SUZUKI HAS revived the Vitara name for its new five-door compact SUV - which goes on sale in the UK from April.

It will have a choice of either a 1.6-litre petrol, or 1.6-litre DDiS diesel, both producing 118 bhp.

You can expect some pretty frugal motoring too, as the diesel version - which should make up the bulk of sales - has a new exhaust gas recircualtion (EGR) system to reduce CO2 emissions while at the same time boosting performance. And, for those who need four-wheel-drive, the CO2 emission penalties are kept to a minimum using EGR and the latest variable geometry turbocharger (VGR).

For those who don't need all-wheel propulsion, then the two-wheel-drive version is a pretty furgal little beast, with combined cycle figures of more than 70mpg with the diesel power unit.

Three levels of spec' SZ4, SZ-T and SZ5 grades - will give plenty of choice, with prices ranging from a competitive £13,999 for 1.6 petrol SZ4 with two-wheel-drive up to £21,299 for the 1.6 DDiS SZ5 Allgrip.

But even the bottom end of the food chain will come with seven airbags, 16-inch alloy wheels, DAB radio (with USB and Bluetooth connectivity), cruise control, auto air conditioning, front and rear electric windows and projector headlamps.
