IS IT a quad or an UTV?

The Polaris Sportsman ACE is certainly an intriguing hybrid that combines a single-seat quad-based chassis with UTV-style engine installation, conventional steering and a roll-over safety frame.

As such, it could easily be dismissed as a mini sports quad. But, in fact, it has features that could appeal to farming users.

"It's certainly a fun machine, as well as easier for novices and youngsters to drive, and safer too," confirms Mr Murray, of Polaris Britain. "But it's also practical, with a small rear load deck and a storage compartment up front, plus a generous towing capacity of 680kg."

It has a decent turn of speed thanks to the 325cc engine nestling just ahead of the rear wheels. Its 32hp output is the same as from the Sportsman 500 quad and is channelled through the usual Polaris automatic transmission with on-demand auto four-wheel drive system.

With 26cm ground clearance and 24cm of rear wheel travel provided by independent suspension, which has adjustable twin tube dampers, it will go where any quad will go.

"There are farmers who find the practicality of a side-by-side ATV appealing but feel current machines are too big and too pricey for them," said Mr Murray. "Maybe the ACE is the answer - it has the driving ease and safety of a UTV for about the same size as a quad.

"We also think it will appeal to anyone who finds it easier to slide into a seat than lifting a leg over it, as with a quad," he added.
