Bobby Henderson kept his Tag (RB Henderson’s Jaff, Marjorie Thomson’s Mist) under close control at Hamilton Hall and Tag worked well to control the sheep, particularly on the cross drive. The cross ewes behaved well on the compact, gently sloping course, but did not like the young dogs approaching too close, nor were they keen on the pen.
Ian Fleming’s Roy (D Johnstone’s Nick and Misty) took full advantage of a good packet on the first run of the day, kept them calm and handled them quietly, but deviations from the line of the drive marred the work. Roy set a standard that remained unbeaten until Tag came forth. Tag started out very well and even two breaks at the pen failed to destroy his bid success.
The mule hoggs at Inchkeith were not keen to leave the top of the field, creating a problem for some dogs, although some failed the initial test of running out over the big outrun to reach the sheep. As they reached the handler’s feet, the hoggs were inclined to bolt there and again on the first leg of the drive, so that a number missed the gate, but they behaved well on the cross drive and at hand. Eddie Foster’s Jill (E Foster’s Rock and Jen) responded to the whistle after she stopped on her outrun and lifted well. The sheep bolted at Eddie’s feet and the line of the drive was twisted in places, but Jill got both drive gates. The packet was not easy to pen, but they were happier to be separated and Jill finished the winning run with a clean shed.
The cross hoggs at Potterston behaved well if dogs managed to keep their distance, but the rolling terrain of the field hindered the outrunning; most dogs coming in too tight at the top of the course and, although there was no fetch gate, the sheep tended to drift off the fetch. Colin Armstrong’s Nell (Awel) (RJP Jones’ Rap, GE Hughes’ Meg) ran out well although she was a little short at the top. She lost minor points over the piece but worked in a very stylish manner. Norman MacDonald’s Rob (R Dalziel’s Jamie, A Dickman’s Rule Skye) kept good control over the sheep, although one awkward hogg started the packet moving at the top of the field and tried to break on the fetch and on the cross drive. Rob worked well on the course but hesitated before he made his shed.
