A child dies as a result of cot death every nine days in Scotland.

To many people this is just a sad statistic, but to the Adams family of Clugston Farm, in Wigtownshire, it is an awful reality.

In April, last year, they awoke to find their seven-week-old son Drew, had died in the night and their lives had changed forever.

It is every parent's nightmare to lose a child. In the weeks that followed the family, Graham, Catriona and their three older children Libby, now 10, Callum, eight and six-year-old Duncan, slowly had to rebuild their lives and have done so with the support of the Scottish Cot Death Trust (SCDT).

To repay this support the Adams' have decided to help the SCDT by fundraising in Drew's memory. They have been overwhelmed by the support they have received from the rural community where Graham grew up and they still live with their children.

The children started their efforts when they nominated the SCDT to be the charity to receive money from their school, Kirkcowan Primary, 'Buy a Chirstmas wish' last year.

On the anniversary of Drew's death the family met with the Machars and Rhinns Young Farmers who had asked them to accept a cheque for £400 on behalf of the SCDT, money raised from their annual concert.

This was such a wonderful thing to do on such a sad day and meant a great deal to Graham as an ex-Young Farmer himself.

On seeing the SCDT advertise Firewalks in the Central Belt, Catriona, who has recently started as a befriender for the trust, decided this was for her and appealed to her friends for someone to join her.

Overwhelmed by the response, and along with their friends, Lyndsay and Robin Gibb, from Stranraer, a new Firewalk was proposed in Stranraer. A few weeks on and Wigtownshire is under siege from a barrage of Firewalkers.

On Bonfire Night, November 5, 2012, Catriona, Lyndsay and some brave volunteers will take to the hot coals around 7pm in Agnew Park, Stranraer.

Lyndsay, herself a mother of four, said: "My fear of walking the burning coals, while immense, is nothing compared to my fear of losing one of my children," and has appealed to others who share the sentiment to donate what they can.

In the run up to the Firewalk the SDHDA will be providing hot food and drink from around 6pm and the Stranraer Guitar Club and Loch Ryan Pipe Band will be there to keep supporters entertained.

If you are in the area please go along and support the event. Everyone is welcome and wrap up warm if you are not doing the Firewalk!

If you would like to support Catriona in her fundraising for SCDT, donations can be made through her JustGiving website "Donate for Drew" (www.justgiving.com/DonateforDrew).

Ultimately, they would like to raise £50,000, £1000 for each day of Drew's short, but precious life, and will keep fundraising until they hit this target.

If would like to join in please contact the Scottish Cot Death Trust on 0141 357 3946 or contact@scottishcotdeathtrust.org to register for £15 and all you have to do is raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship. And walk the coals, of course!
