Abington Show experienced a rather chilly day for August, but that failed to deter a big turnout of exhibitors in the strong sheep section, where the Wight family from Midlock, led the way in three different breeds.

It was the Texel topper from Karen and Allan Wight that secured the supreme sheep title – picked out by judge Roy Weir, Dressertland, Thornhill, Dumfries – and then went onto win the champion of champions accolade. Sired by Douganhill Monarch, this gimmer is out of a Castlecairn Kung Foo Fighter daughter which is also the dam to the ram lambs which are the pen number one and two at this week’s sale at Lanark.

For reserve overall, Mr Weir opted for the best from the Blackface shepherds section, a gimmer from Willie Craig, Gosland, Broughton. On its first show outing, she is by a £6500 Milnmark sire, out of a ewe which goes back to the 007 line of breeding.
