Jim and Selina Ross’ well-known Galloway show cow, Doon of Urr Nerys 42, added yet another notch to her belt at Moffat Show, last weekend, when the inter-breed judge, Muriel Johnston, crowned this rising 10-year-old cow champion of champions.

Nerys, an in-calf cow by Diamond B Deadline, from Romesbeoch, Shawhead, has enjoyed a formidable show career in recent years and this year alone has scooped the inter-breed cattle championship at Dumfries and at the breed’s national show at Cumberland before going on to win the supreme overall champion of champions accolade at both Peebles and Moffat.

In the cattle line-up she beat off strong competition, with the reserve being selected from the prime cattle section. This was Peach Schnapps, a 16-month-old Limousin cross heifer from Ian and Dot Goldie, Greenfield, Annan. Their show stopper, bought at a Carlisle Spring show and sale where she stood champion, has also enjoyed notable success having stood overall champion of champions at Stonehouse.

Wallace Haining, who runs just 20 Suffolk ewes in his own right at High Drum, Dunscore, Dumfries, enjoyed his best ever year too, securing not only his first Suffolk championship but also the inter-breed sheep honours. Supreme sheep was an AI-bred ewe lamb of the 10,000gns Conveth Gold Barm while the reserve went to the Bluefaced Leicester winner, a home-bred gimmer by a Cassington sire from Drew and Betty Brown, Drumhumphry, Corsock.
