THE NATIONAL Museum of Rural Life at Kittochside, East Kilbride will host one of the equine highlights of the year this Sunday (July 14) when dozens of Clydesdale horses, Shetland ponies and donkeys will gather for its annual Heavy Horse Show.

The event brings together over 40 of these gentle giants in the beautiful setting of the attraction's 1950s working farm. Around 60 Shetland ponies and six donkeys will also take part.

The heavy horses attending the Museum event will compete in individual classes, displays in harness, an agility course for horse and carriage and an event for two-wheeled carts. The National Museum of Rural Life's own Clydesdale, Mairi, will make her debut as a competitor at the popular event when she enters the Ridden class.

At the attraction's farm, Living History Scotland will perform costume and weaponry displays, taking visitors back in time to the Battle of Bothwell Bridge in 1679 where the Reid family, who once owned the Museum's Kittochside home, fought for the Army of the Covenant.

Kittochside's acting general manager Dorothy O'Neill, said: "This event provides a unique opportunity to see up-close the majestic Clydesdale horses that would have been a common sight in the fields across Scotland in years gone by. We also have a range of children's craft workshops, stalls and all of our usual great attractions making this an ideal family day out."
