Organising your wedding day can be right up there with the likes of moving house and starting a new job when it comes to stress levels, but it doesn’t have to be! We have asked the wedding co-ordinator of one of Glasgow top wedding venues to give you her advice, and having looked after hundreds of weddings her top tips come from first-hand experience. So straight form the horse’s mouth here are Hannah Cochrane’s top planning tips.

1. Location, Location, Location – it’s an obvious one, but it really is the first and most important thing you need to think about. It’s essential to have in mind what style you want, how will it affect the experience you have in mind for your guests and how will it look in your photos. The trend just now is all about the experience, and the venue you select to host your day is at the heart of this.

2. Work with people you trust - your wedding is such an important life event, you want to have it run exactly how you envisioned. While it would be lovely to have a wedding planner doing all the hard work for you, this is not for everyone so this next best thing is to make sure you are working with people you are comfortable with. Do your homework so that you feel confident and know that your suppliers have had positive reviews, or even better have been referred by someone you trust. At House for an Art Lover we work with an array of preferred suppliers, because they know the venue well and our couples praise them time and again.

3. Keep it quality for the things that matter – there are certain aspects to your day that people will remember no matter what and food is one of them. I know our head chef puts a big focus into creating menus using only the best quality Scottish Produce, from local producers wherever possible. This shows on the plate and I am always receiving letters saying “my guests are still raving about the food”. Keeping your guests well fed and watered on the day is a must, and quality options needn’t cost the world either!

4. Don’t be overwhelmed – There is a whole host of information out there on what you should or shouldn’t be doing for your wedding, don’t get too caught up on the wedding hype. Make sure that you create a day that genuinely reflects you both. There are great tools on the web to help keep you organised (such as Bride Book) and things like Pinterest are great for inspiration, but don’t try to fit in everything that’s on trend!

5. Add a little bit of you – There are so many ways you can incorporate a little of yourselves into the day, from table names to tunnocks teacake to a wellie throw, just ask if it’s possible you never know! Don’t be afraid to ask questions and make changes to supplier’s suggestions in order to ensure that you get the day that you want. We have set packages at the venue but I’m always happy to make things bespoke for a couple if they have something specific in mind!

Most of all – enjoy it, it’s your day!
