your love of music come from?

My mum. She was always singing and playing the piano at home and encouraged us to learn instruments when we got older. She took us to orchestra, lessons and music camps as children and we used to perform together a lot.

What instrument(s) do you specialise in?

My principal study is the bassoon, but I started on the flute and also teach clarinet and music theory.

What would a usual day be like for you?

My usual routine involves getting up early to get my first training session of the day done and then I go to teach music in various schools around London.

I then come back to the gym to do my second session with my coach and some days I teach a boxing class in the evening.

How did you get involved in boxing?

I did Tae-Kwon-Do when I was a kid and I loved combat sports from then. I had to stop when I went into music as mum was concerned I’d break something!

But I got back in to Muay Thai boxing for fitness at the end of my undergraduate in Glasgow and continued with it when I moved to London.

My trainer left to go abroad and introduced me to Derek Williams, the former European and Commonwealth heavyweight champion and now my manager. I couldn’t ask him to train me in Thai boxing, so I moved over to traditional boxing.

From that point, I fell in love with the sport and then I got introduced to my trainer, Noel Callan and a firm partnership was formed and we are now 2-0 in the professional ranks.

What do you enjoy about boxing?

I love the discipline and the fact that there is always something new to be learnt! Different combinations, ways to set up shots, movement, defence, are just some of the things to think about and all the time focusing on being better than your opponent.

What are you ambitions in the sport?

I am aiming to become world champion at my weight and then we shall see where we go from there, maybe drop down a weight category?

What is your true passion, music or boxing?

They are both equal. They work hand in hand actually and require equal amounts of discipline, focus and practice and both allow me to perform, either on stage or in the ring!

How often do you get back to Scotland to visit?

I try to get back as often as I can to see my dad and my gran and when the schools are off I usually make it back to the farm at the top of Glen Luss, where my dad, Andrew Rankin, has been farming Blackies for 27 years.

I’d like to fight at home sometime soon as it would be great for folks at home to see me fight.

What would your perfect work/life balance involve?

I’m aiming to be able to box regularly and perform with my wind quintet with a bit of teaching thrown in as I love working with kids. At the moment the ratios are a little bit different with having to pay the bills, but I’m getting there!
