MACHINERY giant Case IH has mapped out the future of farm machinery maintenance by launching its version of a 'robo mechanic' at the recent Agritechnica event, in Germany.

Its vision sees the future of remote maintenance using hi-tech cloud based systems and it has teamed up with software specialist, Microsoft, to deliver this vision.

Literally, it is a vision – but through different eyes.

Its 'Industry 4.0' perspective brings its best maintenance experts instantly to any customer or dealer workshop across Europe, Middle East and Africa.

The goal is to reduce downtime and improving efficiency by using Microsoft HoloLens holographic goggles to allow maintenance engineers to use holograms in the field while working on machines. They can access Case IH experts hands-free as they work on the machine, and show them through his ‘glasses’ what he should be doing and what part he is working on. They can also talk direct in real-time via Skype.

The main goals are to save time, minimize the machine’s downtime and make the service more efficient, by improving productivity and business continuity, said Case IH.

Its secondary function is to make training easier. Instructors can be remotely connected to multiple people and give a live class without having to travel – a clear advantage in terms of time saving and efficiency.

A field testing phase for the system is expected to last one year, but is already delivering, according to a spokesman.

The HoloLens headset contains a full computer capability fitted with adapted Windows 10. Infrared cameras support the device in low-light conditions, while spatial sound speakers deliver an allround sound experience, with voice command available.
